The protagonist of Persona 5 has been voted the RPG's best character in Japan as the game marks its fifth anniversary since release. Named Joker in the metaverse and Ren Amamiya in the animated TV series, the game lets you choose your own title. As such, Persona 5's main character is the overall winner following more than 48,000 votes in Japan.
A breakdown of the votes is as follows:
- Persona 5 protagonist — 9,824 votes
- Makoto Niijima — 7,606 votes
- Goro Akechi — 7,088 votes
- Futaba Sakura — 6,444 votes
- Yusuke Kitagawa — 5,078 votes
- Morgana — 4,002 votes
- Haru Okumura — 3,413 votes
- Ann Takamaki — 2,708 votes
- Ryuji Sakamoto — 1,976 votes
Considering both Ann and Ryuji are your closest friends during the school term, it's somewhat surprising to see them both propping up the list as the bottom two. It's worth noting the votes are based on the original Persona 5 rather than Persona 5 Royal, so Kasumi wasn't considered. The vote also proves Japan still has a bit of an obsession with Goro Akechi; the country loves its edgier characters.
The game's fifth anniversary was on Wednesday as it was originally released in Japan for PlayStation 4 and PS3 on 15th September 2016. Western audiences had to wait another seven months before getting their hands on it, but many of the characters listed above resonated with European and US players too. Ann = best girl in Persona 5
I mean, his design is fun, but the personality is non-existent, since the player makes decisions for him.
Akechi was under-utilized in the vanilla release, but Atlus did an amazing job fleshing out his social link and character arc in Royal.
Ann is best girl, obviously. Never fully understood the love for Makoto, even if she has an AWESOME metaverse outfit and Persona.

Vanilla: Ann Takamaki
Royal: Goro Akechi
Ann so far down, bless. I was more of a Makoto kinda guy though, not gonna lie.

Horrifying that Morgana even makes it onto the list.
I'd rate them in this order
1) Protagonist
2) Makoto (best girl!)
3) Ann
4) Haru
5) Goro
6) Morgana
7) Ryuji
8) Futaba
9) Yusuke
If we include Royal in this, I'd put Kasumi right next to Makoto and Maruki under Ann
I loved the Futaba/Yusuke pair. I did not allow my MC to romance her as I feel those two have a great relationship lol.

Protag, Makoto and Ann are pretty solidly ahead of everyone else imo. Yusuke and Ryuji are fine in short bursts, Haru is inoffensive at best, Futaba does my head in and Morgana is a war crime.

Looks like Joker isn't just looking cool. Turns out he is cool!...in Japan at least. There's no right or wrong answer here though for me I legitimately liked all of them pretty equally. If I had to pick though it is definitely Kasumi, Akechi, and Ann for my top three if Royal is included.
I don't get the Morgana hate, he was basically the MC's sensei imo . Anyway, I am playing royal now and I am liking him more than that big mouth Ryuji.
Plus, Makoto >Ann.
I have a tough time really listing who my most and least favorite characters are since I like them all quite a bit.
Ann, akechi, and yusuke are high up on my list for everything from their interactions with the other characters to their gameplay styles. They're great. And the MC is pretty solid too. Easily one of the best silent protags ever especially when you have MCs like Link and the mc from SMT Nocturne
Morgana, ryuji, makoto, and futaba are still pretty good but I found myself not using them much in palaces. I still really enjoy seeing them on the screen though. And haru just didn't even need to exist honestly. Why she even has a semblance of a fan base is beyond me
Ryuji is my personal favourite. A relatable kid who provides some of the best comedic moment.
Then Makoto.
Never got the Makoto love, just assumed it was an attempt to go against the grain.
Joker is just cool, but best character? Hmm i can kind of understand as the way the game is written makes you feel like you are joker.
Sae deserves to be in the list imo, and Ann and Ryuji should both be way higher
Morgana easily my No.1 followed by Joker and then Makoto.
I liked all of them really apart from Akechi, annoying in almost every single scene he was in.
Ryuji being at the bottom doesn't surprise me, the total nimrod. Ann is a bit more surprising but it's probably because there was more competition for "best girl" that casual players didn't wind up going down her Social link path.
@nessisonett Boss definitely doesn't get enough love. Pretty much the character I wanted Dojima in Persona 4 to be.

@strawhatcrew That's an odd way of spelling Makoto my guy, I think I have spare glasses you can borrow so you don't make that mistake again.
My boy Ryuji doesn't reserve alle this disrespect in P5 en P5S hes the one that feels likes the only charachter that truly likes Joker as a friend and when he stood up for Sofia was amazing. Ryuji always was a true friend. And let me remind you that he saved the PT in Shidos Palace.
If Morgana isn't last he's too high
The only thing I hated in the game is how they punish Ryuji for being rude to Morgana but not vice versa. Yeah I get it, it's a trope. I'm just not a fan of it.
Ryuji and Ann should be higher.
Chie was better than all of them.
