One of the standout launch titles for PlayStation 5 was undoubtedly Demon's Souls, a stellar remake of the game that kickstarted the Souls-like formula. Developed by Bluepoint Games, the action RPG is a beautiful recreation of the PS3 original, neatening up some archaic systems while polishing the visuals to a stunning sheen. It seems that it resonated with early adopters pretty well, too, if recent sales data is anything to go by.
It's just been announced that Bluepoint Games is joining PlayStation Studios as a first-party team, and within the press release for this news is an update to the sales figure for the team's latest effort. As of 19th September 2021, Demon's Souls has sold "more than 1.4 million copies" since its initial launch. Considering PS5 has sold over 10 million units, that's not a bad attach rate for what is a pretty hardcore release.
Earlier in the year, Sony released some sales figures for other major PlayStation exclusives, such as Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. It seems all of them are doing well, which is always good to see.

Still my favorite PS5 game to date! After comes Returnal I believe.. Not much PS5 only games anyway
Even though I much prefer the mechanics of Bloodborne or Sekiro, this game is absolutely worth it. It has such an impressive atmosphere. Great stuff!
I still don’t have a PS5 but Demons Souls and Returnal will be the first on my list of games to pick up when I do.
Marvellous game. By far the games I've spent the must time on with my PS5 has been this, a replay of Bloodborne (finally doing the DLC) and Returnal, which I just made significant progress with after months of banging my head against the brick wall of biome 3. After I'm thinking of having a crack at Dark Souls 3 or Nioh.
All in all PS5 has turned into my console of choice for ball busting difficulty! Surprised my controller has lasted this long
And I would hazard a guess it will sell a lot more copies once the price comes down to a reasonable amount for the majority. Me included. Cannot wait to play it other than waiting for said price drop
Apparently this was a flop according to people who assume that not releasing figures = flop.
Given it was the only launch title it couldn't not sell. I wonder how many had buyer's remorse!
I don’t understand why some people expect niche games like demon souls and Returnal to sell 10 plus million.
That’s pretty good number for a remake, I bluepoint keep making this kind of amazing remakes 😃
100% the best PS5 game, and that's coming from someone who had never played a souls game and platinumd this.
Was the game I bought my ps5 for, was the first game that I played on launch day
@nessisonett I think people mix up Sony being silent and Microsoft being silent 🤔🙈
@4kgk2 Those games have sold very well considering the size of the install base. The ratio is very impressive, which some don't seem to take into account. It's not an exact science the scaling over install base but I bet there is relative safety in the assumptions 🤔
@cheonseojin What is it with you people who give up at the first sign of resistance? 🙈
After the phenomenal job Bluepoint did with the Demon's Souls Remake, and if FromSoftware has no plans to develop Bloodborne 2, I think Bluepoint could fill that SoulsBorne void by potentially developing a Demon Souls 2.
Beautiful game but hard as BLEEP though. I had to take a break from playing it but I will be going back to it soon.
Well deserved! Can’t emphasize enough how much of an amazing remake this is. I’m well over 100 hours into it and the artwork and Bluepoint’s interpretation of things are so well done.
1.4 million I believe already puts it well ahead of the PS3 original’s total sales. It’s great that more people are experiencing this game.
@KayOL77 First sign of resistance? They said they tried for weeks!
@DeepSpace5D The original version sold 250,000 copies about 11 months after release, so in terms of the same time period it's completely smashed it. I can see it continuing to sell too as more people get PS5s, and Souls fans pick it up along with Elden Ring.
@JustPlainLoco Or just leave it be. Miyazaki doesn't like to make sequels to games that don't need them.
1.4M doesn't sound so great. Better than returnal but not so great. Hopefully, though, this indicates Sony's willingness to continue smaller, niche, experimental games that don't sell tremendously, which they've overall showed they aren't otherwise interested in anymore.
@Orpheus79V
Yeah I thought I remembered the PS3 numbers being quite low, the Souls series hadn’t taken off yet with this being the first entry. Glad to see a lot more are enjoying it this time around.
@KippDynamite ....but they call themselves...Gamers? 🙈
Its in my backlog. I smashed the iron spider then ratchet came along and turned my head. Good game though
I love this game. Best thing I've played in years, and still my favorite PS5 first party release, or anything on PS5 I've played for that matter.
I know 1.4 million is good if you consider the ratio of sales to current PS5 owners (over 10% of people who own a PS5 bought this game - yikes!). But still, I want to see that number higher, as it is truly deserving.
I own a PS5 but still haven't gotten around to buying, waiting for a $35 sale (hopefully this Black Friday).
Didn't care for it on PS3 so can't imagine the PS5 remake would sway me.
Thing is, R&C: Rift Apart, Returnal and Demon's Souls are STILL the only go-to games if you want to show off why you bought a PS5 as they are the only sort-of 'next-gen' titles (or more accurately, titles that Sony didn't cross gen).
As to whether the PS4 could do a decent punt at these games, well, we've already had that discussion...
