Summer Game Fest: Kickoff Live will quite literally kick-off a series of digital showcases and events later this week, and host Geoff Keighley has revealed the first announcement we can expect from his own show. It will be a brand new game from Borderlands developer Gearbox Software, and if a recent leak is anything to go by, this will likely be a spin-off from the main series focused on Tiny Tina. Keighley teased the announcement on Twitter, but that's about as far as he went.
The leak in question said publisher 2K Games has a Borderlands spin-off called Wonderlands in the works alongside an XCOM game themed around Marvel characters. The former, at least, does indeed seem to be real now that Keighley has teased the reveal for Summer Games Fest: Kickoff Live. As a quick reminder, the digital event takes place this Thursday at 7pm BST / 11am PDT / 2pm EDT and you'll be able to catch it right here on Push Square. Definitely not. Borderlands is dead to me. As is 2K, why not?
Gearbox seems incapable of creating any new characters within the Borderlands universe that are worth a damn. Everything good that series did has been beaten to death because they are stagnant and keep retreading the same ***** over and over.
B3 was an absolute chore to get through. The entire script was grating and juvenile.
I cannot imagine an entire game as or alongside Tiny Tina unless maybe it takes a completely new approach to Borderlands game design (as in maybe a third person game focused on destruction a la Red Faction Guerilla or something).
Tiny Tina getting a game really isn't a surprise. She's one of the most popular characters from Borderlands(doesn't matter how annoying she can be at some times lol) and she should have been playable in Borderlands 3 if they made DLC characters(Moxxi should have been as well).
The real question is how long is the game, is it just her and can we really handle a game with Tiny Tina's sense of humor which half of the time is terrible or too much ll.
@QBGaming12 The bigger question (to me) is how do you stick to the standard Borderlands formula if it's going to "star" Tiny Tina? Do we play as her? Do we not have a choice? Or is she more like our main point of contact in the game and we still get to create our own vault hunter?
If it's a game where you play as her I'd rather they switch up the formula completely and not make an FPS looter shooter. Give us something fresh to match an all new perspective.
@QBGaming12 Apparently you don't play as Tiny Tina. You play as Vault Hunters similar to her DLC for Borderlands 2.
@MFTWrecks I'm honestly surprised they didn't make her a DLC character in Borderlands 3 along with Moxxi because it seemed like they were setup for that.
I think you play as her in this game and they change up the formula a bit and you get some fan favorites maybe as characters. Moxxi, Hammerlock, etc.
It's just Tiny Tina can be a lot to handle and if it's called "Wonderlands" you know how crazy Tiny Tina is. It could either be way too much or too less. It will probably come out this summer/fall.
@arkhamtheknight12 I'm hoping you play as her at some point. Her and Moxxi have always been on my list as DLC characters that should be added to Borderlands. Hopefully they add Gaige back as well.
Hammerlock would be funny too.
@liamcroft didn’t kochmedia/THQ nordic buy gearbox and all its IP’s including borderlands last year?
@liamcroft I googled it. 2K does indeed not own gearbox and borderlands anymore.
@darkswabber 2K still has control over the Borderlands IP.
I genuinely couldn't think of anything worse than a Tiny Tina game, I always found her really annoying.
@LiamCroft so they co-own the IP together with gearbox? Otherwise google isn’t correct (I know google and Wikipedia aren’t valid sources).
@darkswabber 2K owns the IP and Gearbox's purchase hasn't affected the relationship. "The merger does not change 2K's relationship with Gearbox nor our role as the publisher for the Borderlands IP or any other projects we are currently working on with the studio."
I find her extremely obnoxious so this is a very easy pass if true.
Always up for more Borderlands. Even though I completely rinsed the game on PS4 I just bought BL3 Ultimate Edition to do it all over again on Series S. Looking forward to finding out more about this.
An xcom style game in the borderlands universe would be something I'd be way more interested in. That said, Tiny Tina was one of the worst things about the recent borderlands games, so why on earth she's the figurehead eludes me.
Tiny Tina spinoff sounds awesome, hopefully this is the game they are teasing!
this sounds like an april fool's joke. also, what's with the wretched gearbox art direction? it is so dated now as they have been using it for a good 15 years. i think this developer is on very thin ice financially and creatively. time to evolve or go bust gearbox!
Ehhhhh, Tiny Tina was a cute character in a limited capacity during BL2 and barely palatable in BL3. Knowing Gearbox, this isn't a rumor since they are the gaming industry's obnoxious younger cousin who get's in trouble for setting ***** on fire.
Gearbox still has Duke Nukem right? I refuse to believe Forever will be the game it will be remembered by
I'm curious exactly how one would "literally kick-off" a series of digital showcases; every time I try to punch or kick a video file, I always seem to end up breaking my computer.
If it was Gaige I'd be interested. She was great fun to play.
Looking forward to this. Huge borderlands fan her with over 70+ plus days across all 5 games
