Returnal is, despite its big-budget production values, effectively a roguelite – and that means it relies on lightning fast loading times to get you back into the action as quickly as possible. Of course, rapid loading is one of the PlayStation 5’s flagship features, and so it should come as no surprise that the title will be leveraging the system’s SSD to get you back into the thick of things with minimal delay.
As a first-party release, you can also rely on the title using the DualSense controller to its fullest. The adaptive triggers are being used to allow you to “feel” your way through different firing modes, which should help to keep your focus on the frenetic action unfolding on screen. Tidbits, then, but we’re sure we’ll learn more in the lead up to launch on 19th March.

I bet you'll repawn before even dying on PS6.
Instant respawns? I'm holding Naughty Dog's beer. Still, it's great more games are getting up to speed, literally.
Still curious about how the rogue-lite systems will play out... Do you have to RETURN—ALL of your items after you die? Ehhhhh??!?!
A bit unrelated but can anyone here tell me how the loading is like for Demon's Souls on PS5? Bloodborne and Sekiro's loading times soured the game for me somewhat. If the loading is quick I'd definitely give the Demons Souls remake a try.
Back on topic fast loading is always good. Especially with difficult games. Roguelites tend to be tricky so this is good here.
@pip_muzz basically instant, there’s a fog and then boom you’re back
@pip_muzz Loading between deaths in Demon's Souls Remake is literally around less than 5 seconds. I grinded for items in a particular area for three hours, and the constant reloading was always lightning fast. It's a really game-changing quality of life thing for that kind of game.
It's the complete opposite of Bloodborne's load times. Can't speak for Sekiro though since I played that on PC.
@Ear_wiG I imagine it will work something like Hades or Dead Cells where you unlock certain starting items, and ability-stacking like Risk of Rain and Binding of Isaac. I'm actually looking forward to getting this, pending reviews of course, but it's Housemarque so I'm thinking it's going to be a solid 8 at least. Imagine if its as good a Hades but with the "AAA production values coating" on top.
@pip_muzz there is a way to reduce loading screens in bb and sekiro...
Get gud
Welcome to dark souls community.
Issue for this game remains that i preordered Resident Evil Village for 49 pounds today. Cheapest i've seen Returnal for is 63, and i am just not feeling the value proposition in the same way. I'm i interested, but definitely after a discount
@arsmolinarc Cheers! I’ve only played Dead Cells out of all the games you listed, but LOVED it. Waiting patiently for Hades to drop on PlayStation, sounds like it’s a fantastic game! Trying to leave some surprises for Returnal, but can’t help being curious...
I loved every housemarque game but 80 Euros for a roguelite is a hard sell for me. If the reviews won't say BUY ME I might wait for a sale.
Titbits mate. We're not puritanical about it here in the UK 😄
I love roguelikes, especially BoI, Hades, RoR2 and ToME but they were all £15 or less. Not £70.
@LiterallyDoNotCare Ok... but we still have to use the fast travel system....
@tameshiyaku seems to me it normal round here. Quantity over quality is the name of the day.
@Nepp67 its been rechristened the very fast travel system on PS5
@Rob_230 exact same feeling on this.
Firstly they need to respawn a few more consoles for sale, which will help with games sales etc.
@nessisonett So this will probably be the most expensive roguelikes game ever. Sony is really setting it up to underperform and that's assuming stores will soon have aisle's packed with PS5s.
@pip_muzz to add to what the others have said the longest load I had was around 10 seconds and that was doing invasions so also included host connection.
It is transformative in how close to instant it is, literally faster than taking a sip of coffee.
@Rob_230 pretty much this. I pre-ordered RE Village for £46 and as you say this can be found for £63 at the cheapest. I just can't see how Sony can carry on with this pricing and expect their games to sell well on release. I mean, seriously, what planet are they on? The more I think about it the more crazy or seems to charge that much for a video game.
@Old-Red I disagree. A lot of games for ages now have been priced at this point.
A lot of games that come out annually are priced even more with special editions and other descriptions with pointless extra stuff like xp boosters early access to game content maybe a free soundtrack.
Also I have stated before that I belive this is not greed but an effort on sonys part to recoup losses and the fact that they are selling the ps5 at a loss. It's the equivalent of a pc with a lot of ram a super fast ssd and a 2080 and a top teir sound card.
Even today you couldn't build that for £450 and Microsoft are in the same boat with the series X which is why I believe that the recent attempt to double their pass price is because they need to recoup their own losses and don't have the luxury of a specific series X exclusive game as all are designed to play across all systems and are priced accordingly.
I think at seventy quid this if it's good will be worth it. Just because it's a rogue lite it shouldn't be priced like demonsouls is stupid opinion as I've clocked up more hours on these games than a lot of single player games like got or the tlou2.
@darksoul77 you might be right, but I simply do not believe that Sony hasn't made a huge profit from selling 100m+ ps4s and millions of copies of games at £40-45. I also think that the pricing is quite a gamble as I don't think they'll make more money but less from sales as fewer people will buy any of the games at that price.
Throwing around the term 'big-budget production' is silly too without knowing how much the game cost to make. It would take a lot to convince me that this isn't an attempt to blanket raise the prices for extra profit. Luckily I can't see them getting away with it for too long after most of the games flop and everyone else continues to release games at a reasonable price like Capcom with Resi Village.
Had they just gone for a slight raise in price here in the UK of £45-50 to £55-60 it might have been acceptable, but a £25 hike is taking the pi$$.
@nessisonett I'm interested to know the full names of those abbreviated titles. Pretty please?
Binding of Isaac, Hades, Risk of Rain 2 and Tales of Maj’Eyal! All totally different takes on the rogue-like formula but all great in their own right.
would like to give it a try, but not at £70, or even the £62 that's the cheapest i've seen it so far. i'm not doubting its production values, but housemarque is a fairly small team, and i just don't see it having a substantial amount of content.
@Old-Red - RRP of (most) games in the UK is £60 — the difference in RRP is £10, not £25... my guess is that retailers at present are reluctant to bulk order the kind of quantity they need on next-gen games to get the same kind of retail discounts that eventually appeared for PS4.. while it's common to find £60 games retail at somewhere around the £50 (or a bit less), it'll be a while before we see similar reductions for PS5 games, due to the limited number of consoles out there.
@leucocyte You can prove anything with facts, Haha. I get it and you're right about the £60 RRP (even though I don't think I've ever seen a game at that price barring digital), but it doesn't change the fact that £70 is a crazy amount to charge for a video game. I only comment on here to add to the dissatisfied voice in regard to the price hike in vain hope that Sony will be forced to reign in the price eventually. I know it's a losing battle and most will just give in and accept it, but if enough people act negatively towards business practices things can change as we've seen in some cases recently. Not many, but some.
I was interested in Returnal, until I found out it was a mixture of bullet hell and roguelike rolled up into a 3rd person shooter.
I'll still give it a rent, who knows, maybe I'll enjoy it and end up buying it. If not, oh well, it's not for me.
Either way, I hope it does well and others enjoy it.
@TheArt........ Year Naughty Dog have really spoiled us with how they design their games around loading times. I mean once their games loads from the initial load up screen then there really aren't load times on the games, they almost instantly respan
@nessisonett...... Because Sony are not indies that's is they are the current boss of the entire gaming market.
So the game will be fantastic, so why price a game $15 when it is still going to drop in price anyway, buy the time this game gets to the rogue like price point it will feel like it's a sell there driving more its sales.
You have to give it to Sony, They Know the Game and are masters at playing it. That's why they are the current Kings of Gaming.
@Old-Red......... But it's a strategy to make us buy more games.
We're do you think they took the decision from to price hike. They have the numbers.
So the DAY1 buyers i.e all the 13 millions who bought the broken CP2077 are the ones who will take the initial $70/€70, then there will be the "I will only buy it when it around $40-55/€40-55" that's who the first price drop will for, after you have the Deluxe and GOTY editions buyers, the sale buyers and lastly the bargain bin buyers.
So why would they low price games when they have so many different economic status buyers to go through.
Whether you buy it at 70 or 5 dollars, fact is you eventually bought the game.
The game only needs critical acclaim, it just needs to review well.
I mean The last of Us took 7 years to reach 20 million, and it reached that going through the different economic level buyers, heck i picked it up at it at its bargain bin price.
@GREGORIAN that's probably their thinking, yes, but I probably won't bother with the games until they're much cheaper than I would have bought them new for £45-50. By the time I've waited 6 odd months I will be so over any hype I'll just wait to get them for £10-20 down the line and second hand too. Anyway, I get it, they will probably get away with it and people will just pay the extra money. I think there's a chance the UK/EU prices will be reconsidered though as the mark-up really doesn't match the US increase.
