In the short time since Microsoft's Inside Xbox third-party digital event, both the team in green and Ubisoft have been heavily criticized for their use of the word "gameplay". The Xbox Series X manufacturer promised that it would debut footage of Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and while it technically did, what we got didn't live up to even our tempered expectations. The 71-second trailer featured vague shots of the game and cutscenes that most likely don't represent the final product.
It was a major disappointment, but at least the cross-gen title's creative director has quickly sought to temper the flames. Ashraf Ismail took to Twitter to promise that "in-depth gameplay" and lots more information is coming.

When that proper look at gameplay will arrive we still don't know, with Ubisoft yet to confirm a digital showcase of its own at the time of writing. Until then, we'll have to make do with Assassin's Creed Valhalla's all too brief reveal from earlier today. If anything, this has to be a lesson to developers to properly describe what you're about to show fans. For better or worse, the gaming community can cut through the crap at a record pace.
How do you feel about Assassin's Creed Valhalla's gameplay reveal? Were you expecting more? Let us know in the comments below.

Who knows, maybe the game plays like Dragon‘s Lair and that really was actual gameplay?
Good that they acknowledged it and there’s no need for people to get out their pitchforks, but yes... This clearly wasn’t really what I or anyone else expected.
I’m sure we’ll see more soon.
I'm in no hurry to see more.
Not that I'm not interested, this is actually the most interested I've been in an AC game since 2015.
Just, y'know, what's the rush? Plenty of games are vying for attention right now, why add to the pile?
AC Valhalla:
step 1 - Run game
step 2 - Customize character
step 3 - Equip Altair or Ezio outfit
step 4 - Shave and haircut
step 5 - Sell axes, buy hidden blades
step 6 - ready to enjoy game 😉👍
Either way I’m hyped for the game. As much as people hate on AC, there’s no other game series out that does what it does.
@itshoggie Watch Dogs, Ghost Recon, The Division, Far Cry
Thanks for clarifying that Ubi. Didn’t know gameplay will be shown eventually. Shocker. The point is that it was expected today . . .
@itshoggie I mean, it's hardly got a unique identity anymore. It lost all of that with Odyssey. That may have been true in the past, but not anymore.
@Jaz007 I actually struggle with why Odyssey gets such high scores.
It doesn't justfy it's huge world, no depth at all
It gets really grindy
It's story makes no sense in context with the actual AC lore.
Can't actually assassinate anyone a level over you
And the animations are very janky.
Some actually compare it to The Witcher and Horizon, I don't think they really played those games if that's the case.
@AdamNovice Yes, exactly. I also struggle with its GotY nominations. Who actually thought it had a chance?
Witcher comparisons drive me up the walls. It took inspiration from Witcher with no understanding of what made it so great. Witcher has a strong sense of identity, great writing, and excellent choices with visible and tangible consequences. These are not things Odyssey has.
This also leaves me completely unexcited for AC: Vikings. Regardless of what kind of a Viking game it is, I don’t see it being a good AC game.
Yep. That was the most underwhelming and pathetic gameplay reveal I have ever seen. I was expecting to get a 10 or 15 minute vertical slice, like we did with the first gameplay of Assassin's Creed Origins.
Meh. As someone who's not really that into AC, they had a chance to grab my attention yesterday but they wasted it and clearly mislead.
Next time they do a "gameplay reveal" , I won't be interested.
I think everyone rightfully expected 'gameplay' as that was promised by Ubisoft. I am not denying that some of the scenes could of been taken directly from the 'gameplay' - not cut scenes BUT gameplay is not a montage of 1-3secs of different parts of the game stitched together - that's a teaser trailer at best.
Gameplay, to me, is a single section of the game that shows off the basic premise of what you can expect - (maybe like Bright Memory Infinite showed at the start), or at the very least short clips of actual game-play that shows off various aspects of the type of gameplay you will be doing. In the case of AC, maybe a few clips of combat with the character, the boat (if naval combat is in this game), some parkour etc - all clips that whilst 'stitched' together, shows us what the game play will be like from a players perspective. I know that some games can't exactly show the bulk of what the game-play involves without stitching together a few different scenarios - unless you have a 'long' clip - its difficult to go from fighting ships at sea to storming a castle in 30secs of 'continuous' gameplay so stitching together a few examples is acceptable in that situation.
Personally, I would prefer to see just 1 continuous block of actual game-play. 2mins of unbroken gameplay that best shows what the player can expect from the game. I wouldn't expect a 2D fighting game to show me some 3D CGi from its cutscenes - I would expect to see an example of a fight - even if its not consecutive by swapping some of the characters etc but you know exactly what to expect.
Its no wonder people were disappointed when Ubisoft generated hype and promised 'game-play' - supposedly the 'highlight' and 'finale' to the show and then let everyone done with another teaser trailer instead.
I don't know what people expected even if there IS a gameplay video, It's an AC game, nothing revolutionary since Brotherhood and Black Flag
You can practically imagine it yourself in your head of what the gameplay is like and it'll be 100% true
@nessisonett haha yeah and we only need the d-pad for left/right controls!
Anyway I can see why people are pissed. They promised gameplay so that’s what people expected. We know we will see gameplay at some point in their marketing campaign but they shouldn’t promise what they’re not going to deliver. Especially when people are so hungry for proper next gen info...
For once I'd like to see a developer respond with something like, 'We'll show you gameplay when we're ready to do so, you bunch of impatient brats.'
I lost a bit of hype for this game when I found out Ismail was directing.. Black Flag and Origins were my least 2 favourite AC games. I hope he can sway me with this new one.
@Jaz007
I'm not Interested in AC so I guess I hope it's not a good AC game. I just want to play a good Viking open world game and hopefully I can bear the gameplay mechanics and silly drones.
Fair play to Ubisoft for putting their hands up on this one
If they kill off Layla I just might buy this.
Even putting aside the "gameplay" debate-ultimately,isn't this much like AC Black Flag with this being cross-gen? Will there really be that much difference between the current gen & new gen ones? (Away from the visuals). Middle Earth obviously benefited from being on current gen vs the ps3/360 versions, but you'd think Ubisoft would be loathe to turn their back on current gen sales quite yet for AC.

Ha xD
It was a plain insult to claim that was gameplay even during the post reveal interview. I, at least, felt played after all the marketing campaign emails from Ubisoft and Xbox I got spammed with screamed "COME SEE GAMEPLAY".
Anyways, what can I do? Like a tool, I will wait for the proper thing and eventually buy the game.
