PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has stated in a new interview with Nikkei that Sony is making sure the PS5 generation will contain the most exclusives titles it has ever put out for a single console. Translated by VGC, he said: "We have been quietly but steadily investing in high-quality games for PlayStation, and we will make sure that the PS5 generation will have more dedicated software than ever before." Ryan then goes on to explain how the company has bolstered its exclusive line-up in the past with mergers and acquisitions, with Insomniac Games provided as one example. "We will not rule out that option in the future."
Of course, the early years of the PS5's exclusive library are already beginning to take shape. Demon's Souls is out as we speak, Returnal is right around the corner, and then Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart follows in June. The list then improves when you factor in titles that also came to PS4 but run best on Sony's current-gen system such as Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West. Further out, we've got God of War Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 to look forward to. And with E3 season right around the corner, you have to assume Sony will have plans to flesh out that line-up further with new announcements and reveals.
Elsewhere in the interview, Jim Ryan once again commented on the situation surrounding Sony's presence in the Japanese market. He said: "It is important for us to provide software that fits the Japanese gaming community, and PS5 has included a lot of software from Japanese developers since its early stages. We will continue to strengthen our ties with Japanese developers and release content for PS5 that fits the Japanese market.” These strong relationships with teams from the east have led to the likes of Forspoken and Final Fantasy XVI tying themselves to PS5 with some form of exclusivity.
Are you excited by Jim Ryan's latest comments? Are you happy to hear the PS5 generation may well contain the biggest list of exclusive games on a Sony console ever? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

We will have lots of exclusives and then we will exclusively release them on PC, Xbox and Switch.
But... but... but... Sony has turned its back on the Japanese market...
@nessisonett yupp sure because MLB choosing to publish the show on xbox means that all ps exclusives are going to go to every other console...
@torne Turned its back on the Japanese market an indie games - you can clearly see that from the other recent news
https://twitter.com/asobudev/status/1385037136777289729?s=20
Hoorah!! More please
PlayStation All Stars 2 when Jim?
Sounds good, though I'm not going to get excited over unannounced games. Once they're ready to show them, then it'll get interesting.
Just buy bluepoint already.tbey are a proven studio already.and they can aquire housemarque and others.good to know that more games will come for the ps5.because a lot of sonys studios got multiple games being made .so thats good.word up son
I had hoped Sony would acquire more then Insomniac at this point.
Yeah he left out an important detail there, more exclusives than before...for a limited time
@torne It’s almost as if I’m joking.
More exclusives is good but how about variety? One thing I miss about the PS1 and PS2 era (even PSP and Vita) are the exclusive genres to choose from. Hack n Slash, JRPG, Platformers, etc. The PS4 also did well with the variety but not as extensive as the PS1 and PS2. With the restructuring of Japan Studios and Sony's focus on "blockbuster" hits like TLOU, I fear that the exclusive games for the PS5 will look and feel the same.
@nessisonett. You make no sense😴.when was the last time a PlayStation exclusive came to switch.that was the worst comment on pushsquare so far.and sony putting mlb the show to x box dont mean everything is coming.word up son
I believe him when he said "playstation believe in generation", then miles morales and horizon fw still will be released on ps4, with god of war still unclear.
I believe him when he said "japanese is important to playstation", then he shut down japanese studio and make x the default ok button for japanese gamer.
Now playstation is porting their exclusive to pc and even some to xbox and I supposed to believe this? Yeah, no thanks.
@playstation1995 Exactly. Do something good for once. Buy Bluepoint and Housemarque. It's been bad news after bad news, week after week.
Timed exclusives dont count Jim give me full Ps5 console exclusives NOT also playable on Ps4 and PC.
If it's smaller studios that have close ties with Sony anyway, like Housemarque or Bluepoint, fine, but I don't want to see Sony or MS making anymore big purchases like what happened with Bethesda. It's bad enough that happened, don't need to see more of it.
@Voltan OH NO! Sony are clearly DOOMED now!
@wiiware
Miles Morales also being on PS4 made sense since it's more a half-step based on a game developed for PS4 rather than a true sequel. Agree with you on everything else though. Horizon Forbidden West being on cross-generation is massively disappointing. Will be a great game for sure but should've been one that Sony could use to sell PS5s.
@Gamer83 what about studios like Remedy, Platinum Games or Techland?
@Gamer83 Yeah. I don't get it. Why Demon Souls, Ratchet, Returnal next-gen only, and horizon, which is later, cross gen? Especially when Horizon is expected to look the best out of these. I think.
....but no Days Gone 2
Persona 6 when?
@Ithinkyousuck
Don't want to see anybody buy those companies, I'd prefer they stay independent. Same with Capcom, Sega, SquareEnix, Bandai Namco, Koei Tecmo, EA, Ubisoft, Take Two, etc. I don't like the consolidating of the market, what I'm seeing from MS is disgusting me and I'd say the same if it was Sony. Again, small-mid size studios with a long-running relationships to begin with (Playground and MS, Insomniac and Sony, Next Level Games and Nintendo), I'm ok with that, the Bethesda purchase not so much.
@nessisonett 🤣. You fooled me too for a second. I thought you were mindlessly trolling. 🤣
@playstation1995 especially if they were involved in a proper Bloodborne remake. 😍😍😍
@Ithinkyousuck Horizon Forbidden West will have started development on PS4. As a large open World game, it will require more resources and time to build. Demons Souls is a port so bluepoint built on what was already there. Ratchet will be a series of smaller connected worlds and Returnal is a smaller scale game.
In each case the development time is inevitably shorter than Guerilla will have had in creating a brand new world. If they were building on the same world as the first game then im sure it would have targetted PS5 only, but in this case it makes a lot of sense financially, given the comparitive level of funding Sony will have put into developing the game
As a fp exclusive, you will still massively benefit from improved visual fidelity, load times, dualsense features, draw distance and quality of life features on ps5.
@Gamer83 I don’t know if you’ve noticed this. Sony seem to be having NO problem selling ps5s.
@Gamer83 but MS had to do it that way. I don't get it. They never built relationships with studios. They had to buy out a publishers. Without Bethesda, MS would be in a very hard situation. Some of those studios I mentioned need support and it's better than sony to help them than any other studio, don't you agree?
@Ashina
I hear your concerns, but if I may, I politely assume you have been a little misguided by the recent and unfounded headlines/speculation rather than what's actually happening.
In the launch period for the PS5 alone (and concentrating on first party alone) you had:
*Spiderman Miles Morales - the AAA blockbuster
*Sackboy A Big Adventure - a 3D platformer
*Demon's Souls - a hardcore, niche RPG
*Astro's Playroom - an innovative tech showcase, 3D platformer
*Destruction All-Stars - the Arcade, multiplayer game
I also believe we are still in the launch period so let's add Returnal in there - the Super fast, Rogue-lite shoot em up mixed with Sony's trademark cinematic storytelling. And then we'll have Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart - a Pixar style, Action adventure/platformer game.
Based on actual evidence and not speculation, the exact opposite to your concerns is true. And remember, this was just the first party games. Sony's dedication to 3rd Party, more niche exclusives such as Bugsnax, Oddworld Soulstorm and Kena Bridge of Spirits have also been launched/to be launched soon.
I have no other conclusion to come to other than Sony are more diverse and "on it" than ever before. It's certainly the most diverse launch line up they've ever had.
We'll see if this winning streak continues. I have no doubts, however.
@Rob_230 I think that's more of a reason for it to be a ps5 game. They should've thought it would have taken this long that it would be a ps5 game. They can still take advantage of the ps5 console. I want to see flying mounts for example.
"PS5 generation will have more timed console dedicated software than ever before."
I fixed it for him 😊 We know many of these games looking at recent trends will be on PC which by definition makes it not exclusive to Playstation.
"We will continue to strengthen our ties with Japanese developers and release content for PS5 that fits the Japanese market, just as long as we aren't the ones actually making said software"
I fixed that one too, sorry to be so negative so early in the morning but I'm still butthurt over Japan studio 🤷
PS5 has already been better than PS4's first few months in my opinion. They're off to a great start.
@get2sammyb Yes. All we had was mediocre killzone and the worst infamous. Ps5 is great in comparison for its 1st year.
2nd year? bloodborne and until dawn vs god of war ragnarok, gt7, forspoken, ff16 and whatever else? common now
ps5 is doing it better
this hack is just gonna repeat the ps4 generation of nothing but interactable-movies , and the same copy/paste open-world RPG games.
and no multiplayer games. #fireryan
I have no issues with Mr Jim Ryan currently. I honestly believe he is simply (as he's already said) letting the games do the talking. I personally like this way, but I can understand the flip side too, especially for news sites such as this one.
I've been a fan of PlayStation since '94 and remember Mr Ryan throughout the years. We must remember that he spearheaded the movement to turn around the PS3's fortunes in Europe, ultimately allowing it to come out on top in the region and thus allowing the PS4 and PlayStation as a whole to begin its global dominance the following generation. I think based on that and his other achievements, he's an obvious go-to for a leadership candidate.
Although I understand certain speculative concerns such as him coming from a leading Marketing role, that he could be all about the numbers (and all leaders have to be to a large degree), I think it's way too early to be writing him off, I'm liking most of what the man is saying, especially in this new interview and his results are backing him up.
We'll see what happens. A critical eye is always healthy (the closure of the old stores), but constant bashings and calls for him to step down are completely unwarranted, especially considering his accolades as a veteran.
Can't wait for their next big gaming event. Just like their "Future of Gaming" event silenced those vocal critics back then, I'm confident they'll do it again. I do believe the competition will be fierce this time, though.
@Gamer83 I understand the business reason of course, it's just that don't talk about "believe in generations" while 2 of the biggest ps games are cross-gen titles. I'll believe him more if he's more honest from the beginning.
It's kind of embarassing final fantasy 7 yuffie dlc, a 3rd party games, is ps5 only while sony 1st party title like horizon fw is still cross-gen.
I am glad they are investing in many games, but exclusivity is bad for everyone. As long as I'm getting the game on PS5 it wouldn't bother me it other platforms had it. It would be better in fact to be able to have more discussion with a wider audience on a game if all platforms had it.
@Juanalf
Completely agree with you on all points.
Not a fan of the direction PS5 is heading right now, but I'm hoping things perk up whenever Sony do their E3 equivalent event.
@Elodin no a console need exclusives games to have it’s own identity and to be competitive.
@Ithinkyousuck. I know right.they taking too long.both studios are amazing.abd returnal is going to be amazing.word up son
@Elodin you like your switch? without exclusives, that thing wouldn't exist. You should care if there are exclusives, just a little at least.
@KayOL77. I want bloodborne 2.word up son
@playstation1995 They just have to get those 2. Returnal seems good and Demon Souls Remake is great from what I have played so far. They are very important assets. I don't care about anyone else but these two because they're basically nurtured by sony.
@Ithinkyousuck Horizon probably has a way bigger budget than the other games you mentioned and it will simply need to sell more copies. By there time it comes out there will be maybe 10 million PS5s out there but obviously not everyone is interested in Horizon. I'm pretty sure it has to be on PS4 to make sense financially.
@Voltan Is 3 million in the first 3 days not enough? They can keep the price for a year tho.
And this article doesn't mention games like Deathloop, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Kena and all the other Exclusives - timed or otherwise coming too - and this is just at the 'start' of this generation...
That's what they all say as devs jump a sinking ship.
Guess I'm buying a series X this gen, whelp I get to dust off all my old xbox games now, like Panzer Dragoon Orta.
People are still listening to Jim Ryan? Lol.
@Fenbops So far he's right tho. More games on ps5 than on ps4.
@Ithinkyousuck I honestly have no idea if that's enough or not
I agree Sony will have more timed exclusives but not more exclusives.
One less publisher out there and one with a lot of franchises under their belt so i just don't see it happening.
@Ithinkyousuck yes because PS5 can play PS4 games. There really isn’t a lot you can play on PS5 and not PS4 anyway.
@Voltan really? 200m budget? 3m x $70 plus the sales of the year?
@Fenbops Nope. I'm not talking about ps4 games.
Do you remember the big ps4 games that were released in the first 2 years?
I'll let you compare both list.
@Ithinkyousuck PS5 has had a better start then Ps3 and Ps4 partly because some of its games are cross generation. How many times we've heard of studios making super ambitious game for the launch of a new console only to be hit real late in the development cycle about the reality of the machine and then barely making it to the finish line with an half assed product. Horizon Forbidden West probably started development way before they got the PS5 devkit and they'll just have to upgrade things here and there to take advantage of the new console, it's too soon to properly create a big AAA open world that takes full advantages of the PS5 capabilities on launch year, these games take 3-5 years to make. Ratchet & Clank games have always had shorter development cycles, Demon's Souls is a remake and Returnal is a much "simpler" game. Yeah I'm also bummed out that it won't take full advantages of the PS5 but I'd rather have a great Cross gen game (Sackboy, Miles Morales) than nothing really interesting for years (Bloodborne came out in 2015).
@Katsuhono I mean I agree with you. The most impressive games will probably start in 2023, but sony knew when they were going to release the ps5 so I at least expected to change lanes with horizon 2 for it to take advantage of it. I'm playing miles and it's a good game, but not next-gen (only that it has ray tracing and 60fps).
Still better than Killzone and Infamous as offerings tho.
This seems to be controversial, but I don't really care whether games are exclusive to my console, as long as I can play them?
Obviously from a business perspective exclusives drive more people to your platform and earn you more money, but from a consumer perspective, I just want to play games and get the best possible experience doing so. Whether other people on another platform get that too doesn't really bother me, except for multiplayer where I want to be able to play with as many other people as possible.
@Ithinkyousuck I'm not sure what you're debating. Yes, we would all prefer PS5 only Horizon well those of us with PS5's. This is a business. Sony is not attempting to make games and hopes to earn back the budget, It's about profit. Maximising profit. The most profitable move is PS4/PS5 cross-gen. That's it.
@Alan_cartridge_ Giving a reason for people to buy a ps5 before they jump ships to gamepass it's also profit. Some people can only afford one console.
I always got that crossgen point, but I'm selfish and I want a game that takes advantage of the ps5. Especially for $70 price increase.
@Ithinkyousuck Horizon is a open world game that would have started development in 2017, early 2018. Before the Dev kits where in the wild. Let alone the final hardware. It takes longer to develop then a Ratchet n Clank. Design decisions are made around the CPU and Memory at the very beginning of development. You can't scale up after the fact for the game structural decisions. So they developed for the PS4 and will scale the resolution, loading times and draw distances which are scalable metrics. Making it PS5 only, would result in a later release and a team of Devs doing nothing in the meantime. I understand your wants. Unfortunately, it's not more profitable nor logistically better. They are not making it cross-gen to spite the fans. They are making it cross-gen to maximise profit and efficiency.
I'll believe it when I see it. Y'all remember the xbox one and how they claimed the same thing back in 2013...
I'd really like to see the numbers for PS and PS2 exclusives b/c I feel like both of those consoles had a ton of games you couldn't find anywhere else - at the time, not talking 2 generations later ports and remastered.
I was never fully impressed with the output on either PS3 or PS4 after the breadth of games on the PS2.
So I'll need to see some actual numbers before I believe him, b/c I don't believe he knows the numbers 15 or 20 years back.
@Alan_cartridge_ Then it should be $60.
@Ithinkyousuck @Ithinkyousuck Weirdly enough this big cross-gen phase seemingly cemented that 60fps should be the target for games this generation.
Oh crap, Jim Ryan mentions 'generations' again! What catastrophe will follow this I wonder?
Will see...I'll buy a PS5 in a few years when this statement is proven true or false.
Plus just about every 3rd party multi you could hope for.
PlayStation = Games, Games and more Games. PS5 will be no different 👍
@playstation1995 And its not Sony doing it either is the MLB crowd. 🤪
$$$$$ An interesting and successful strategy
@Flaming_Kaiser. No doubt playa.word up son
@get2sammyb
Agree with that. Cross-gen or not on the first party front, I'm much more happy with PS5's first year already than I was PS4's. And third party is better too with new entries of Yakuza and mainline Resident Evil which took a good while to get to PS4.
It may all sound good, but his mention of quietly but steadily investing in "dedicated software", and not ruling out aquisitions "in the future" sounds like what he's currently talking about doesn't involve acquiring new studios. The existing studios doubtfully can work on that much more than one mega-blockbuster at a time, and most of them we know what they're primarily working on, while having a second team work on something is probably not what he means by investing.
The only real logical takeaway here is that he's talking about moneyhatting timed/full exclusivity from 3rd party publishers and/or smaller indie games like Kena and Stray, not really more directly SIE output. Which is fine, but it's a little misleading when they're not producing more software, they're just tying up contracts on software that otherwise might have gone to more platforms.
@DrClayman They should rework Destruction All Stars into a PS mascot deathmatch brawler-type game. I haven't touched that game since day one.
@4kgk2 to each there own, but an open world economy is a better economy overall. At the very least do timed exclusives then open to other platforms could still work too.
@Ithinkyousuck I don't own a switch, but I would love to play those games. 😊 Better if all could play.
@playstation1995 THIS. Let Bluepoint try creating their own IP and give Housemarque the budget to BRING BACK ARCADE. FromSoft would be nice but they are probably doing pretty good on their own, although a sizeable cash injection to start development on an Armored Core follow up would be nice.
Now that's what I want to hear! Just make sure they are "real" exclusives and not "console" exclusives.
@arsmolinarc. If from software became a sony it would be game over for anyone.i mean i believe returnal will get really goid revies and i believe bluepoint and housemarque will be sony new aquisition.word up son
@nomither6 No we won’t be firing Ryan mate. Sorry. Done to death.
@NEStalgia They might have been paying studios of promise to make games for them?
@Ithinkyousuck
I agree. I got my PS4 in early 2014 shortly after launch and the first two years were very slim for must have games. I mostly played third party titles and was still rocking my PS3 back log at the time.
The PS4 started hitting its stride in 2016 and blew up in the amount of quality games, IMO, in 2017. Almost four years after launch.
@TheRedComet it's why their slogan was : "GREATNESS AWAITS"
@Ashina I really felt that variety is there with games like gravity rush, guilty gear, persona, dreams, resogun, wipeout etc etc
@Ithinkyousuck
I know I'm in the vast minority here at PushSquare but I don't despise MS as a publisher and given its history with Remedy, that'd be one studio that if MS did acquire it, I think it makes sense. With Platinum, I'd prefer to see Nintendo get it. Ideally, however, if these studios did need to be bought, a multiplat third party, not named Tencent, EA or Activision, would get them.
@Gamer83 I think platinum needs to be acquired by square enix. The problem with Nintendo acquiring anything, is that they are limited to the games they can make due to weak console.
SquareEnix or Sega. I'd be fine with either getting Platinum.
I'm making progress in grammar everyday thanks to the Internet.Last week it was fire Jim everywhere and now I just realised it meant Jim is fire 🔥
👍
@wiiware
Narratives have often blurry origins.
That 'we believe in generation's quote was a direct answer to a journalist question specifically asking if PlayStation was planning to do the same thing as xbox, I.e. build every game in making sure they work for base xbox 1.
He NEVER meant ALL PlayStation games will be only new gen. Every generation there are cross gen titles admittedly this one more than previous one because the hardware being BC and easier to work with.
Just don't jump on narratives is just what I'm saying.
Edit
So in this case here we have a translation which is sometimes not completely accurate so I m not completely sure he meant PS5 or PlayStation exclusives.
Probably both.
@JJ2 I believe he's a bit misleading the answer, he's not saying 100% ps exclusive will be ps5 only, but by saying we believe in generations gamers will think all of the big AAA games will be ps5 exclusive. I don't have problems with miles morales on ps4 since it's like lost legacy, but I think horizon forward west still on ps4 is a mistake, and why god of war is still unclear whether it's on ps5 only or not? It should be a true ps5 games.
@Agramonte except for the range of ability to actually play all those games. ¯(ツ)/¯
@torne that fake news Sony is abandoning the japanese console market, please stop spreading fake news.
Sony should buy Square Enix/Capcom to strengh it IP and PS4/PS5 portfolio.
@playstation1995 Square Enix/Capcom would strengh the PlayStation brand immensely, imagine Monster Hunter, Resident Evil and Mega Men 3 amazing franchises that Sony now could use/release exclusively on PS4/PS5.
@wiiware
Hi sorry. Having busy day. Oh I agree I prefer full on new gen. I'm just saying the context and he gave the right answer. As opposed to xbox mandating first party to support base consoles. Idk its just the truth.
Edit
The real quote:
'We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.
"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5."
His response was more about the hardware
@Giancarlothomaz. Definitely i agree.word up son
@JJ2 Yeah, in the end playstation way is still better than xbox since we're getting not only graphics and framerate upgrade, but haptics feedback and games that natively designed for ps5 ssd. Oh well, can't wait for returnal, ratchet, and others ps5 exclusive games 😃
most of the announced exclusivities are NOT exclusive
perhaps we should remind to Sony that a game that releases on PS5 and PC are NOT exclusivities
also 6 months exclusivity is still not exclusivity
but I'm guessing being able to use proper words of its native
it seems lying is the only thing Sony can still rely on to sell consoles and games
