Key members of Final Fantasy VII Remake's development team have spoken more about its sequel, which is apparently now in full development. "I fully understand the importance of releasing a continuation soon. We want to deliver as quick as possible. We’ve grasped where the level of quality should be this time too," director Tetsuya Nomura tells Famitsu (as translated by Gematsu).
"For the next game, we plan to release something with even greater quality and even more enjoyable than the first game, as quickly as possible," Nomura continues. "When we announce the next game, we hope to also make our future plans clear."
But just how far off is Final Fantasy VII Remake 2 -- or whatever it ends up being called? Going by the team's comments, it's clearly hard to say. "Development on the next game has already begun and we’re hard at work. You’ll be waiting a little while, but please look forward to it," states co-director Naoki Hamaguchi. Your guess is as good as ours.
There are a few more interesting comments dotted throughout the interview. For starters, Nomura had no idea Jessie would be so popular. Roche was apparently going to be featured in a final battle near the end of the game, but the team went against the idea after deciding that he ruined the serious tone. And Hamaguchi says that fan feedback has been heard with regards to classic mode being used on a harder difficulty. Hopefully the sequel will offer more options.

A little while.... so ten years I take it
Back end of 2021 at the earliest, realistically middle to end 2022
I'll be dead before this gets remade, they should have just remade the whole thing in one go
Please be excited.
2022 would be my guess depending on the impact of covid and the shift to next gen. That could push it into 2023.
The big question for me is what the implications are on a theoretical final fantasy 16
It'll be ready when it's ready, there are so many games coming out that by the time it releases i probably won't even realise it. Super excited, can't wait.
I can wait about 2 years before I start to get annoyed, so let's shoot for that.
I should be able to squeeze through about 3 gaps by the time the next part comes out.
Please don't let Sony money hold this one back too.
It took them 5 years to make the first one, which is half as much time as FFXV. Optimistically they could complete the project in the next 5 years, thus proving that...they still can't make a complete FF game in less than 10 years.
I figured it would be a while until the next part, especially since we'll start exploring outside of Midgar.
Well, considering they had to build the systems and assets from scratch for part 1, part 2 should come together quicker.
If they're saying "You'll be waiting a little while" means this game is 4 years away. Mark my words.
@Menchi They didn't hold back the first one either. That's utter nonsense.
I find it hard to get excited, I still haven’t finished the first one because it just feels a bit unfinished. It’s possibly one of the blandest games I’ve played in recent years. Here’s hoping leaving Midgar will give the opportunity to make the game more interesting.
My prediction is the game will launch at 2023, and it will have bigger scope than the first game, it will be open world like ff15.
Please Look Forward To It Eh? I'll Do So When They Narrow Down a Release Date For The Whole Set.
@nessisonett I got to Sector 5 a few days after launch and I've been struggling to play it since. One of my main fears for years with a FF7 Remake was that the dialogue and personalities that suited little chibi characters wouldn't work as well with fully realised and fully voiced characters.
I mean maybe it does work and the issue is me, but I just don't like any of them.
I started it again the other day, then Ghost of Tsushima came out.
Will it come out on ps4?
If not will the remake be optimize for PS5..
@3MonthBeef I never played the remake after hearing that it was being broken up into separate games so I'm expecting the whole package to come out in a decade anyway, so I'm not upset by this because there are many other games coming out before then.
@AdamNovice Considering every single review, including PushSquare's, cited the overwhelming, near constant texture issues due to console hardware limitations, the Sony money held back the best version for a year.
And 30fps.
@3MonthBeef I gave up about 20 hours in as it artificially stretches everything out to the point of tedium. Its very clearly a 6 hour game stretched to 40 hours and I doubt I'll bother with any part 2 unless its very different
@Menchi thats not the fault of the hardware, look at TLOU2, that has none of these issues and is far better visually. FFXV has some low quality details regardless of platform
This is Square Enix we are talking about, so I assume the next episode will be released around 2024 or 2025!
Nobody should be surprised by this. I’ve said it before-but this will be a PS5 game....I’d also expect a part 1 remastered version hitting PS5 a little while before part 2.
Can’t wait. If it builds on the first one we could really be in for something special.
If it comes out on ps5 and not on ps4 then how will it use my save from the first part?
I think people are underestimating how long this wait will be with their predictions.
Sounds like it’ll be a couple of years. At least they’ve already created a lot of assets they can reuse...
My guess is about 3 years time. There's some creative groundwork that'll carry over to the next game, they've decided how the game will work in terms of mechanics and exploration, and Nomura isn't listed as still trying to finish other projects simultaneously.
Dear Square-Enix,
Take all the time you need to make Final Fantasy 7 Remake (Part 2?) an amazing experience. You have won back my faith in your company with FF7R, and I know that along with our patient support, you can make Part 2 even better. We have plenty of games to play in the mean time.
Sincerely,
Take My Money
With the inevitable delay after the first date announcement, probably mid 2023 which is fine by me.
This has been so poorly managed.
Squares little while will mean it will be out at the end of the ps5 life
@carlos82 Can't wait to play the PC version without the console problems
@Menchi you don't listen do you but go back to your PC if thats what you want
Please take your time Square-Enix, I still plan on gaming even when I'm 60+
I'm guessing 2022. Take your time with it.
FFVIIR is the only rehash I broke down and played. Glad I did.
This "re-imagining" is how jRPG should be brought back. I knew the story but still had a few surprised moments. And even if I knew something, the new game play made up for it
I'll check out #2 for sure.
Lol
This being Square-Enix i expect part 2 to be out by 2024-25 and the remake to be complete by 2030
