Think of all the best combinations in the world, and we’ll raise you this one: Marvel and Firaxis. According to a leak, the XCOM developer is working on a new superhero-themed strategy game, and it doesn’t take a genius to imagine what it would look like. The title was first reported in a Reddit leak earlier today, but Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has since corroborated the story – although he’s uncertain whether the title will be announced at E3 2021 later this month.
Other upcoming projects from 2K Games, according to the leak, include a Borderlands spin-off starring Tiny Tina as well as a crazy Cthulhu-themed title called Codename Vault. Oh, and the publisher’s also preparing NBA 2K22, because of course it is.
Obviously, the Marvel game is potentially the highlight here, so we’re hopeful that will be officially announced in the coming weeks. What do you make of these rumoured projects? Select your superhero in the comments section below.

This I think is a good combination and if done well a different and a masterpiece can be made in this genre.
Sounds like a very very good idea. This sorta thing, MOBA or hero shooter are the best ways to showcase the different characters.
Come on, Marvel... Let Nippon Ichi make a tactics Marvel game ala Disgaea.
Awww so close to getting a Thrawn Tactics game. Was thinking of a Star Wars XCOM style game where Grand Admiral Thrawn is the commander and how cool that could be. I guess going Marvel would be unique assuming each squadmember had unique super powers though.
@Jayslow Empire at War had a great Thrawn mod!
My son would love it but def. not my jam. And while I do love the Borderlands universe and Tiny Tina is a funny character, much like claptrap, she's only good in small doses. I can imagine a whole game of her would get old quickly.
XCOM looks so incredibly slow from what I’ve seen. I’m shocked that developers will have potentially made two games with some of my favorite characters that I don’t want to play. So sad.
I surprisingly didn't care for Xcom when I played Xcom 2. Never played the original but it was too much of a emphasis on dice rolls for me. I actually liked Mario and Rabbids better since there was less luck involved with that one.
None the less this could be cool for those people that like Xcom.
I've played (and finished multiple times) all xcom games since Microprose's UFO Enemy Unknown, so one can say I'm fan of xcom games. I'm also fan of Freedom Force vs 3rd Reich. This news rings my bell and if it is at least half of xcom fun, than I have looong time to spend with this game... 🙂 Wolverine solo... 😁
I'd be happy for a superhero XCOM but certainly not a dumbed down children friendly marvel one
@Korgon This. Xcom games have a really cool premise but the RNG is absolutely horrible and ruins the fun for me.
I prefer disgaea games or squareenix project triangle for isometric strategy games.
This sounds really cool but XCOM games are also extremely methodical and I can't imagine an RTS game would do a super great job of showcasing specific powers and be super interesting visually unless the art direction is just really creative
This is unrelated to Marvel, but I'd kill for a Mass Effect themed XCOM game.
@djlard Freedom Force was fantastic! I love Marvel, so I'm excited for this, but a Freedom Force follow-up would be almost as cool.
Guaranteed it will be better than the Avengers live service disaster
You can call me crazy, but you know which franchise would be cool to have a XCOM-like game? Naruto!
ugh, Why does Marvel have to be in EVERYTHING!
@vict0RGM I believe you. At least, there is a "Bleach"-tactics-game.
@FatalBubbles What kind of game do you imagine for the "Avengers"? Honest question.
@NinjaWaddleDee This is a great idea. Would play that on top of a "Mass Effect"-space-sim, a "Mass Effect"-RTS, a "Mass Effect"-metroidvania, a "Mass Effect"-racing game and a "Mass Effect"-MMO. Just bring me all the "Mass Effect"-stuff. That universe and lore is so rich, all this should be super easy and lucrative. Sadly, the ending of part 3 somewhat destroyed all this potential. Let's see, if they can revive the franchise with "Mass Effect 4".
@Migoshuro Avengers dating sim is the obvious choice.
@redd214 the borderlands games are so unfunny. Grating. Obnoxious.
This is obviously great news for Marvel fans, but it makes me think we'll be waiting even longer for XCom 3.
It's hard not to be a little impatient after getting to end end of the XCom 2 campaign back in 2016 and seeing them hint at some of the possibilities for what is to come. War of the Chosen was a great upgrade in 2017, which got me even more hyped, and then from following what's going on at the studio I was all ready for a surprise repeat announcement for 2020/21, only to get... Chimera Squad. Which was cool and all, but it didn't have the depth of the main series games, and just leaves you wanting more.
Sounds like it could be amazing... Which means they will probarbly balls it up.
I am so excited at the idea of Marvel XCOM.
@Migoshuro Action adventure. Something closer to Crystal’s newer TR but more linear is what I had hoped for when they announced they were making one. I’d also be interested in something in the vein of Ultimate Alliance.
@theheadofabroom This. I'm kind of gutted cause I was sure we might hear something soon but yeah now I kind of doubt it. I just want glorious cistomisation, loads of new maps and abilities and classes. Aww it makes me smile just thinking about it! And it's going to be even further away now probably.
@Arnna thanks for sharing, hope you've found games that are more aligned with your funny bone!
@Iroha I mean I'd imagine there's commonality in the engine-work they'll be doing, but I can see AvangersCom being a lot more like Chimera Squad than the main series, given the big characters. Hopefully they have enough characters that they can let us have permanent scars and Permadeath?
Firaxis are big enough to work on more than one game at a time, but this will certainly slow things down, as a big franchise tie-in has the potential to bring in new players who might see the fan base's more vocal users' "Hurr Hurr XCom hard! Stay away wimps" mentality as off-putting, when the easier difficulty settings are really quite forgiving.
@Subsided Mario x Rabbids is a pretty good blueprint for how to “dumb-down” the XCOM formula, so I think it’s possible to make an accessible game with some depth.
Don’t typically give a flyin’ poop about Marvel, but this sounds like a great idea... Hopefully it’s more XCOM 2 and less Chimera Squad...
@Korgon Would love a new Mario Rabbids or Nintendo themed Xcom type game announced at E3. Not likely but would be a great surprise.
@Arnna borderlands 2 is actually pretty funny
@Grimwood turn based combat is actually really fun. I recommend XCOM enemy within or gears tactics. Both amazing games
No thank you, I'd rather have the rumored D.C. vs. Marvel fighting game, that is supposedly being developed by NetherRealm.
