The inevitable has happened: Evo 2020 won't be going ahead this summer due to the ongoing coronavirus situation. The official Evo Twitter account broke the news, adding that all purchased tickets will be refunded.
Evo is the biggest annual fighting game event in the world, and this'll be the first time that the gathering has been cancelled in its 24 year history -- back before it was even called Evo. However, organisers say that an online event is now planned instead, and that more information will be shared soon. Hopefully it all works out, although we can't imagine that putting together an online event with the scope of Evo will be easy.

I want a new Sonic 30th anniversary game titled Sonic Future, with an adventure styled gameplay, multiple playable characters and new characters. But that will include current voice actors, though.
it’s really sad but it’s really the only choice. A lot of people get sick during EVO even under normal circumstances (and this sparked that horrible EVOla virus meme), and it would be unreasonable to hold it this year...but an online fighting game tournament of this size seems like a disaster waiting to happen.
Not surprised! Players fighting each other from opposite sides of the world (from Japan to England to Korea to the United Emirates) in games where a bad connection means disaster, I wonder how this will go? I can only hope that it forces fighting game developers to upgrade the online infrastructure of all their games!
An online edition of Marvel vs Capcom 2 would also be fitting!
Anyway, I'm just happy I got to see the Mortal Kombat championships (Final Kombat) right before the quarantine started...
If sumo can carry on without crowds, why not evo? Online matches...we'll see who cries about lag first.
Not surprised at all. I wonder how this online tournament is gonna go down. Can you imagine watching a laggy match?
One of the Cannon brothers (Evo founders, along with Wiz I think) has posted on Twitter:
"The intent is not at all to port a traditional Evo to online and pretend it's the same. It's going to be a different kind of event. Eager to share more...we just need to button up some loose ends."
Seems sensible, hope it's a fun event come what may. He's ProtomCannon on Twitter.
@scottdevine48 wtf does that have to do with evo?
I was boycotting EVO after the decision to drop MK11 from the main show. No positive feelings here toward EVO.
