Cyberpunk 2077 Anniversary

This time last year, the Push Square office was in chaos. Cyberpunk 2077 was finally here — arguably the most important release of 2021 from a coverage point of view — and we had only just received review code. A desperate dash to provide written content ensued, and that's when the horror started to set in. The game was a complete mess on PlayStation.

We had even delayed our Game of the Year coverage for the sake of Cyberpunk, but we obviously had no way of knowing that it would be a disaster. We spent days on end blasting through the open world RPG, contending with consistent crashing issues and an unthinkable amount of bugs — one of them a game-breaking menace that still prevents this particular author from seeing the credits roll.

We ended up with the most bitterly disappointed 3/10 review you can possibly imagine, just before the Christmas holidays.

Anyway, happy birthday Cyberpunk 2077! It's crazy to think that it's been a whole year since the game first landed — and it's even crazier to think that CD Projekt Red is still trying to fix it. To be fair, a slew of updates have made the game a lot better from a technical perspective, but it still feels like we're waiting on a finished product.

There's hope that the PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077 — which was delayed to early 2022 — will deliver something closer to what CDPR had promised for all those years, but at this point, it's hard not to be at least a little bit cynical. That's especially true when considering the existing PS4 version of the game — will 2077 ever run well on last-gen consoles? We honestly don't know.
