We're less than one month away from the PlayStation 5 launch of Returnal now, which means the full marketing cycle is really starting to kick into gear. This latest trailer comes courtesy of the PlayStation Japan YouTube channel and it's all about breaking the loop. This is a rogue-lite experience at the very least, after all. We happen to think this latest slice of footage is one of the game's best trailers yet — it spends plenty of time focusing on both the story and gameplay.
Of course, Returnal recently went gold, which means that release date of 30th April 2021 is locked in and ain't budging. That is unless you're Cyberpunk 2077, obviously. There aren't a whole lot of new clips to discuss in this trailer despite how good it makes the fast-paced experience look, so sign off in the comments below to tell us whether you've already pre-ordered or not.

Please be good. £70 is a lot to ask for a game. I hope it lives up to expectations.
It's definitely the best trailer since the initial announcement. However, I'm still noticing framerate hitches, which makes me worried....
Man, I am torn on this game.
Like, parts of it really look like it's up my alley - cool enemies, trippy story, dark atmosphere.
But then there are parts I am not particular a fan of, particularly the bullet-hell shmup aspects.
It's like the company wanted to make this dark horror adventure style game, but had a reputation to maintain with the arcade style action.
It looks fantastic ,but I need to know how much value the game has for 70 quid, how linear is it ? Any side missions ?,how long is the story ? I just feel it would've flew off the shelves at 39.99
@GamingFan4Lyf Those bullet-hell segments turn me off too. I went through a similar thought process as this... I hope it's not what it looks like! It sort of takes me out of the moment when I see that bullet-hell stuff. It feels exactly that: arcadey.
@MrChips Totally agree. $75 (including tax) is brutal. I'll need to pick and chose my games more carefully now.
It looks interesting but between this and Re8 I choose Re8, I’ll get this one when it gets more affordable
this looks great & has HM style all over it! roll-on launch day.
I'm still unsure of the rogue-lite aspect of it but it does look great. If they've managed to engineer it so that it doesn't feel a chore to redo bits over and over then I will definitely be up for trying it.
Putting my faith in Housemarque and have pre-ordered. Everything looks and sounds good, just hope the whole package comes together.
Game looks great. I love that Housemarque are adapting their signature gameplay and ethos for a major release. Whenever I get a PS5 this is the first game I'm firing up.
I'm kind of tiring of rogue-lites but I think the format makes sense for Housemarque's jump. Cannot wait to play this.
@ChromaticDracula I am hoping it's more like something like Nier Automata - where some enemies do the whole bullet-hell thing, but not entirely "arcadey".
I am just getting into Nier on Xbox (Series X runs the game like a dream), but I am really liking what I am playing - despite some bullet-hell enemies existing. It's still early for me though (maybe about 2 hours in).
The gaming industry needs to rethink their approach to pricing, particularly on consoles where Publishers seem to think that the base price for any console game is $60 USD ($70 USD now). I hope Returnal is not hit by the price point because at this point it seems to be the only negative point. I'm cheering on Housemarque with this one.
@GamingFan4Lyf oh you’re in for one hell of a ride!
@velio84 Tentacles and staircases everywhere!
As they'd say in Gladiator "i will see this game again..... But not yet"
Housemarque games are mindless fun, pre-ordered and can't wait.
@GamingFan4Lyf Oh yeah! I forgot I had Nier. I myself also just got that because it was finally cheap enough for me
I got a tad annoyed though.. I played through until I met the other character after that first big boss. I died shortly after and for whatever reason it started me back at the very beginning of the game; it never saved any progress from that (hour?) of gameplay I did. It never explained to me how saving works and I still don't know what I did wrong (admittedly, I never search online about it either). I haven't gone back to it since that first play through about 2 months ago. I will eventually but that really ticked me off and put a bad taste in my mouth. But yeah, they kinda did the bullet-hell thing in a tasteful way. That wouldn't bother me much if Returnal was like that too — very good point/example!
@MrChips yes 70 is a lot to ask, but why is everyone complaining about this game but when talking about, for instance, Ratchet and Clank, no one says anything?
@ChromaticDracula You can't save until after that Prologue Boss Fight (I know, it sucks).
Afterwards, it's kind of lengthy to explain. At HQ, you can save. Outside of HQ, there are access points in the area you use to reveal map information around the radius of the access point that you can use to save. Additionally, when you are in this "revealed" radius (the map is brighter in those areas), you save out in the field.
It's...interesting as it's a combination of "save points" and "save anywhere". Plus I think it has checkpoint saves as well (post prologue).
I find it endlessly amusing that the comments under EVERY article for this game turn into a discussion about the price. Maybe not a good sign.
@AFCC Presumably people think such a premium price makes more sense for prominent first-party efforts than for this comparatively obscure rougelike/shooter mashup?
@AFCC Everyone knows what to expect with Ratchet and Clank, its a long running popular franchise, and made by a popular developer. Now Returnal, is a new franchise and have unproven developers. Enough said.
Someone call the wambulance for all the haters out there saying this costs to much... wahhhh!!!... can't wait for this one! It's going to be one hell of a ride!
@DragonSlayer1759 Housemarque aren't unproven. WTF
@DragonSlayer1759 I wouldn't called Housemarque unproven. Their games are absolute bangers - just none of them was like this before.
I haven’t watched the last couple trailers. I don’t need to see any more of the game personally. I’m sold. My body is ready.
I think this is the first 60 FPS trailer, that is the one that has some 60 FPS gameplay sequences.
Will be waiting for your review guys before buying.
If it reviews well I’ll get it. I don’t care that it’s a tired point, but I can’t preorder at that price unless I’m really sure. Hope it’s good though.
I have my eye on this game for when I get a ps5, looks great. Although I can't see myself paying £70 for many games if it becomes the standard for new AAA games, however I'm getting a little tired of hearing people complain about it. Either but a game you want at launch of wait for a price cut 🤷♂️
Might just wait for a PS Plus collection 2.
I have already pre-ordered it.
@Rash you gonna be waiting a long time broke dude.
Just not feeling this one. Especially at the Australian price of $125!
There is a good chance that Sony will release Returnal on PC. I'll probably wait for this game on Epic/Steam or wait till I get a PS5 and buy it for a cheaper price.
I love seeing new good IP’s.
I don’t mind sequels to my favorite franchises, but I’m excited for AAA quality games that try something new to counteract the likes of Far Cry 25, the umteenth Assassin’s Creed game, and yes - even the like 12th Ratchet & Clank game. Heck, we apparently have 4 Zombie Army games, I found out today. 😂. Not sure we actually need all those.. but I guess someone is buying them. I don’t mind recycling franchises, but long live new properties and innovation!
@DragonSlayer1759 These developers are not unproven and the game looks fantastic. They are masters in gameplay.
Thats why we dont have a Japanstudio any more at Sony. We want a Ubisoft style game i guess copy and paste with no innovation.
Same goes for Hollywood boring every time the actors because they only want the same names.
And the gimmick with black actors is there because of the wrong reasons.
If you cast more out of the comfortzone you will get a waymore diverse cast anyway. Look at English series they arent stuck on big names thats why they are more fun too watch.
@Th3solution Its such a pity people start with its a new IP it should be cheap. I would rather say its another copy and paste AC or COD, FIFA it should be cheap. Innovation should be celebrated not condemned.
@kyleforrester87 Thats the first solid response thing i read.
@Ralizah I mean, if we're talking about genres and not quality, then I much prefer a roguelike/shooter mashup than just another WW2 FPS like next COD or some other same old FPS game. If the game has quality like any other triple A game why not have the same price?
@DragonSlayer1759 Unproven developers? You don't know Housemarque? lol
This game could be brilliant but it will suffer because of price , when microsoft double the price of xbox live they were quick to backdown after the public outcry , hopefully Sony does the same 70 is a stupid price for a game . Most people will wait to get this on sale
@rumple1980 i have hundreds of PS4 games . I havent bought a single PS5 i can afford 70 for a new game thats not the point , 70 for a game is an absolute joke its more about the principal of it Sony trying to milk the life out of the fans
I really want to buy this at launch to support the developers, but money is gonna be super tight for awhile.
Hope the game is successful enough for Housemarque to pump out another AAA experience.
@4kgk2 Broke dude? Definitely got that wrong. I'm just saying this can be a game that can wait and PlayStation has been quite generous. Look at Days Gone. Should have waited a long time for that and that came to the collection within a year.
@DragonSlayer1759 “Unproven developers” he says lmao. Shows how much you know.
@Lordkirkis
They are hardly a Naughty Dog. Yes they may have done a few decent smaller games, but they have yet to prove themselves in the triple A market. I hope they do pull it off, because if they dont it could destroy them
@DragonSlayer1759 Housemarque will do fine here. They are an exceptionally talented team. If Returnal’s initial sales don’t reflect it, I expect it to show improvement via word of mouth into its first or second month from launch.
