It's an admittedly tiny picture, but it's likely that this is our first proper look at the main character of Assassin's Creed Red. Taken from the LinkedIn profile of a Ubisoft writer — who's currently working on Red — the art shows a seemingly female character wearing a very Assassin-style cowl, and wielding a Japanese-style blade (upside down, it should be noted, as is also the case in last year's teaser trailer).
The discovery of this picture has sparked all kinds of speculation with regards to an imminent Assassin's Creed Red reveal. All we've seen of the project so far is its initial teaser trailer from over one year ago — and Ubisoft has obviously been focusing on the recently released Assassin's Creed Mirage ever since. Could Red show up at The Game Awards in December? It wouldn't come as a huge surprise.
Previous reports have claimed that Red will feature two protagonists: a female shinobi who focuses on stealth, and a male samurai who focuses on combat. The details on these supposed leads have been a little murky, but this newly unearthed art certainly lines up with the rumours.

I remember a few years ago when Ubisoft asked fans which historic periods they would like to see Assassin's Creed games being set in, and someone from Ubisoft then complained that getting an AC game set in Japan or WWII as fans had asked is not viable.
And here we go: we could be getting a Japanese-period AC game soon. Makes me wonder if a WWII game is at least being considered now inside Ubisoft, seeing as it is apparently viable to set an AC game in Japan.
I could never click with this franchise everyone I tried was just tedious besides Ghost of Tsushima already did this for me.

Could be cool, similar to Syndicate then with two protagonists. I think I’d prefer games set in more distinct cities during periods of time though, the fall of Rome would be great. A WW2 game would actually be a good idea, as long as they don’t overload you with weapons. If you had to go behind enemy lines with only your hidden blade and a pistol then it would be far more impactful than being Far Cry WW2.
She looks really cool as is usual for AC protagonist. What can I say I'm a sucker for hoods. Would love to see it at the Game Awards.
I’m hoping that we hear more about this at the Game Awards. Surely, this could be the biggest TGA we’ve yet seen, in both terms of the potential diversity with the awards as well as announcements.
@extragood The reason they never did it was because they feared feudal Japan because the setting had been used in so many games already. I kinda feel like that's true, though, especially after Ghost of Tsushima it's very hard to make a distinguishing (and great) Assassin's Creed set in Japan.
Will we ever see a WW2? I think that will depend on this next game. If they manage to find an interesting angle to AC in Japan and the game sells well, I believe they will try. If the game is received poorly, with many outlets claiming the theme is overused, then they won't.
Syndicate is by the the best AC game ever made, so I'm at least a bit interested now.

Did not care about Assassin's Creed Mirage.
"Back-to-basics approach" that basically translated to dated game mechanics and story telling - not something I have any nostalgia for.
Hopefully this gets back to what made me care again for AC with the last few modern games. That Art is a good start.
I really hope this game goes back to the Open world setting and RPG style like Valhalla. I love the open world setting and upgrading your character with tons of upgrades and new moves and specials. Getting new gear and finding hundreds of collectibles and solving fun puzzles.

I hope they improve from the dual protagonists from syndicate. Also something else to throw put there,I hope the female lead is hot.

@Falcon94 I like AC but the narrative (especially in the newer games) is so weak. They could give us a grittier, more realistic portrayal of humanity but they give us the completely sanitised version every time.
Yes for dual protagonists. Male and female. NO for even more strong female only protagonist in games. Since gamergate it's become the norm and I'm tired of it. Like in more and more movies and series, where male characters are portrayed almost always negatively. They are "toxic", whips, simps, lazy, dumb or just deadbeats. And women characters are now the ones who have all of the traditionally male strengths.
Again, yes for dual protagonists, but just make it about the story and gameplay. Nothing else.

Wait…for real? They did that?!
While technically playable, Mirage was so bad in atmosphere, character and dialogue I feel certain it was all done by AI, it's so void of any passion or personality.
More an unpolished tech demo, Mirage is so generic and plain I'm ready to finally quit the series I've followed from the beginning.
The Japan one will need to be one heck of a masterpiece to wash away this Mirage stain for me.
And before someone wants to think it's about it being stealth, no. I like stealth.
It's just that no ideas are done well and it's so bland. Would be terrible even if it had remained cheaper dlc.
So Red will have to earn it pretty hard for me to come back. I'm done wasting my time on Ubi mistakes.
I know it’s not a popular opinion but Syndicate is one of my favorite AC entries. In fact… I really should give it another replay….
@koverby not really. FC always takes place in fictional settings, that very obviously are analogies of existing ones. Claiming FC5 removed Christianity and conservative political themes is as wrong as claiming Far Cry 6 removed all mentions of Cuba.
I still wish they'd make an Assassins Creed: Robin Hood game.
Very much interested in seeing a AC game set in historical Japan. Long overdue IMO.
A shame that AC makes it's current gen only debut in the most generic setting possible.

@Tharsman I plat'd Syndicate. Incredibly fun game. I even got the PS exclusive DLC.
Great game, great gameplay, great characters. Had one of the best villains (not main, but still) since AC 3.
Great dynamic between the twins too.
