The latest PlayStation 5 firmware update is now available to download and install on your console. System software version 21.01-03.00.00.38 is ready to roll, and it's the biggest update to PS5 yet.
Sony announced yesterday that this firmware update was coming, and it's packed with quality of life changes that will make some things a little easier. Here are the major changes and improvements introduced with this update:
- You'll be able to store PS5 games on external USB drives
- Share Play support between PS4 and PS5 consoles
- Request to join Game Sessions
- Improvements to Game Base
- Quick options for disabling Game Chat and adjusting voice volumes
- Pre-downloading game updates
- Customise and search your Game Library
- Improvements to Screen Zoom
- New Trophy settings and stats
After installing this update — which clocks in at 902.3MB, by the way — you can store PS5 games on USB drives, which is great for freeing up precious real estate on your console's SSD. You can't play PS5 games installed on external devices, though, so you'll have to move them back across when you're ready.

So, time to get your PS5s up to date. Are you excited for these changes? Tell us in the comments section below.

Looks like there's a lot of features, such as the possibility to turn off HDR on games/apps that don't support it.
I like the little check sync status of saved data when you right clight on a game.. thats nice! And yes, hiding things in your library is back
Well, they didn’t change the trophy viewing issues, and I had to go through every PS Now game and hide it from my library individually...as I will need to do with most of my physical games as I no longer own them. So, not the best thought out but at least it’s possible to tidy up the library with a bit of elbow grease.
@ED_209 cool! Does it have to be done manually the first time or does it auto-detect it?
On trophy page you can now press square to show hidden information on unachieved trophies (rather than press options then select show hidden info)
There's also a 120hz toggle option now.
Press option button on games installed to ssd and i swear there are now more options than before. My disc drive just started spinning up randomly again though so that isnt fixed 😐
YES! 4K 120fps now works on Samsung TVs. Previously 120fps dropped to 1080p.
You can easily unfollow loads of games in the settings menu now, instead of having to go to each game's page individually.
Game base is abit annoying as it defaults to a parties tab meaning there is now an extra step to see which friends are online and what they are playing (you have to press R1 to go to friends list) - that was already more cumbersome than PS4 as it was
@Rob_230
Just noticed that. Makes it better (as in PS4 better). Wish they’d just let us set it all visible for all games at a system level though. People who care about trophies want to know what they have to do! Just don’t put any story spoilers in!
@Rob_230
Yes, there is a screen for deleting individual bits of game data (and got seeing what isn’t installed). Will be good for some games where you can delete, for example, multiplayer, or single player campaign once finished (at least for those with OCD or a stupid number of games installed). You can also upload it download data got that specific game, which is helpful.
@thefourfoldroot Totally agree. 9 times out of 10 there is no spoiler content in the trophy description anyway, so it seems a more sensible solution to just have everything visible.
Dualsense got a patch too. No idea what difference its made though.
@PaperAlien What do you mean?
Installed just now and updated my controllers - a few media apps also got updates.
I like that trophies stay sorted in your last selected order now.
There are still a few things that need work but can't get them all at once, eh?
Like... if you buy an add-on for a cross-gen game, there seems to be no way to download only the PS5 version from the store. It adds both to downloads and you have to cancel the PS4 one. Hopefully they improve this soon.
Curious to see how we can customize our library...
Does this mean, I can finally delete 💩 from my library? Bye Fortnite, you've been bugging me for years.
PS4 just recieved a new update too, no idea what it does.😁
I am loving this update. The individual player volume in party chat is a god send! The game hub is much cleaner with the parties and friend list separated, and the ability to store my PS5 games to my external 8TB HDD means I won't need an NVME drive extension later down the line.
I'm so chuffed!
Just tried to start a shareplay with my mate whos on ps4 and it doesnt work. Says it cant start theres no one you can invite to a share play session
@JapaneseSonic Go into the settings on your PS5 and make sure HDMI device link is disabled.
@phil_j How do you unfollow games anyway? I've never done that.
Nice, the name is stupid though, sony should name it version 1 or something like that rather than gibberish like this.
Finally a HDR fix is in place, no longer forcing non HDR content to be displayed in HDR 👍🏻
You have to change in the settings menu to only enable HDR when available.
@Gunners85 have they updated firmware on their PS4?
Great update.. in typical Sony fashion, a bit out of nowhere, but a lot of wanted fixes for me (cold storage for PS5 games being No. 1)
@Rob_230 no he hadnt updated on ps4. Thought it was ps5 only so all good now
Glad to see the top of the main dash screen has the 'dead icons' of old games (that you have deleted) now removed.
Made the centre piece of the experience a little ugly previously.
@Snake_V5 If I remember rightly, you had to option click on each individual game, and then select unfollow. It was a ballache basically. But now there is a big long list in the settings menu that you can check off all the games you want to unfollow.
It would be awesome if they included wireless firmware updates of the dualsense controller in some of the future ps5 updates.
This is one of the little things that MS has done right with their controller updates on XBSX. No need to connect to a usb cable.
@JapaneseSonic same here I think it's turned on the hdmi handshake or whatever its called.
@JapaneseSonic this was happening to me before the update and is so annoying. I even started powering off completely, rather than rest mode, which I never do.
@JapaneseSonic it only turns on the ps5 if your on the ps5 channel on your tv. So you need to set it away from the ps5 channel before you turn off but I never remember.
