Since the industry and its consumers are shifting more and more towards digital purchases, the likes of the weekly physical UK sales charts just aren't really cutting it anymore for tracking game sales. Thankfully, Sony shares a monthly list of the best-selling titles on the PlayStation Store, providing us with a much better understanding of what PS5 and PS4 owners are actually buying. The charts for April 2021 make for good reading as far as Housemarque's Returnal is concerned too, which after just one day of availability across the month, took third place in the USA and Canada as well as fourth spot across Europe.
We assume the position bundles together PS5 digital pre-orders as well as sales made on the day of release, but those weren't enough to top the chart. MLB The Show 21 took that accolade in the US and Canada while FIFA 21 is in first place in Europe for the third consecutive month. Outriders then takes second spot in both regions. The rest of the top 10 is packed full of quality titles like It Takes Two, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Mortal Kombat 11. Remember, that's all based on native PS5 titles and doesn't include free upgrades.
As for PS4 games, Grand Theft Auto V was โ amazingly โ the best-selling game in Europe for the month of April 2021 while baseball once again hit a homerun with MLB The Show 21 dominating the US and Canada. Beat Saber was the top-selling PlayStation VR game (as usual) in both territories, and Call of Duty: Warzone brought in the most cash in the free-to-play market. Fortnite and Rocket League weren't far behind, however.

@johncalmc
You're right. Cat, then.
@LordSteev mmmmm, cat, I'll have a plate, please ๐ฝ
@Turismo4GT
Due to the current cat shortage, your cat will be ready in early 2023. Thank you for your patience!
@lolwhatno
Talk to @Turismo4GT, I sense a real profit opportunity here!
That's what I was talking about. That minority of complainers are exactly that - a minority.
Returnal charting so high with one day on the shelves speaks volume.
Incredible game. Finished it yesterday.
Hope that's enough for Sony to put a ring on Housemarques finger before someone else might do that.
This is a good data - sad that Nier Replicant is so low though.
I'm a little surprised that Rocket League is only one step lower in US/Canada than in Europe.
Do they give out this data for Japan on the Japanese blog? I'm curious if there are any gems people elsewhere are playing for me to find
@JAMes-BroWWWn You took that positively, I took it negatively. I understand itโs only one day but I bet Sonyโs traditional AAA games would have placed 1st.
@OmegaStriver How can you read that and come away with a negative take?
It released on the last day of the month, exclusively on a platform that's still in it's infancy with a fraction of the user base of the PS4, and is a very niche type of game with a relatively hard difficulty curve, yet it still managed 3rd and 4th respectively in digital sales. That's really impressive.
I disagree with your comment about "traditional AAA" as well. As of March this year there were 109 million active PSN users, we know at most that PS5 makes up 7.8 of those if they're all active, which isn't the case because who knows how many are sitting in the hands of dirty scalping cu*ts. Either way, any game releasing exclusively on PS5 at the moment is going to struggle to top the sales charts against a market with overwhelming majority.
Just beat Returnal. Itโs early, but still My GOTY
Returnal is amazing regardless of how well it does or doesn't sell. But hopefully it continues to sell well via word of mouth so we get more games like it.
Wow, it couldn't even outsell an 8 month old game with its pre-orders... ouch. Fifa has been in multiple sales since late November, so surely most who wanted it have got it.
Do people realize Returnal is a ps5 only game so it Debuting in fifth spot on PlayStation store chart is actually good.
@Loftimus Iโm so tried of you complaining about this game because of its price every article we get it you to poor to buy PlayStation games at full price.
@4kgk2 lmao not even close. I'm not here for you so i'm not bothered about what you're tired of. Have you heared of the ignore button
@4kgk2 and i wasnt complaining. I was simply pointing out that it has bombed.... In a sales article's comment section. I'm not happy that it has bombed because of the price, i'm mad that Sony have priced it out of having a fair crack. All my negativity is towards Sony.
Fantastic game. I've died about 45 to 50 times in total now but that doesn't bother me at all and when I eventually beat it which I will it will feel very satisfying indeed.
I'm convinced one of these days they'll announce all future fizzy drink bottles will be recycled from Fifa game cases alone.
Everyone that has played the game loves it including me. The only negatives are from people who havenโt played it. Hmmm
@Jayofmaya I used 2 be a supervisor 4 a plastics recycling company and if I saw copies of fifa coming through (or any EA product ๐) I would of instructed the lads to take them out into the yard run them over with FLT truck sweep the remains into a pile and set fire to them, b4 contaminating my machinary with their filth ๐ฅ๐๐๐
@Sh3p3000 legendary comment haha fully agree! Apart from a good Battlefield that is (EA product wise and thinking on it, I loved that Jedi game they did). I just loathe football games, makes no sense to me.
