God of War's Next PS5 Game Could Be Revealed Before the End of the Year 1

With the excellent Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 already on store shelves, Sony’s slate is once again looking a little light, as it continues to keep its exclusive cards close to its chest. One persistent rumour we’ve been hearing for a while, however, is that an expansion to God of War Ragnarok is in development at Santa Monica Studio – and it could launch as a standalone title, similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Whatever the case, Spanish outlet Areajugones claims it’s heard from “sources close to Sony” that the title will be officially revealed later this year, with The Game Awards in December being the likeliest venue. PlayStation has revealed major projects during the Geoff Keighley hosted event in the past, and it’s become an increasingly important part of the gaming calendar over the past few years, so that seems logical to us.

We’re assuming this add-on – or spin-off – will focus on Atreus as a playable character, as Kratos’ story largely concluded during Ragnarok’s main campaign. We’d expect this to be a smaller scale adventure, reusing many of the same mechanics and features from the core game, but extending the plot and sprinkling in some new ideas along the way. It’d certainly be consistent with how Sony has handled its other major franchises of late.
