Marvel's Spider-Man 2 stole the show at the last week's PlayStation Showcase and — perhaps unsurprisingly — drew in massive numbers. The ability to switch between Miles Morales and Peter Parker, ala GTA 5, was given ample time in the spotlight, and we've learned some more details on how all this dual protagonist business will work.
Senior community manager Aaron Jason Espinoza at Insomniac took to the PlayStation Blog to describe how progression and upgrading either character will work, stating:
"Between Peter's new Symbiote abilities and Miles' newfound blue bioelectric powers, each Spider-Man has their own unique set of skills that can be upgraded via an all-new individual skills tree. Our heroes share technology and train together, too, so we also included a shared Skill Tree that offers parallel upgrades for both."
This sounds like the right balance between making each character unique without feeling like you are beginning again from square one. Additionally, Espinoza says: "You'll seamlessly switch between both Spider-Men across a variety of story moments." It doesn't make it seem like a one-to-one with GTA 5's implementation. "We want players to bask in iconic team-ups elevated by our signature set-piece moments and experience the story from the perspective of each Spider-Man."
What do you think of this combination of shared and unique skills for our two Spideys? Are you counting down the days until we get a release date? Let us know in the comments section below.

Sounds interesting. Having some shared upgrades might also put some stress away from the fear of upgrading a character only to find that character is entirely locked out for the next mission or two.
That's.. really meh if that's the case. I thought the way it would work is that we'd be able to switch between either spidermen on the fly during missions or in certain missions
@Nepp67 probably for post-game but the actual story can't work that way it would break the flow
Spider-Man 1 was a decent game overall. I liked action gameplay and swinging and even Mary Jane and Miles (some people hated side characters).
But the story was so freaking dumb, it’s almost painful. It was written as some childish story, with Peter Parker being unable to pay rent while creating spider drones as a hobby. Then at some point he got evicted and you have to swing to the garbage disposal facility in order to pick up all his stuff.
Then they had Miles Morales, the game that I haven’t played, but I saw some videos on YouTube and it looked even dumber (especially the explosion in the final scene). Insomniac also added some political propaganda in that game… Looked bad. But who cares? It was a spin-off game, anyway.
Then there is Spider-Man 2. We waited for it, what, 2 years now? I don’t know about you, but I thought the trailer looked stupid. And I am not talking about the water here, but rather asking you to remember that Kraven the Hunter reveal. “Boss, wanna try new hunting grounds?” What the heck Who comes up with this crap?
Am I asking too much here from the world of videogames?
spiderman is just not on the same level as sonys other exclusive games
@practicein2021 I don't think you've played either game if I'm honest and by the sounds of it, this franchise isn't for you. Have you never read an actual comic book man? C'mon...
Hope it's a big improvement on the other games. .. they were the first games I wanted to play after getting a ps5 and all the hype ....was left pretty underhelmed ....don't hold a candle to the Arkham games in my opinion
@StylesT I dont think any of them are as good as the original 2009 Akham asylum
Hopefully we get more gameplay during summer game fest. Can't wait to see more of New York in all its PS5 glory 😍
I don't mind story-driven character switches so long as I can to it freely in the post-game.
@daveofduncan that’s the type of mentality that carries these titles. “Yeah, it’s dumb, but it’s good enough for me”, “You just have to turn your mind off and relax, man”.
Well, what if I don’t want for the developers to treat me like some moron? Naughty Dog creates complex storylines, even in T-rated games - doesn’t always work but at least they are trying. So, in that sense, maybe Insomniac’s Spider-Man franchise isn’t for me.
But you’re wrong about something else - I’m actually working with comics and I know that they can be used to tell truly incredible, complex stories with very interesting characters. Because they come out every month, though, a lot of the stuff out there is quite bad (everybody has to work under tight deadlines), but it’s still not on the level of stupidity of these games. At least most of them, I think. No idea what you’ve read
@StylesT Arkham City is still the best superhero videogame ever made IMO
@Tharsman Agreed, the shared upgrade path is brilliant in this regard!
@Drago201 Very true, it'd break the story immersion. Still would have been awesome to swap during story missions though.
