The base version of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is no longer available for purchase across digital PlayStation storefronts following this week's release of the special edition. The same goes for the PC version over on Steam, where the listing now states: "This version of DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Digital Edition of Light is no longer available. Please see the new DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition." This has happened at the request of the publisher — Square Enix in this case — and so we can assume the situation is the same for the base PS4 version.
A quick search of both the EU PlayStation Store and US counterpart only ever brings up Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age and never the original version alongside it. While the special edition does indeed expand on the base game with more content, this is not a Persona 5 Royal situation. Square Enix has essentially upressed the Nintendo Switch port of Dragon Quest XI, meaning its visuals are actually inferior in some places. There's no dramatic difference or anything, but it is one reason why someone may want to purchase the base game over the special edition. That appears to be no longer possible digitally, so a physical copy will be the way to go now. Those who already own the game should still be able to download the original game without issue.

Oh wow, that sucks.
The difference in visual presentation alone is reason to leave the base game up. Even if DQXIS is overall the superior version, people who want to opt for better graphics should have that choice.
Low blow from Square Enix. Without warning...
If people want the original version now it's probably best you find a physical copy as soon as possible because there's a chance they will go up in price in the used game market due to it's rarity.
That's disappointing for the people that would want the original game.
A bit much isn’t it. Especially seeing as they’ve downgraded the graphics.
Wait what? Why? Atlus has the right idea with P5 and P5R so...?
Not fabulous, darling.
I was planning on getting the S version anyway whenever I finally get this game, but delisting games like this sucks. They should have left it there for those that wanted to get it.
Game been out for years now. Anyone that cared that much about graphics could had bought the digital version by now, and still can buy the physycal version.
In this situation, having access to buy both and accidentally buying the wrong vetrion is the greatest evil. I think it's better this way.
@Tharsman yeah, I just wish they found a softer way to do this. Like give advance warning? I think the vast majority of potential owners will want the new version. But a small percent of a large population is still a lot of people.
I'm really peeved at Square Enix & EB Games at the moment regarding Dragon Quest 11 S on PS4. I preordered it and payed it all off in full, but the day before it was set to release, it suddenly vanished from the EB Games website, and when I called up EB Games about this, Dragon Quest 11 S on PS4 was nowhere within the system, only explanation I got was 'That the physical release must've been cancelled' a last minute cancellation??? Just to clarify I live in Australia, so I checked online and Dragon Quest 11 S on PS4 was available physically in the UK & US, so I don't know what the hell is going on.
I can still buy it digitally though, but considering I prefer physically owning my games, this really irritates me.
Dragon Quest 11 is that surprise JRPG gem of this gen for me, last gen it was Ni No Kuni.
This is why an all digital future is a bad idea. Even if it seems like a weird thing to get it, the option should always be there.
Well, at least now I don't need to choose which version to buy. Already download the demo, will play it sometime this weeks
I'm guessing its for the sake of trying to avoid confusion/mistake purchases, but yeah, this decision is a bit iffy between the inferior graphics and gameplay chances. As long as there is still a tiny merit in the original over the new edition, the option for both should still exist.
@Jaz007 - Totally agreed, LEGO Lord of the Rings, Telltale's Minecraft Story Mode, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 etc. no longer available for digital purchase due to Licensing BS, thankfully I own all these games physically, but the fact you can't buy these games digitally anymore just shows why an all-digital future is far from a good idea.
@Expa0 - I would agree with the notion that it's to avoid confusion/mistake purchases, but plenty of games do the standard base version and then later a definitive version, and don't seem to have this issue, hell people didn't seem to make confused/mistake purchases for Persona 5 & Persona 5 Royal.
Plus most people who do buy the game digitally already know to look for the one that says 'Definitive Edition', I'm sure.
Putting my PS4 disc on eBay in 3, 2...
I simply don’t understand how jrpg developers can get away with re-releasing their games with (mostly) minor additions and charging (mostly) full price again. With no upgrade path and save transfer this feels very anti-consumer and arrogant to me. Also this being a switch port shows me they put minimal effort into the ps4 version. The blow would be less painful if at least they would have updated the ps4 graphics.
And yet people want a digital only future. Imagine if physical copies no longer existed.
I stopped playing original PS4 version after some 30 hrs, cause i was sick of awful repetitive MIDI soundtrack and terrible EN dubbing. I just couldn't take it anymore that said, i truly cant wait to start DQ again with original JP voiceover and orchestral soundtrack. Demo really made me happy.
this is why physical media still has its place. hate to say it but pc piracy also has its place since it can be a form of preservation when digital platforms permanently remove content. not only that, but you know it is just a matter of time before the modding community creates a TRUE dqxi definitive edition (base ps4/pc version with the "s" content merged together). it's not like s-e didn't already make its money exploitating its fanbase by not offering an upgrade option to base owners of the game. this tactic is ***** to say the least.
@Mordechaj I must be the only one that enjoyed the MIDI soundtrack 'cause it's nostalgic for me lol.
Anyways, SE should have offered a way to upgrade instead of delisting the base version.
They can't have just done this for the people who can't read what the difference is. This is a RPG where you need rudimentary reading skills otherwise you are screwed from the off.
They are stopping possible increased income from people double dipping on both versions.
@Turbodream
I agree with the upgrade options, this is just unnecessary milking.
That seems sleezy lol
Good thing I have it on disc then
I'd assume the only bits with worse graphics are parts that were new to the Switch version and thus aren't in the base game anyway. Everything in the base game should be here, same as before.
@JustPlainLoco LEGO Lord of the Rings was only temporary. It's back up, alongside LEGO The Hobbit.
@Mordechaj I don't know how to break it to you buddy, but the English voice acting is the original version. The original Japanese release had no voice acting and didn't exist until the Switch version was release.
I do agree with you that the MIDI soundtrack leaves much to be desired of.
The S version is absolutely the version to play, fixing the main negative people had about the game, the soundtrack being synthesized and not orchestrated, not to mention all the additional features and bonus content.
Oof. This is the kind of bad decision that makes perfect sense at a corporate level (keeping the original edition around was only drawing attention to the fact that their "definitive edition" had distinct graphical downgrades from it, whether overall superior or not) but is 100% needlessly anti-consumer. Bad move, SE.
@Matroska No, the whole game is downgraded graphics
They should just bundle them both together for the digital version. Just like Super Luckys Tale and New Super Luckys Tale on Xbox. Digitally on the store if you buy the ‘new’ version of Super Luckys Tale you get a copy of the original too. No confusion; and actually adds (a little bit of) value to the purchase for the consumer.
@seari84 I've seen my friend playing it on PC and it's definitely not the same as the Switch version in general, it looked like the original PS4 version. The Switch version looks awful, very low res, blatant detail pop-in on NPCs, and what I saw him playing definitely wasn't like that.
@Bliquid It's the same thing but more expensive and you don't actually own the game. It's a step backwards, not some advancement. We're not comparing going from getting water from a well to having plumbing in your house, we're comparing getting your water from a well to getting water from a well but paying more for it and potentially losing access to the well at some point in the future - and not being able to sell the water you get or give it to a friend.
@Matroska The whole point here is that the PS4 version (hey look, this is a Playstation site! ) of S has slightly worse graphics than the PS4 version of the original release. This isn't debatable, and whether your friend's PC version looks indistinguishable is completely irrelevant. If you put the two PS4 versions side-by-side the difference is small but there.
@Matroska @dskatter the new version has a little less detail but runs at 60fps on Pro, I played both versions and I’d say the new one is more impressive graphically. PC is different since I guess you could get the detail AND the framerate
Thank God for discs. Long live physical media.
@JustPlainLoco Bro, where did you get Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1/2 physical copies? Never seen one in my life.
@Oscarjpc - Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 can be bought on PS2, PS3, Xbox? X360 & Wii? (Not to sure about Xbox & Wii, I know one of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games was on the Wii, not sure if both were or just the one). I owned Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 on PS2 & Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 on PS3, ironically they were both given to me for Xmas, but for whatever stupid reason, I sold them (Or lost them?), but you can still buy them through ebay (Last I checked they were being sold at a reasonable price), I'm thinking of buying Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 on PS3 sometime soon.
@JustPlainLoco Thanks, bro. I was thinking about the PS4 ports which run much better. But you're info is much appreciate it.
