And just like that, we now know the actors who will play Joel and Ellie in HBO's TV adaptation of The Last of Us. Earlier today, it was confirmed that Bella Ramsey is Ellie. As for Joel? Well, it's The Mandalorian himself: Pedro Pascal.
Pascal is also well known for his role as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, so he and Ramsey (also a Games of Thrones star) should know each other well enough. This casting confirmation also puts to bed rumours that True Detective actor Mahershala Ali had landed the part of Joel.
Now that we know who the show's two leads are, do you have high hopes for The Last of Us? Listen for clickers in the comments section below.

I called this 👌
Think he’s a great fit.
Man, that dude is on a roll right now.
That man must be tired from carrying Wonder Woman 1984 on his entire back
Great bit of casting, he’ll absolutely prove that you don’t need to be the same race as the original character to portray them effectively just like Mahershala Ali would have done.
@nessisonett Honestly I would've been down with Ali as well but he's probably too strapped for time to shove zombie hunting in between his vampire hunting schedule anyway
Neat. I'm actually digging this outside-the-box casting.
I approve of that casting. He just needs to use his Mando voice with a Southern drawl and he's all set.
This is the Way.
@TheFrenchiestFry I’m firmly in the ‘cast Mahershala Ali as every role’ camp as he’s acted every other actor off the screen in every movie or TV show I’ve seen him in. Pedro Pascal’s also great though and despite worrying that he’s being set up to fail with this show as the fans will hate it regardless, I think he’ll give it a good go.
Yep I'll take that.
I do like Pascal but I had hoped they would have cast Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, or better known as Jamie Lanister. Just look at him in the movie The Silencing, I mean, he is basically playing Joel in that movie. He would have also been a dead ringer for him.
Hopefully the makeup person will have a marker handy to fill in his too-sparse facial hair.
Really intrigued by this casting. I used to be a proponent of having an actor look as close as possible to a character, but then Netflix's Iron Fist happened. All that really matters is the quality of the acting and Pascal has got that covered.
P.S. Lewis Tan should have been Danny Rand
Good choice, pedro pascal is a great actor 😃
I’m sure he will be great. However, for better or worse, I’ll now always think how things could have been with Dylan McDermott...
It was either him or Gerard Butler/Hugh Jackman. All are great actors!
This will effectively be another Mandalorian season with a different looking baby Yoda.
I can't believe they overlooked Warwick Davis for the role. The casting is clearly prejudiced.
@Hyperluminal He can still play Tess.
@Zuljaras
Gerard Butler is a great actor? Maybe my wife has dragged me to all the wrong Gerard Butler movies?
@RPE83 To each their own I guess.
@Wormold nearly but not quite. Right at the start the TV executives got together to discuss making a brand new show specifically to annoy a tiny minority of people communicating on internet threads enough for those people to post a disparaging, sweeping generalisation online over the relevancy of the project. They chose TLoU as the show's premise because they knew there'd definitely be that kind of person within the demographic of people who like the game enough to say something like that 😆
The casting for both roles seems pretty great to me. Very interested to see the end result.
He asked to borrow my phone outside a pub in Soho once! Can't believe I declined Mando/Joel... If only I knew he would become this big xD
Good casting, but if you have seen Hugh Jackman in Prisoners (especially one scene with Paul Dano in a bathroom)... He is the literal embodiment of Joel!
I thought they may have also gone with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister).
@Zuljaras
It was more a joke. He "lacks range", oddly my wife doesn't seem to mind.
@Perryg92 why wouldn't you let him borrow your phone?
OH F*** YES! This guy is GREAT and I love The Mandalorian! Can't wait for this show now!
@RPE83 Well Joel is in his range if you ask me
Hugh Jackman is probably better suited for the role.
But yes, his roles are oddly similar except for Law Abiding Citizen.
Oh yeah I remember this guy. I'm not seeing Joel but whatever.
@Hyperluminal This was well before he became a mainstream celebrity. but that doesn't matter... it was because he was a total stranger to me who jumped out asking for my phone and I was heading off somewhere. In central London you don't usually hand over stuff to total strangers. It's in our cynical etiquette
Good choice for Joel I think, not too sure about Ellie's actor though, but still looking forward for this TV series should be great.
@nessisonett I think Pedro is considered caucasian, but besides that, I hope he can grow a decent beard in time and they don't have to roll out the fake fluff
@Perryg92 I live in London and worked in Soho. People are generally friendly there, its like a little village.
@nessisonett Im sorry he looks quite caucasian if they would have cast a totally different character i would not have liked it one bit. You dont have too change it just for the sake of it like with some movies. If you try too make a series out of existing thing otherwise just make something original.
Man... I was holding out for John C. Reilly...
For your plague!
The beard merkin budget on this show is going to be insane.
@Playstation I reckon they will swerve the Abby issue - at least for Series 1. I think this will stay closer to the first game. Be interesting to see who they cast as Tess though as she is pretty integral. And of course Tommy!
@Playstation the show is based on the first game.
He just keeps getting roles after roles and yeah i'm all for that as he's a great actor.
Both Ellie and Joel are not at all what I was expecting. I’m skeptic at this point. Her role in GoT was too small for me to get a good opinion but I’ve seen enough of him now. I thought he was fine in Mandalorian ans GoT but his character in WW84 was horrific. They should have cut that completely out of the film and left it just Cheetah, she was the star.
Very nice casting. Especially Ellie, as the actress looks suitably child-like and not - in the nicest way possible - typically attractive, which is important.
I hope we see Riley in some form too. Maybe flashbacks?
Their characters never met on Thrones though!
I prefer talent of said actor over looking like a fictitious video game character. Seems so many people are hooked on looks of actors vs. characters rather than the incredible talents they can bring to the role.
@nessisonett lol when they make a Shaft movie and cast Tom Hardy, ill agree with you.
@Playstation well thats inevitable. The story naturally has to progress beyond the first game.
The point is that this show isn't set during a time period that we have no knowledge of or hasn't been covered in the games.
@starbuck2212 bad example. Shaft is a symbol of black empowerment in a society that is prejudiced against his race. You can't ever possible cast a white man to play that role. There's no reason Joel can't be black apart from he wasn't written that way so I could upset fans who would see it as being woke. If Idris Alba ended up being Joel, or James Bond for that matter I'd be fine with that. I think the Marheshala looks too old for the part and doesn't make sense.
**** just got real. I absolutely love this actor and everything I’ve watched him be in. This series will be guaranteed brilliant for me just because he’s in it.
I don’t do man crushes, but if I did he’d be high up that list!! (Along with Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba - but I don’t do man crushes obviously!)
@velio84 if Gerard Butler is in a film you just know it's gonna be utter crap.
@Hyperluminal no way Idris could play Bond. Bond comes from an upper class Downton Abbey type family. No Black man in the world comes from that background. So for the same reasons you say a white man can't be Shaft a black man can't be Bond.
@starbuck2212 ....there are plenty upper class Brits who are of mixed race descent. It’s not the 1950s anymore. I don’t think you realise that you sound incredibly racist by attempting to say that a black man couldn’t be Bond because black people aren’t rich enough.
Nothing to do with wealth. Its heritage, no black man in the world comes from that background. Fact.
@starbuck2212 David Oyelowo is literally a minted British upper class black man. He’s a bona-fide prince. He could play Bond no bother.
I’m not familiar with Mr. Pascal but I trust the show runners know what they’re doing. Typical at this point, but I’ve always thought Hugh Jackman would make a great Joel. I’m excited to see how this turns out!
@nessisonett its not about being posh. Its about heritage. And David Oyelowo's parents are both from Nigeria. Its not possible for him to come from an upper crust English family. Period.
At leats one good news.pedro is right choice.but ellies? Hum sorry maybe another and a good director choose better
I think Hugh Jackman would have been awesome for the Joel role
This man Pedro has been putting in work! I’m looking forward to this.
