Now this is impressive. YouTuber EdgeRunner Cold has managed to estimate the size of Cyberpunk 2077's map through the magic of some serious detective work. The video above is well worth a watch if you want a full explanation.
The short version is that by taking on-screen coordinates from the game's latest photo mode trailer, EdgeRunner Cold was able to approximate certain locations with a promising degree of accuracy. These locations were then placed over an existing map of Night City (and the surrounding Badlands), and from there, we get a decent idea of how big the open world actually is.
The end result suggests that we have a map that's around twice the size of the open world in Grand Theft Auto V — and around twelve times the size of Velen and Novigrad combined in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. In other words, it's pretty big.
Again, this is some very impressive detective work. Did you think the world of Cyberpunk 2077 would be this large? Take a drive in the comments section below.

Can't wait this game!
So is this GTA 6 in all but name, setting (futuristic), and perspective (first-person)?
Edit: Please ignore this stupid comment
I don't know how I feel about that. I know it's CD Projekt Red but it's worrying me that the game will be Ubisofted where there's a huge open world but the content is lackluster and filled with busy work
I see it's a lot of interacting indoors guess it's why they went with first person, as most 3rd person open worlds are more outdoors. Still, highly anticipating reviews.
I just hope there’s plenty to do that utilises the space. GTA V has a great map but only about 20% has anything to do in it, the rest is just woods and mountains.
12 times the size of Velen and Novigrad almost seems too big.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand nope
@starbuck2212 k
@Nepp67 Considering how Witcher 3 handled side quests i don't see that being the case. No doubt there will be some quests like that but its kind of typical for any RPG, especially early in-game. I just hope that every mission/quest has a few different outcomes based on your choices.
I thought they had previously said the game would be shorter than The Witcher 3, I guess that means quite a bit of travelling around.
@Nepp67 I think showmanship is a big factor in busy work. A lot of quests or missions are always going to be go here and fight against x more or less, but if the story and characters are interesting then it is more of an experience then a task.
What I really want to see is things experienced through your exploration and not just quest givers directing you all the time. I am fine with some busy work as long as it is well dressed, but the value of the game will definitely be graded by your freedom and experience in Night City. Such as random conversations that can lead to events, or the world being dynamic and shaped by your choices.
This is good to hear! I thought the map was supposed to be small. Gta 5 wasn't huge but big enough so twice the size is nice to hear. It also sounds like there will be lots to do from what I hear so we shouldn't hopefully have to worry about it being Ubisofted.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand No. Everyone at CDPR and every person who has played it for reviews have gone out of their way to say its not even close. It may share vague similarites, but thats it.
remember when everyone was kicking off cos it looked small, good times
Just wondering about reviews and embargoes, are you playing the game now for review? Are you even allowed to say you have got the game? Just curious, can't remember the last time hype was so high for a game.
As any good gamer'll tell ya, it's the quality not the quantity of the sandbox that counts. Although if this has both, that's fine too.
What amazes me is that Vice City (from 2002, so it's legally old enough to drink now) is still one of my favourite sandboxes and by modern standards it's tiny. But I find I can remember every inch of it because of how vivid it was and how well utilised, even though I haven't played that game in years.
It has both vertical and horizontal depth,good.I trust this game to have a great vatiety of story driven side content and a world with life,but I am a bit worried about the gameplay,and performance of the game,I guess I will wait for reviews to come in.
@PossibLeigh Yeah, they stressed that it had big interiors, but a smaller outside map. Confusing.
@deathaxe Space is big. Really big.
Definitely one to wait for on ps5 then. Fast traveling load times could be brutal on last gen.
@Nepp67 I literally just signed up to give you my hope, because I read how they said they put a lot of detail in the environment where even if you look in the trash cans, each trash can has trash in it that is relative of the location and world. Have hope!
I don't actually see the part when the video uploader explains how he calculated the map based on those "coordinates".
I thought they said before it was around the same floor area as Witcher 3 but with a lot more verticality
Gta 5 the g.o.a.t.word up son
if true, thats nuts! damn
Don't need game worlds to keep getting bigger and bigger tbh.
In this instance...............size matter's prepare to be amazed in just 5 daze GAMERS.
Let's hope at least this time we won't talk about this game for another 7 years.
I am looking forward to the game but I have bearly read or looked into anything what the game offers as I want to keep things new to me. It can be a good thing that the map size is bigger but if there is nothing to do in a bigger map size then to me it is a negative.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L but it's coming out at the same time as on ps4... :-s
Sounds good to me!
I'm buying this one for PC. I imagine there will be tons of mods to play with.
Not sure how co-ordinates for one game map gives you a comparable scale to a different game map. I'm not convinced this will be accurate. If CD Projekt say it's slightly smaller than the land mass of The Witcher 3 I don't see why they would lie or be wrong.
Edit: Having seen the comments to the video he has made an assumption that the co-ordinates convert 1:1 to a value in metres just because it gives a plausible result. Game engine figures could convert to any random real world distance.
@TeapotBuddha @Uoman @starbuck2212 I get it guys, my comment is s**t.
I hope there's some form of fast travel.
The map size of Night City has literally blown away all my expectations. I was expecting it to be smaller than GTA V, and it turns out it is twice as big.
***** Game of the Year, Cyberpunk 2077 is Game of the Decade!
@HotGoomba___Rebrand No, and I hope neither you or anyone else goes to play this game thinking it is a future GTA, because it is not. It is very different, and I believe who ever is expecting this game to be just like GTA but in the future will be very disappointed.
@Inerthal I was being partly sarcastic making that comment, I didn't actually expect a game similar to GTA.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand sarcasm in this day n age good for you.
@nitsuJ Hopefully Im wrong cause I have it preordered and I've been waiting for a long time for this!
@Jayofmaya Is it like a Tardis lol
I don't agree with this. His theory is good but something doesn't add up. If you zoom into the image of both maps side by side I think it's pretty obvious that we're not looking at 1:1 distances. For example you can fit 4 GTA city blocks into 1 Cyberpunk block, the airport runways are twice the length, the highway interchange in Vinewood is a quarter of the size of the one in C77. I know I haven't played the game and maybe the city blocks are massive and maybe planes in 2077 need longer runways. But I doubt it. Just looking at the different areas on both maps it's seems obvious to me that we're not looking at the same scale maps. I'm buying the game but I'm not going to be surprised when the map is less than half of what this article says.
If anyone wants to view a little driving and walking free roam on PS5, here are a couple of streams I found at 720p (not sure how long they'll last)
https://streamable.com/22uv58 (driving at night)
https://streamable.com/absqfg (walking in day)
My random thoughts? Looks smooth enough and OK, but not blown away at all. The first person movement feels very floaty, and worst of all the population density - seems to be no peds at all visible when driving, and even in day there's only a few. They've put more crowd noise on to make it sound busy, but that just conflicts when there's only a few randoms walking about.
Dunno about this game in this state.
I wouldn't mind a smaller map but at least Night City is interesting to look at unlike achingly boring Liberty City.
Im perfectly fine with the game being fairly small as long as there are loads of interesting characters, well written dialogue and different ways of apporaching quests. And that seems to be the case
@MiREv Hahaha! Alright, you got me there. I'll try to word my sentences better next time Now I want a space DLC for Cyberpunk, though haha
