It seems the PlayStation 4 version of Kena: Bridge of Spirits is suffering from one or two nasty glitches on release day as users report a game-breaking bug encountered when using the Taro Mask halts their progress. At the time of writing, nobody seems to have encountered the issue on PS5. The mask is used to progress through the main story, and PS4 users are having problems with removing it from Kena's face once it's no longer needed. The camera gets stuck in the first-person perspective and essentially renders the game unplayable.
It appears the only way of fixing the bug is to reload your save but, of course, there's just as good a chance you'll encounter the glitch again when the Taro Mask is needed later on in the story. The issue is being reported enough across the internet that developer Ember Lab is likely already aware of the problem and is busy working on a fix. Until then, however, it seems PS4 players will have to put up with this flaw.
Our own Push Square user Shigurui encountered the problem too, writing on the forum: "You can't remove it once equipped, the camera freaks out and gets stuck in first-person mode. It completely halts game progression. How this wasn't caught is beyond belief. Stuck with a digital coaster until it gets patched. Highly unimpressed." Are you also having trouble with this bug? Probably an honest mistake, but seriously how could they NOT find this?
I know this sounds silly but is the character you play as in this male or female?
And this is why Pushsquare very much SHOULD Continue to review PS4 versions of the game. I mean come on, it's a 10 hour game, could have played it twice. đ
I know a lot of readers have a PS5 but we're still talking about 90m to 10m so surely I'm not the only one. đ¤ˇ
@Snake_V5 Why lol
Got the bug too but reloading the save file fixed it and definitely didn't leave me 'stuck with a digital coaster' đ
@Octane Because I can't tell if the person is male or female.
@Snake_V5 you play as female
@Klaptrap Cool.
@FixMadden22 I was thinking the same. Along the lines of "testing?" But then I thought thousands of players are more likely to run into bugs, than one tester who plays it maybe 10s of times, if that.
Should be smooth as Tennessee Whiskey by the time the Physical version hits the shelves đ
Shame for the all digital folk though I guess âšī¸
Currently downloading it on ps5 can't wait to give it a go been looking forward for it since the reveal last year only a few more minutes to go đđđ
Happy to buy and play the game in a couple of weeks after the first patches have been released.
Guess I'm glad I didn't pick this up at launch! It'd be annoying to run into a bug this severe.
@PhhhCough Yeah, 300,000 players playing a game for an hour is equivalent to 20 playtesters each playing for 15,000 hours - that's almost two years of non-stop, uninterrupted play without sleep or toilet breaks.
@Klaptrap - Glad you got past it but in my case the game is unplayable. Loading a save removed the mask but I still have to equip it to continue and the bug hits again. I tried about a dozen times and it happened every single time. So yeah, I'm stuck with a digital coaster until it gets patched.
Had a couple of bugs so far playing PS5. Most annoying so far has been not being able to move an object using the Rot. No matter where you try to tell them where to go they just stay on the spot and refuse to move. Reloading hasnât solved it. Mildy annoying but not game breaking. On the whole really enjoying the game though! Itâs a really lovely pace and quite chilled out.
@Shigurui oh that's terrible đ I guess I was lucky then đ hopefully they will release a patch soon so you can continue this gem đ
Been playing the last 2hrs on PS5. Thankfully no bugs like that during my playthrough so far.
Good fun so far and visually/audibly stunning.
The only strange thing for me was for the first 5mins I felt a bit motion sick when moving the camera. There seemed to be a slight disconnect.
I'm not someone who is prone to motion sickness at all, perfectly fine playing other 60fps games, so this struck me as super weird.
I fell through the ground and got stuck on PS5. Other than that it's been fine.
@Splat Happens to me as well, sometimes I'm not even playing a video game.
@Sebatrox guys can be cute too cmon đ
This issue is also on PS5. Whenever I put on the mask I canât use my camera and canât exit. I canât even get past the first door in the area where you get it.
People are so blown away by the game's visuals they get stuck in place admiring them đ¤Ŗ
I'm on ps5 and thankfully haven't had any issues. It's an old school belter though and i can smell the platinum already!
@Snake_V5 Female. She actually reminds me of Kameo the main character you played as in Kameo Elements of Power an Xbox 360 launch game.
@rjejr probably because not long after launch new software sales tend to skew significantly towards the new console
@Cherip-the-Ripper No, they're ugly and have beards and stuff.
I guess this is what you get for not buying a PS5 from a reseller and playing it on there.
@LiamCroft
This bug doesnât make the game a âdigital coasterâ the game has to be reloaded, not great admittedly but not the same thing at all.
This is the second time in a week Push Square have published exaggerated misinformation. (The first was the new PS4 firmware âbrickingâ consolesâĻ which they were able to use i.e. not bricked )
Donât like to be the pedant but we rely on you for accurate information not shock jock style fake news.
@themightyant That's a quote from one of your fellow Push Square users. The fact you can reload the game is also mentioned in the article.
@LiamCroft I'm aware it was a quote, that was clear, but you are helping spread the misinformation.
If I get a quote of someone saying "The world is flat" does that make it OK to publish it?
Trying to be constructive.
@rjejr Exactly my point when I've asked for a PS4 review of some titles to see if there are any problems, frame-rate issues or improvements on the Pro. Backwards compatible testing on a PS5 doesn't tell the whole story!
Looks like Ember Lab have either:
1) been lucky to not encounter the bug as it seems it doesn't happen all the time (luck) or, more likely
2) play tested on the PS5 and assumed that code compiling away in the background for the PS4 would be fine (lazy)
That said, @Kannibal seems to say that the bug is on the white wonder too?
When bug and glitche articles are out before the reviews.
@Ward_ting Iâve had this issue too! Itâs annoying me so much.
@Codessa PushSquare review came out at 11:45am yesterday. This article was at 5:15pm.
They just changed the order stack for some reason on the home page.
NX Gamer has done a performance review for IGN of all PS versions of Kena for anyone curious:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUugbGQpk7w
Also based on that reddit post, looks like Ember Labs have taken note as they commented and said are working on a fix.
@Zinger_Stacker yea it really is! As somebody who intended on getting the platinum itâs quite annoying not being able to collect everything due to this bug. Hopefully it gets fixed
@Ward_ting okay, so, I did it! I dunno what part of what I did made it work. But if youâre talking about the one up a tree where the shrine is, when the Rot tip the bucket, I just restarted the PlayStation, then noticed the blob was back in the bucket, so I went up made the rot spill it again and just went as quick as I could to make it move! And it actually moved for me! I obviously dunno if this will work but I hope so for you!
@Zinger_Stacker ah yes! That is exactly the one I am having issues with! Maybe next time I go on it will work for me then. Itâs reassuring that you got it working. Thanks!
@Kannibal Interesting. I'm playing on PS5 and I put on the mask a bunch of times and it never happened. I'm curious what the conditions are for it to happen. There's no way it's happening to everyone on PS4 either, because it would've been caught during the most basic play tests.
@Perryg92 Thanks for this! All the reviews so far have been purely PS5 so it's nice to see another site actually covering what we want to see.
Only looking at this on a laptop 1080p screen but I really can't see much difference between the platforms?
PS4 Pro here, I have used the mask several times with no issues yet. Loving the game so far! I wish the controls were a bit smoother but everything else is just delightful
Havenât heard from anyone that owns this on PS4 that this is happening. Me and a bunch of my friends are playing this and Iâm the only one with a PS5. This canât be platform wide???
I can confirm this bug doesn't appear on the PC version, used the mask a few times now, without a problem.
To those asking "how was this possible" I have this to say: how is it possible for Deathloop to be unplayable on PC, with a ton of framedrops even on very high end rigs? And that game is made by Arkane Studios, a dev who is big, renowned, and Deathloop is not their first game.
Mistakes are bound to happen, since people are making the games we play, not robots... the most important thing is to admit them and correct them as soon as possible.
@sanderson72 Yeah, as I've mentioned below we have a few huge titles being dual released and I really think PS needs to test them out a bit on PS4 to at least make sure they aren't Cyberpunk. đ
Some side by side vids would be nice. Here's a good one of Hyrule Warriors running on New 3DS and walking on OG 3DS. Glaringly obvious differences.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Have we seen sales numbers for most of the dual release games? I've no doubt the PS5 is higher as a lot of those 90m PS4 are simply collecting dust at this point. But as a website that focuses ONLY on Playstation I don't think it's asking too much for them to test if a game works on PS4?
God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West are coming to both, I very much doubt they'll play the same on both. But some people will be playing them on PS4, especially if Sony can't get significantly more PS5 into our hands. I sure they must still have a PS4 in Pushsquare Towers laying around.
@rjejr They only got Hyrule Warriors to run smoother on New 3DS because they removed most of the enemies from the maps. Seriously having played the New 3DS version recently and compared it to the Switch and Wii U the New 3DS version was nearly empty in comparison.
@LiamCroft Just encountered another bug on PS5 it may be worth alerting people to. After finishing a boss the whole game slowed down to a crawl, stayed that way and the cutscene never kicked in. Pausing and loading the last save didn't help as the same thing happened at the end of the boss fight two more times.
I googled it and it is a known issue Ember lab is working on. But thankfully there is a fix. Either close the game and reload or return to the main menu and reload.

@RubyCarbuncle "They only got Hyrule Warriors to run smoother on New 3DS because they removed most of the enemies from the maps."
Really? Judging by that video comparison I'd guess the New 3DS version had twice as many enemies, but that is early in the game so I suppose it could change later.
Even without more enemies New 3DS ran at 30 fps vs 20 on old 3DS and the 3D effect only worked on New 3DS. So getting back to my original point: if Pushsquare wants to be the go to Playstation website they should spend some time on high level PS4 games to see how well they work, or don't.đ¤ˇ
Think I'll stick to BOTW 1 and 2.
Hopefully they get this bug sorted out fast for PS4 owners!
@rjejr Unfortunately, there seem to be a few reviewers on this site too blinded by the glare coming off the white side of the 5.
@get2sammyb and @ShogunRok have both responded a few times when I've asked how a PS4 game runs on a PS4 (mainly from the Pro angle, I admit) but some of the others on here seem to have forgotten the ~120 million seller funny black box.
Your comment of "if Pushsquare wants to be the go to Playstation website they should spend some time on high level PS4 games to see how well they work, or don't" has hit the nail on the head perfectly.
Either way, looks like a patch has dropped https://www.psu.com/news/kena-bridge-of-spirits-update-1-05-fixes-mask-bug-temporarily-removes-resume-game-ps5-activities-option/ If anyone with an actual PS4 could test it, that'd be great thanks!
@sanderson72 Thanks. I think the problem is Pushsquare knows "next gen" but Sony doesn't, hypnotized by the shiny white. đ
OK that was a joke, but really if all the big games were going to be next Gen only then I don't think it would be that big of a deal, they wouldn't need to test every indie and Just Dance on last Gen. But with at least another year of PS5 AAA exclusives suddenly not all that exclusive, I think they should do some minimal playing on the PS4. Kena is a Sony exclusive, it's not some mobile port nobody cares about.
And then there's that lack of inventory issue. đ
