The latest PlayStation 5 firmware update, which has been available for beta testers for quite some time now, will be available for everyone to download from tomorrow. The system patch includes support for the M.2 SSD storage slot, meaning you'll now be able to download and play more PS5 games and run them off an internal SSD. Other highlights include updates and tweaks to the PS5 UI, new Accolade types, a Trophy tracker, and 3D Audio support for built-in speakers.
As per the PlayStation Blog, here are all the patch notes for the new PS5 firmware update:
PS5 UX Enhancements
- Control Center customization. Players can now customize their Control Center more freely by rearranging or choosing which controls to hide or unhide at the bottom of the screen.
- Enhanced Game Base. Players can now easily view and write messages to friends and Parties directly from Game Base in the Control Center.
- Game Library and Home Screen updates. If you have PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game installed, they’ll now appear separately in the “Installed” tab of the Game Library and on the Home screen. Each game’s tile now also clearly indicates its platform.
- Screen Reader controls. Players can now pause or resume Screen Reader (Press “PS + Triangle buttons”) and have it repeat anything it reads (Press “PS + R1 buttons”).
New Gaming and Social Experience Customizations
- PlayStation Now resolution selector and connection test tool. PlayStation Now subscribers can choose between 720p or 1080p (depending on individual game) to accommodate their preferred video resolution for game streaming. A streaming connection test also helps them identify and troubleshoot any problems with their connection.
- New Accolade Type: “Leader.” Following an online match, players can award others with a fourth accolade type, “Leader,” which is visible on players’ profiles.
- Automatic capture of “personal best” videos. When players compete in challenges for a better time or a higher score and set a new personal best, a video clip of the action will automatically be recorded. Players can also share clips of their personal bests directly from the challenge card in the Control Center, or from their Media Gallery. Players have direct control over this functionality via their Captures and Broadcast settings.
- New Trophy tracker. We’ve added a new Trophy Tracker that lets players quickly access up to five trophies per game through the Control Center.

As for pumping 3D Audio through your TV speakers, "this feature transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion. Players can measure the acoustics of their room using the microphone on their DualSense wireless controller to apply the 3D audio setting that’s optimized for their room."

Please be the update that brings back vertical trophy lists!
@bpomber The beta for this did it, as far as I know - so it should.
Some pretty good changes here. Looking forward to seeing what the 3D Audio changes do.
So hey, you think you could repost that PS5 SSD article?
Folders when
Finally! Can plug in my ssd.
Very cool. That's pretty much everything on my wishlist except tile pinning.
Nice one.
The 3D audio update sounds cool for stereo!
But guessing for someone like me who has a 7.1 surround system it makes no difference?
@bpomber came here to say the same. The horizontal trophy list was always a bad UI choice.
One of the few that actually liked the game versions combined (once they fixed it post release to be clearer) the change is just going to clutter my interface with additional icons. But I can live with that
@IonMagi I’ve actually embraced no folders having spent far too long organising mine on PS4. But also accept choice is good.
@Shepherd_Tallon yes I’d also prefer tile pinning to folders.
They don’t mention anything on the blog post about the vertical trophy list, but it was in the beta. Another thing I would like is the ability to manually check for game updates for titles on my “installed” list without having to start the game.
TV 3D audio is the part I am most interested in (besides SSD support, however waiting for prices to drop on those).
Got an LG CX so hopefully 3D audio works well with OLED sound mode
About to close my eyes and hit add to cart on a SSD.
Control centre customisation, new trophy tracker and vertical list trophy view are the plus points for me. Not really too bothered about the rest.
Not bad but I'm still waiting for Themes though assuming the feature gets added at all.
Reckon we’ll ever see an option to disable those godawful cards that are blighting the UI?
@RubyCarbuncle Probably not since the Game Picture takes up the whole Screen now
I'd like an update for my PS4 that lets you have more than 1 usb HDD active
@IonMagi I was thinking the same thing.
Yes yes yes!! Just in time for my 500Gb WD 850 SSD I just bought 👍🏻
@themightyant Was just talking about this at work - I loved the folders on PS4, but I like how the tiles look on PS5 so I'd be happy enough with just pinning.
But, as you say, choice is always good.
Don't think I'll be buying any of those overpriced 4thGen NVMe's. I'll just stick to my 8TB HDD. It's got all my PS4 games on it and several of my PS5 games. When I want to play them I just transfer them back, only takes a few minutes.
It's a minor inconvenience compared to the cost of the 1or2TB NVMe's. I prefer not to delete stuff if it can be helped, so they'd fill up fairly quickly. Imagine what 4-8TB versions will cost when they are a thing. 😬
@Perryg92 No, you can only enable the new settings if you select
headphones and two channel as far as I recall. One of the first things I had a play with.
Really looking forward to seeing what the 3D audio on TV speakers is like
@GADG3Tx87 I put a 1Tb in and yes, filled up pretty quick! But much quicker than the external 1TB SSD I was using. I can fit everything I play normally between the internal and NVMe.
I did have a number of errors moving some files from external drive to NVMe but I think they were probably damaged, I had a lot of issues with standby mode.
fook sake i bought the pulse 3d now they're doing it through the tv
Will 3d audio work only on games,or also when watching blu ray movie?
Hopefully the EQ function comes to non-pulse headsets. Series x has this via the dolby app and its v cool
FINALLY! I need this so much! Happy it's here!
Also, the next option should be to fix games on the home screen. When I'm playing multiple games I would like for them to stay put and not disappear into the library!
It's about f****** time ...
I hope VRR is coming soon..
@bremkat35 you’ve never needed the Pulse headset to make use of the 3D audio I’m afraid. Any headphones are capable of outputting the 3D sound. The 3D comes from the Tempest Engine rather than the headphones. It was all very complicated marketing from Sony, and probably deliberately so.
I’m on the beta and the 3D sound from the TV is good for those games that support it. Headphones will always be infinitely better from an immersion point of view. Still a very nice feature though.
No mention of PS Remote Play over wireless networks? That is by far my most anticipated feature.
Anyone know how good the speed is on a 1TB WD 850 SSD is? I am nervous it might be slower than the internal ssd and just leave the multiplayer games on the console storage
@zebric21 This. It's been one of my most wanted features from the beginning. The screen tearing of PS5 games in the various 4K video transfer modes is ridiculous.
@hulkie 3D sound is only for games that support it. For example, older PS4 games you are playing via backwards compatibility won’t use 3D sound. In fact when I play some older games I actually turn the 3D sound off.
To my knowledge there are no movies that support 3D, though I could be wrong on that point.
not sure if it's mentioned in another article but the PS App will have a pretty important update, too. View share screens, remote play over mobile data (something Microsoft had an advantage at up until now)
Do people really still use tv speakers though? I’ve had a surround soundbar set up for like ten years lol
@bpomber I know the beta has it and it looks much better.
@AFCC It's not (it's more than fast enough). In fact, the PS5 system architect Mark Cerny himself promotes this drive as the one he is personally using in his PS5. Check YouTube for speed comparisons. In particular a video maker named NASCompares
@AFCC It's as fast if not faster from what I've read. And as said above, endorsed by the man himself
I'm using a Samsung 980 Pro and it's fantastic. I don't think there's anything in it between the 980 the WD Black 850, so you should be good.
@eagletrippin I don't know why it's taking so long..HDMI 2.1 VRR is an open standard..
@zebric21 Yep, it's really annoying and something that should have been enabled by now. WRC 10 is a mess because it's missing.
@eagletrippin it's crazy that we're still waiting on it. Having to sacrifice true full HDR just to have a bearable smooth screen is pretty embarrassing for them to be honest.
Nice, can't wait to try the 3D sound tech for tv, I still wish for folder though.
@Nexozi It's majorly annoying. I don't have WRC, but I do have F1 2021, and the screen tearing is horrible. What adds to the frustration is (for my Samsung TV), I have to run my PS5 4K video transfer mode on Automatic in order to get 4k120fps. But then need to switch it back to -1 whenever I want to play other games to eliminate the screen tearing in those games...
@BowTiesAreCool Agreed. VRR has been an even a higher priority than the SSD for me. Question though — You aren't able to have HDR when you switch your 4k video transfer rate to -1 or -2? I thought it should still retain HDR in those modes, I thought that was a fix back in the early Spring...
@eagletrippin the output is still in HDR but a more washed out, less impactful version of it. Like going from HDR10+ to a couple of levels down. You sacrifice the top level, deeper darks and higher brights when you drop to -1 or -2 (as well as the sound quality).
@BowTiesAreCool I believe that VRR wont fix any of these problems mate..it seems that your TV can't handle the hdmi 2.1 bandwidth...i may be wrong though..VRR all it does is to match the TV framerate with the console.
@BowTiesAreCool Gotcha. Yeah, not sure why they can't get everything working as it should in Auto transfer mode ...
I really wish I could hide non-game tiles (icons) from my library of games on my PS5, such as PlayStation Plus and Remote Play, etc. They make the display look so messy and annoy the crap out of me!
Wish they would bring folders back.
@Voltan True but there isn't any mention if it on PS Blog. I really hope it is in this update.
@zebric21 it's the 2019 LG B9 OLED... it should just about be able to keep up! VRR is the solution. Series X is fine with it on. Sony have promised the patch "soon" though.
@SJBUK @eagletrippin Thanks to both of you! <3
@Cookyman1970 Same here.
@BowTiesAreCool I have the next year model the BX and no problems with HDR or 120fps..but i have problems with frame dips without vrr.
@BowTiesAreCool Yeah, I believe the problem is the PS5, and either it's own hardware limitations, or it's lack of proper software. My TV (2019 Samsung Q900R) apparently doesn't suffer the same annoying graphical problems for Xbox Series X users that it does for PS5 users...
@zebric21 I believe BowTies is saying that he does get HDR & 120fps, it's just that the HDR is lower quality in the lower transfer rate modes ...
No sight of 1440p support. I do understand I might be part of a small minority so it'll probably take quite some time. I just hope it eventually comes. Same with VRR. Still… sigh
It's just occurred to me that it appears no white-listing of NVMe drives is going to happen. Seems if it benchmarks quick enough it's supported. Good news, as more Gen4 drives appear there'll be no wait for Sony to validate them first.
To those looking for an SSD at a decent price... https://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-wd-black-sn850-m2-2280-pcie-40-x4-nvme-ssd-3d-nand-7000mb-s-read-5300mb-s-write
I bought mine from here. Very good service and next day delivery.
@eagletrippin Looks like December for VRR, same time as Bravia TV updates. Looking forward to it.
@SJBUK I hope you're right! I'll be thrilled to see it come out this calendar year. 1 year out from the PS5 release isn't super, but I feel is still acceptable.
@hypnotoad Looks like a good price. Not sure about the free heatsink though, looks a bit basic. Are you going with that or have you chosen something else?
@render I've bought it mate.
I'll report back after the firmware update.
That 3D audio tweak sounds fun.
I mean, updates to the consoles must be the thing Sony does worst. I mean, where’s tile pinning and folders? Like, such simple features which a year on from release should be there. Really irritates me that the UI isn’t treated in the same vein as games when we spend so much on the console.
So what exactly will the 3d audio for TV do? I play on a monitor with 2 desktop speakers and a sub, will that even affect me?
@kingbreww I do unfortunately
@The_Pixel_King yeah. I wish demos didn't stay in your Library too...or game trials that make me think I own the game years later. That was a bugbear with the PS4 and it still annoying now.
Been looking forward to the 3D audio for awhile now...so glad that it's finally here
@Sladey69 yeh I knew some people would still use tv speakers as their audio I was more meaning why not do soundbars as well at least
Pumped I can finally move the power button to the start
@Sladey69 How do you have your speakers connected? If they're connected from the monitor I would assume the TV setting would work fine.
@Bleachedsmiles Oh man, they annoy me, too! Especially those damn trials. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve completely forgot and thought I owned Wolfenstein II only to rediscover – after downloading – that it was only a trial. Kid me once, shame on you, kid me five times, that’s on me! Lol. Though you do know you can hide them, right?
heck yeah PlayStation... this is the one we been waiting for... love these improvements and updates... keep it up Sony.!!
@bpomber I just want to be able to delete games from your trophies list, or at least hide them. Downloading a game, getting a few trophies and deciding you don’t like it forces you to see that game every time you look at your trophies.
Folders and themes when please? That is all I care about at this point...besides being able to remove 1%+ games from trophy lists.
Anyone know what time, to save the constant checking?
Owned PS5 since November 2020, still waiting for my first accolade to appear.
Some good changes here though and finally I can get round to doing the install of the second SSD drive, will probably wait till end of October though just in case anything happens in last month of the guarantee.
Looks very nice so far.
Installed it just now, and presently exploring the new features.
The 3D audio doesn’t worry me too much, as my sound outputs from my 5.1.2 amplifier. Dolby Atmos or DTS:X support would be nice, but maybe next time.
The first thing I shall do is re-install the Last Of Us Part II - and see if actually works now. it has NEVER worked on my PS5 - “Something went wrong” is really vague.
No luck.
Still says “Can’t Install”.
@SJBUK it has an audio jack and inbuilt speakers but they are terrible. AOC Gaming 24G2U5 - 24 Inch FHD Monitor,
@Sladey69 Nice monitor. I think as far as the PS5 is concerned it's just a TV, so I'd expect it to work. I guess quality will be determined by whatever your monitor uses to extract the sound from the HDMI and convert it to a signal to the headphone jack. Fingers crossed!
@RogerRoger unless they fixed this in today’s update, you can only do this for the games on your homepage. This does not work for games on the “installed” tab.
