As promised, the PlayStation 5's major firmware update is now available to download.
PS5 system software version 21.02-04.00.00 has been released, and is ready for you to download and install. Weighing in at about 914MB, this is the largest update to the console's firmware to date, adding in a bunch of quality-of-life changes, improvements, and brand new features.
There are a few things worth noting about this update. The biggest addition is you can now supplement the PS5's internal SSD storage with an off-the-shelf M.2 SSD, as long as it's compatible of course. This means you can finally expand your storage for PS5 games without having to export them to an HDD. You can find the Best PS5 SSD and How to Install a PS5 SSD through the link.
The next major addition is an expansion on PS5's 3D audio tech. This update enables 3D audio for TV speakers, meaning you shouldn't need to plug in headphones to enjoy spatial sound.
There's a lot more included here, and we'll be sure to keep you up to speed with everything as we play around with the new update. There's a more detailed breakdown through the link, in the meantime.

Nice. I've been waiting for Push Square to let me know when this was live. 🙏
Might need to get a WD SSD for Christmas. 🤔
Just booted up my PS5 from rest mode to install the update and will be checking out the new features soon. Oh and there's also an update for the Dualsense, I wonder what that does above adding the ability to use the Dualsense's mic to setup 3D audio for TV speakers.
Where can I change the Streaming quality for PS4 PS Now Games?
Hopefully the media remote gets a fw upgrade soon to allow proper use of the microphone
That improved Trophy list though!
It's so nice being able to reply to messages and view party chats in a window and not full screen!
Did anyone find the Trophy Tracker yet?
The prices of compatible SSD's made me instantly sweat loads.
Looking forward to finally buy an nvme ssd.
Next please:
-VRR
-Controller updates wirelessly
-Extended support for surround systems (3D Audio, Height channel speaker)
-Folders
-Changelogs for Ps5 Games
@IonMagi - it appears you can only track trophies from their tiles in the game's Activities panel, not from the actual trophy list. I don't think they've thought that one through.
Elsewhere, they've tidied up the Game Library with no more red PlayStation Hits banners, a few other game art changes and the likes of Return to Arkham now has two entries, one for each game. Unless that was just my database rebuild?
@SirOmak the usual tiny improvements. I don’t think we will notice something huge.
Annoyingly you still can't check for updates or sync save data from the game library, only from the home screen (and therefore limited to the nine most recently played games).
Finally I can put my WD in its home. Looking forward to the extra space for sure. Even if it’s only 1tb
The 3D audio when playing COD is so different through my Soundbar. I can hear the gunfire come from different directions now.
Who needs the 3D headset
The most awesome feature for me is finaly disabling the visual confirmation when taking screenshots. I can finaly take burst screenshots like a mad tourist in games without the popup notification ruining it.
@KeitaroBaka even better would be when the system would be so clever to simply not include the popup in screenshots.
@Reeneman Don't ask them the moon. We'll have that when the console is end of life And there is still an audio cue.
Cool, doing it now Now...PLEASE SONY CAN YOU LET ME SAVE MY PS5 GAME SAVES TO USB(WHY CAN'T I DO THAT FOR THIS GEN FOR!?!?) :-/ IN THE NEXT UPDATE PLEASE!!! I had to shout that out Because I really don't want to lose my PS5 game saves if my PS5 dies :-/
@GoodGame me, because my wife and son want to sleep sometimes haha
I always check here to see if an update will brick my console. It's one of my worst fears.
I mean can you even get a different one from support now? I imagine you'd have to wait forever.
@Topov81 @IonMagi you can track trophies from the trophy list, so long as it isnt a hidden trophy. So where the trophy criteria is available to see, just click on it and the option to track is there
Installed and the trophy section is a lot better, a nice QoL update IMO.
Does anyone know why you get a warning when updating the PS5 saying do not eject the disc during the update? I could be wrong but I don't recall the PS4 (or Pro) stating this! Just curious, not that I need to eject the disc of course.
What perfect timing. I ordered a 1TB WD_Black SN850 m.2 drive over a month ago that was on backorder from Western Digital directly (and sold out at every retailer). It arrived yesterday!
@lolwhatno You should get one.
I want 1) silent boot with a beep and 2) PS Remote Play with direct controller connection to the PS5 (not via my phone) without tricks.
@Stocksy You should have got the 4TB one like me.
Immediately after the update I've encountered coil whine. Not the quiet kind either. Pissed.
EDIT: Turned it off. Let it cool down. Unplugged. Took the chassis off and removed the little dust that was there. 9hrs of Ghost of Tsushima later and it's as quiet as always. Phew!
@IonMagi thats something i really would like to have. 👍
Anyone else experiencing issues with the 3D Audio through the TV speakers? Everything sounds muffled as if you were covering your ears but you can still partially hear.
Really like the update it makes things clear. PS5 symbol being next to the game name. PS5+PS4 symbols on the game's you own, either one or the other or both PS5/PS4 if you own both versions. Trophies being vertical is 100 times better, so glad they changed that. Now I need to update my PS4 PRO not being to see my PS5 Trophies bugged me.
I'm fine with the external HDD storage option for now but happy to see the SSD slot is ready now. Now once folders come back then I'll get really excited!
@Korgon the M.2 SSD feature is great but an external hard drive is also very convenient. Sure you can't run PS5 titles from it but at least we can move them across when we're not currently playing them.
@Korgon Same here. While it's great that the ability to use the expansion slot is finally there, I'm fine with using my 2TB Samsung T7 for the time being since they let us store PS5 games on them. Someday of course, but I'm still more excited about the trophy updates.
Not that it's a big deal or even a negative, but the changes to same of the game icons was a bit surprising. It seems to have mainly changed to being just game logos now since ones like Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Tales of Arise Demo (and I'm assuming the full game), Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla are now just the logos on the tiles. Again, not a big deal. Just a change I noticed right away after my system restarted after the update.
Cant check for updates still and they removed it where the tiles were game covers like the full thing, now they changed them to look like there ps4 ones, an example would be genshin impact
@SpartaRulz Yeah, I tried it there and it sounds absolutely dreadful. Very disappointed. I can always use my headphones but I was looking forward to seeing how their virtual surround works as their headphones have a similar feature which works really well.
Very glad they fixed the trophy list. Horizontal should have never been a thing.
@nessisonett yep, I was also looking forward to testing this feature only to be disappointed in it. The PS5 UI sounds normal but as soon as you start a game, the audio sounds muffled as if you were wearing a pair of headphones but you could still hear sound outside.
@SpartaRulz That really stinks. Do you at least have the option to turn off 3D audio for TV speakers? At least until they can get it patched...
@eagletrippin yes you can turn it off in the Audio settings.
Il be getting an ssd when im paid but do I need a heatsink too? Not a tech guy see just play the games lol
Got a 1TB SN850 with h/sink arrives tomorrow.
Also preordered 2Tb Firecuda 530 with h/sink(thats delayed), Gonna put 1Tb in PS5 first then swap out when 2Tb Firecuda 530 arrives. 1Tb SN850 will go in my PC:)
@Danloaded Yes, you must use a heatsink, whether a built in one or 3rd party one. Also it all has to fit in SSD bay with SSD bay cover on.
@KilloWertz I noticed that too. But ya know, I think it just needs time to refresh. It’ll show the official icons after a few days. I know cause I once rebuilt the database and it did the same thing.
@marty8370 cheers man. I believe i got the right ssd and heatsinks in my list. The samsung 980 pro (from the push square list) and a compatible heatsink twin pack for £12. 22x7x3mm
@Danloaded - No probs. Ther will be plenty of vids showing how easy it is to fit the drive into PS5
