How do you change PS5 cover plates? The PlayStation 5 is certainly a head turner with its rather out-there design. However, more often than not it's the contrasting black and white colour scheme that rubs players the wrong way the most. Whether it's messing with your feng shui or you just didn’t like a giant white tower placed beside your television, for the longest time there hasn’t anything you could officially do about it.
Now, of course, that has changed with the five officially released PlayStation 5 cover plates, which come in Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple. These can be mixed and matched with the DualSense controllers which also come in each of those colours.
However, if you are struggling to figure out how you go about swapping the PS5 cover plates, or maybe you're nervous about bending and twisting a pricey console, then we have an incredibly helpful guide that will walk you through the steps. Head on over to the Push Square YouTube channel, to watch our step-by-step guide:
The process is relatively easy once you know what to do, so once you’ve watched our video you’ll be all set to chop and change your PS5’s colour palette to your heart’s content.

I'm good with white. It goes with my set up.
I thought this was an april fools joke and had to check the date..i thought maybe spending all that time in elden ring may have warped my sense of time in the real world..
Cant wait for PS5 Slim or Pro, really hate this design, but i bought the Black plates from Sony’s Direct site and it looks a little better, but it’s still far to large and the stand is straight stupid. I don’t stand it up, so to have to have a stand to lay it flat is just lame design. Sorry not sorry, cause i know someone will try and tell me why i am wrong about my take on it. I got the black controller and it looks really nice. Makes the console and controller in my setup match and blend way better. Was happy sony came out with black options fairly quick. As for $55 for plastic covers, i mean it’s subjective, i have the money but dare i say it seems slightly overpriced even tho i do like what they look like compared to the white. Day one pre ordering the slim or Pro and ditching this design.
I understand why the design is divisive. Personally though I really love the look. That’s probably helped by the fact that I moved house shortly after getting one and literally chose largely white furniture and a large TV stand specifically to compliment the console though, lol. If I had a smaller, maybe brown, TV cabinet which it didn’t properly fit into, it might just look wrong.
No faceplates for me.
Plus, I’d want it to match the white PSVR2 anyway.
@Rural-Bandit I thought it would look better in the flesh when it was originally revealed. It doesn't. Thankfully it doesn't matter in the slightest as I have it completely obscured by my television. I certainly respect Sony's boldness in launching such a unique design but I don't like it at all.
Changed mine for Dbrand a long time ago. Matt black is so much better than that ugly white. Also bought new black controllers
@lacerz has the Playstation been naughty?
Don't see the point of this article. Changing the cover is easy and only took my butler about half an hour. Are your butlers incompetent?
I am ok with white as well. Goes well with my razer kaira pro. I do have the purple and red dualsense though.
I’ll consider getting the black one to match my Xbox Series X next to it. But the official plates have yet to reach my country.
@Rural-Bandit When I finally get round to getting one, I've already worked out where to hide it behind the telly - just so I don't have to look at the monstrosity!
Never felt like that with any other PS, usually being displayed loud and proud alongside the TV unit (where my PS3 Slim and PS4 Pro live now).
Slim (or short, preferably) can't come soon enough!
How to change PS5 cover plates:
Step 1) Get your eyes taken out by a scalper and buy a PS5
I got the cosmic red cover plates to match the Dualsense controller of the same colour that I have.
I really have no issues with the design of the PS5 or the colour white.
I honestly think its look cool and have since it was revealed.
Much prefer to by coloured controllers than faff with the console.
After looking at my PS5 side panel from a certain angle I noticed a dark spot in the middle. Does everyone have this? It's a little odd.
That reminds me, I need to get a set of the black ones. I've been told many times now that I'll never go back. Come to think of it, people have been telling me that since way before these came out... they must have had some kind of insider knowledge.
@TeapotBuddha did your auntie mention it to you? Its possible she may have had some inside her knowledge😉😆
@riceNpea wow 🤣
I like the stock white as well. No reason to buy another pair of plates.
@PenguinL yep this can happen. Seems to be due to the production process or any kind of abrasion.
I can see this on mine as well, only on the side with the disc drive.
While I might change the face plate color to purple in the future, considering I also want to get the purple Dualsense when I can, I feel it’s also important that anyone with a PS5 knows how to remove the face plates in general as, from my experience, it’s the only way to ensure you get all of the dust out from your console and from around the fan. If it gets bad enough it will cause your PS5 to shut off mid game(if you’re playing a PS5 game) due to overheating from all of the dust.
Just my opinion, but I don't understand the obsession with cosmetically modding tech. It's like when people got Switchs and wanted to makes them look like Gamecubes or a Snes with skins and custom joycons. Subreddits are spammed constantly by these custom 'muh nostalgia' jobs.
I am sure in twenty years the PS5's striking design — both in shape, size and colour — will be regarded iconic in its own right. It's its own thing, it doesn't need to look like a PS2 or pay homage to the PS1 colour scheme.
That said, I can understand the desire to simply switch the colour to black if it fits your setup better.
@riceNpea 🤣
Yeah mine's staying white... don't want to mess with the colour indicators I've it pushed well back into the shadows beind the glass in a low TV cabinet and raised on a small black box about 4x3inches so you only feintly see the bottom lip. Blacked the upper side light out too; glaring
I got a cheap no name black one on Amazon that turned out to be very nice quality and fit
Everything else is black, so I just needed it to blend a bit.
Was hiding it behind the TV, and was afraid it would develop a dust issue back there.
@Fragile yeah thats well worded, I think i agree with that too, I appreciate them trying to take a different direction with their hardware, but I don’t like it in my entertainment center. It does disappear more with the black plates.
i want the black one so bad to match my black controller but they’re too expensive !!!!
@sanderson72 thank you and yes I agree that the Slim cant come soon enough however keep in mind we might be waiting awhile due the fact Sony overclocks their chips to get to 10.2 Tflops.
So thats why it has such a large heat sink in it. That will take a while to shrink and maintain inside a smaller chassis. But when it happens i think Sony will have a lot of us trading in and getting the slimmer profile to sit out and show off in our setups. Thanks for being so cool with my feedback, i thought i would be getting ripped for saying i think it’s ugly. My Series X isn’t anything to brag about looks wise but it fits and just disappears in my setup and i like that.
@jrt87 because people like customizing & decorating their things , it’s really simple & no different than people who like to customize their cars or even themselves with tattoos , piercing , etc
simple
I like the look of the PS5 but agree that certain aspects (like the base when used horizontally) needs improvement.
However the “fussy” (ahem) nature of some gamers is really hilarious. Just go play your games boys and girls!
I'd rather buy more games than waste money on cosmetics.
You see it best when you see nothing at all. Only need what appears onscreen; that's the beauty of the digital era no plastic no clutter. Some people keep skeletons in their closet i'd recommend a playstation instead
Although I had the white for the first year or so, as soon as Sony released the black covers I was all over it like a rash. Perfectly matches the TV, black controllers & headset now 🤤
I had to remove - and reapply - my PS5 faceplate recently.
I installed an SSD into the expansion slot.
It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I was a bit nervous at first, but it came loose eventually. I thought the plate might break at first.
If anything, putting it back on was harder. Making sure that it stayed on.
If I was ever to change the faceplate, I would get a black one - because I just think it would look cool. But I have got used to the white panels now.
And every single other piece of AV hardware I have is also black - so it’s actually nice that the PS5 stands out from the crowd.
Plus, they show up the dust - so I do have to actually clean it occasionally.
@PenguinL YES. this is exactly why I got the black plates. Added m.2 drive while I was at it. worth it.
@riceNpea
Just the camera angle. Plenty of space to use the drive.
@Rural-Bandit I think the very fact that they do replacement face plates for a console indicates that someone somewhere knew the design was going to divide opinion.
Did we have replacement panels for the PS1, 2, 3 or 4? No, because the design was classy in all situations (even if some people compared the fat PS3 to a George Foreman grill!)
The PS5 is just ugly - kind of like a Babylon 5 Vorlon that's about to flash its mac. If they don't redesign it before I get one, I might invest in some black side plates, just to camouflage it even more! Never wanted to hide cutting edge tech until now.
I was putting on the black plates and my wife was helping me. She asked, "Whats the point of changing the color?" after I told her I spent 55 bucks on them.
I had to explain to her it's similar to how little girls change the clothes on their barbie dolls - it's a socially acceptable excuse for grown men/women to play dress up with their stuff. I told her, deep down, we are all little girls playing with barbie dolls.
THEN she understood and asked no more questions 😆
@sanderson72 You nailed it buddy, thats how i feel too. Nothing about it looks appealing to me and the white doesn’t help. With the Black plates i have on it, i give it a little less stink eye when i stare at it. But even my wife said it was ugly in our entrainment center, mainly cause everything else was black and smaller and to a degree just blends when you look at them. Then there’s this bright white huge console that needs a stand to lay down or it wobbles. I mean building a console that needs a stand to lay flat is just silly, no one could change my mind about that.i am thankful its not loud like my PS4 Pro was. I was happy to get rid of that from a noise standpoint, but i miss it in the size and looks compared to the quieter PS5.
I ended up getting the dark plates.
The PS5 looks like [email protected]#. Might be the ugliest console ever released. The black plates look nicer but it's still a hideous design.
XBSX for the win there. After that awful 360 design.
@sword_9mm if you ask me it looks good when you can just see a feint white rim - in a TV cabinet and maybe that was the idea; who knows but it looks good enough to ski down
@lacerz Nice rig!
