The review embargo for Resident Evil 3 has just dropped, and we're seeing all the scores rolling in right now. Unfortunately, the general consensus on this remake isn't quite as strong as it was for 2019's Resident Evil 2 revival. It's not all doom and gloom, but this sequel doesn't quite reach the same heights as Leon and Claire's Raccoon City romp. Overall, it's done pretty well for itself, but impressions are less enthusiastic this time around.
Here's a selection of scores from various publications:
Push Square - 7/10
Resident Evil 3 had the potential to better its classic predecessor, but a disappointing amount of cut content and the let down that is Nemesis hold it back from greatness. It's still an experience very much worth revisiting, with Raccoon City and the hospital receiving a lot of love and attention, however, it only makes us question what could have been that little bit more.
GameSpot - 6/10
As a remake, Resident Evil 3 not only falls short of honoring its source, but it also doesn't quite stick the landing as a standalone horror experience. Even without taking into account the original game, or its predecessor, RE3 struggles to keep up with its pace amid a clashing of elements from survival horror and standard action. While it has a strong start and gives its principal villain some great moments, this truncated retelling of the concluding game from the original Resident Evil trilogy doesn't do it proper justice.
VG247 - 3/5
It’s still worth playing, but Resident Evil 3 Remake is a step backwards for Capcom, coming off the back of one of the best games of last year. It’s gorgeous to look at, the jump scares will get you, and it’s like stepping into a comfy pair of slippers. But even though your feet are cosy, it never feels like home.
PC Gamer - 58/100
Both the Nemesis and Raccoon City are massively underused in this disappointing step back for the series.
Eurogamer - No Score
The source material is - and I think this is the perceived wisdom - simply not as good as the original Resident Evil 2. But I can't shake the feeling the Resident Evil 3 remake was rushed - as its original was. Now that's an unfortunate parallel.
IGN - 9/10
With a sublimely detailed world and breakneck survival-horror gameplay, Resident Evil 3 is just as good as its 2019 predecessor. More, please!
So, that's what critics make of Resident Evil 3. Are you excited to tackle Nemesis on 3rd April? Dodge roll into the comments below.

Feels like the game should've had more time in the oven.
Edit: Just basing it off of the final thoughts on the reviews. I still plan on getting it cause I really like the original Resi 3.
Playing the game already here i think it's under rated especially since people talking about cut content and Re2 had so many stuff left from the original. Everyone got opinion i guess.
I don't think it would've been fair to expect it to live up to REmake 2, especially since the original RE 3 also wasn't nearly as good as the original RE 2 but even just from the demo there was enough to be concerned about. Game felt sloppy and rushed. I love the series so I'm going to keep my pre-order and pick up a copy but hopefully this isn't the start of a bad trend just when it looked like things were going in a great direction again.
Typical ign and its reviews that they are paid to give.
@Yaycandy was death stranding 6/10 paid too ? Lol
IGN will give a 9/10 to pretty much anything. As long as it doesn't say 'Only On Playstation' on the box.
FYI it’s sitting at 80 on metacritic vs the 65/70 it’s averaging based on the above snippets.
Still pumped for the game!! Hopefully the multiplayer will help round out the shorter single player content. (Even if it is an unbalanced mess lol)

It's a shame about the cut content but I'm still getting it because I know I'll enjoy it. Hopefully ShopTo deliver it early.
@Quintumply game informer gave it a 9 👍🏻
Can't wait for it anyway.
I remember the original version of 3 not being as good as 2. I expected the same here. That's not to say that it wasn't also a blast though.
And honestly, I don't mind Nemesis being restricted to scripted sequences. I loved Tyrant, but that was a different game. I can play RE2 any time I choose. It'll be nice to be able to butcher zombies in RE3 without the constant fear.
Now, if they just retcon that one thing this game will be giving me everything I want...
I'm glad I read the leaks, saved me a disappointing pre-order.
Now onto FF7R!
@kyleforrester87
Thesixthaxis gave it a 9 as well, definitely a site to trust for review scores in my experience.
Re3 has always been my favourite game in the series so these reviews aren't going to put me off getting it
2 was a far far far better game than 3 originally. Massively superior. So it’s not surprise that reworking 3 it’s comes off the same. I’m not worried. 2 was one of the best games of all time both when the original released and when the remake came along. I’m ok with three being slightly worse. 2 is sublime.
Three originally while far inferior to 2 it was still one of the best games money could buy.
Why does EuroGamer exist can someone tell me that every time or nearly every time they give a no score
@Shepherd_Tallon Retcon what thing? I've played the original, so nothing would be a spoiler, but without any spoilers here (if it is a spoiler) to keep the experience spoiler-free for others!
I think the problems is capcom shouldn't wastes resources making multiplayer part of the game, just focus on the single player and expand the remake so it's become the best version of resident evil 3, but what capcom did is removing features from the original resident evil 3, like multiple choice (run or fight nemesis) and endings.
I still plan to buy it but I'll wait for a discount since I heard it's only 5 hours playtime compared to resident evil 2 remake 10 hours (and with additional route with claire). I usually don't choose games because of playtime, but $60 for a 5 hours game where's persona 5 royal, ff7 remaster, and later tlou 2 and ghost of tsushima exist is a bit much.
@keihtg I'm trying to think of a way to put it that would give nothing away for anyone else who doesn't know the story.
In the original game there were 2 or 3 alternate endings, but they all had one thing in common. If that one thing was cut, I'd love it.
No harm if they don't do it, but it would be cool if they did it.
@Nakatomi_Uk They give out Essential ratings, but only to Switch games🤨
Well someone at IGN is scared easily lol i had a feeling it wouldnt match RE2 especially when resistance was bolted on. I enjoyed the demo and will get it down the line but Capcom have stumbled on this one. In fairness its not a big stumble and the run of great games had to end sometime
Those reviews are so rubbish
I don't want to step on anyone's toes but in my opinion it's a great game, keep in mind that even if the original was way better they needed to change some things for the remake just make it fun for us, if not what would be point to play the same game all over again,
I'm just excited to play this game and look forward for future games.
