As is the case with every generation transition, there have been some murmurs that the PlayStation 5’s first batch of games don’t look that much better than their PlayStation 4 predecessors. This early Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart comparison – comparing to the dynamic duo’s previous adventure – begs to differ, as it shows some serious improvements compared to the current-gen game.
Not only are the character models vastly superior, but the environments are much denser and more detailed. Special mention must be reserved for Clank’s metallic exterior, as ray tracing technology means that his surface is much more reflective and realistic. Remember, this title’s running in native 4K, and it gives the series’ 2016 CG movie a run for its money.

Actually this game impressed me the most from the other day, just the way they were leaping from environment to environment so quickly and seamlessly is something that just can't be done on current gen.
I thought Clank looked nice, shiny and chrome.
Ps4 ratchet and clank stills looks amazing.heck even ps3 ratchet and clank is amazing looking game.ps5 ratchet and clank to me was game of the show.impressive.now give me sly cooper 5.word up son
Yeah it looked like a cgi film it was that impressive.
Not being a fan boy but you can spend like 5 grand on a pc and it begs the question why? When it takes the likes of Sony and a supposedly 500 pound console to advance games to the next level!
@Futureshark and the srpinkler weapon... all the flowers on screen et al
Insomniacs Games are amazing, this is the first time sony got 2 games made by the same developer for launch period I think.
The engine they use for these games is insane. The amount of stuff it can have on screen at any one point, with almost zero slowdown is just unparallelled.
50 enemies on screen at once all moving/shooting/taunting, a million bolts all coming to you (with some glowing effects), multiple projectiles (and all their splash damages), laying the trap weapons (often of multiple types at once), Ratchet and his little furry ears bobbing around whilst strafing and traversing the arena, all whilst laying off a groovitron and making the entire screen DANCE to boot and the engine is just like "yeah, ite". Insane.
The visuals are certainly very impressive. I'm a bit more worried about the gameplay, but hopefully that'll be good as well.
What's betting this is just the start from insomniac, Spiderman 2 will 100% utilise this whole dimension gameplay! Miles will lead into Spiderman 2, following the trend from the film.
2016 still looks pretty darn impressive, even in 2020, but Rift Apart looks vastly superior.
@EquiinoxGII I’d like to see a darker venom game next personally. The possibilities with the ps5 and venom are mouthwatering...
It excites us.
@MarcG420 I think it will include venom, why wouldn't it? Obviously Harry is going to be involved somehow, but I think the bigger overall story will involve venom to a degree.
@thefirst yeah completely agree, Spiderman has pushed them forward, and I think they have found what works for them. Sunset was great! Hopefully they can port it across as I think it would sell pretty well, the gameplay was typical insomniac. Good things to come from these guys.
I chuckled to myself during the NBA 2K21 showing because it reminded me of the jump from PS2 to PS3 when it was all about "look at the sweat! It's so shiny!".
@EquiinoxGII no I’m saying I’d like to see a story solely focused on venom. Nothing else.
The loading was impressive, but visually It's not that big of a difference
Ratchet and Clank games have always looked good, regardless of the console generation. The biggest problem with R&C games is slowdown. Every dang game has slowdown issues. It’s great that Clank is shiny, but I’ll take the 2016 graphics in a heartbeat if the slowdown is eliminated.
I love Insomniac games! Oh, how I wish they would change their mind and give us a new Resistance game.
I really hope this game is more in line with previous games like Tools of Destruction, with its small spherical worlds and clever puzzles than the more action heavy later entries.
@Futureshark Surely we shall see him standing to greet us at the Gates of Valhalla
Oh hey look, more articles gushing about graphics and specs! Never seen that on this site before!
@Heavyarms55 What else are they going to talk about for a game we've only seen a trailer for, a game made to show off the PS5? If graphics and specs didn't matter, we'd all still be playing on the NES.
@Heavyarms55 you ok?
@MarcG420 you never know mate! They're planning another Venom movie so they could do dlc if popular. Would be cool
I hope Qwark is in it He is HILARIOUS!!! Man I can't wait to switch on my PS5 and stick in the R&C disc and play it
@Matroska "A game made to show off the PS5" is everything I dislike about this next gen stuff.
I want to know about the game, not the machine running it. This is like saying "this delicious pizza is meant to show off how nice of a restaurant it was that made it!" I don't really care how nice the restaurant is, I want to eat the pizza. Tell me what toppings it has, what side dishes I can order and what the drink menu is.
I want to hear about the games themselves. Of course specs matter, but they should be secondary, if that. What matters are the games. What's the story like? What new mechanics are there? The setting? Gameplay modes? Single player? Co-op?
Naw, all anyone wants to talk about apparently are teraflops and 4K.
@Heavyarms55 The restaurant being good is what'll lead to the pizza being good. You actually think this game would run on, say, a NES? I mean surely it would, right? Specs don't matter after all. The instant jumping between worlds is only possible because of the very fast SSD, and that's a major part of gameplay. Just like Mario 64 was only possible in that gen of consoles, the 3D graphics being an enormous part of the gameplay. And like i said, theyve already shown off a big part of a level, you've seen your gameplay as soon as it was announced.
@Matroska I'm so sick of this argument. No, it would not run on a NES. But there were great games on NES! Games that are still loved to this day! I care about the game. The games are what make the console. Games take advantage of what the console can do. A good game isn't made to show off hardware, it's made to be a good game taking advantage of the hardware available! The focus is on delivering a great experience to the player. Showing off hardware is at best, an afterthought!
I don't buy games to sit back and admire what a console can do. I buy a console because I want to be able to play the games it runs.
And on the top of food, no, the restaurant being nice isn't what makes the food good. I've had some of the most delicious meals I've ever eaten in little hole in the wall places that seat literally 5 people max in buildings older than my parents. The food was good because it was a good recipe made by a talented cook.
Mario 64 is a great game because it was made by talented people taking advantage of the technology available at that time. Computer technology improves over time, that's not surprising or impressive.
It's expected. But you can hand the best tech to a team of amateurs and it means nothing. You can give the best ingredients to a bad cook and he'll still serve you garbage.
