Recently, Japan's national broadcasting organisation NHK hosted a number of Final Fantasy polls, asking fans to vote on their favourite game, characters, bosses, and music. Almost half a million votes were cast, and some of the results are... Well, some of them are reasonable, but others are questionable at best.
Indeed, Japan reckons Final Fantasy X is the greatest entry in Square Enix's long running series. Now look, we love Final Fantasy X -- even if some parts of it have aged really, really badly -- but we'd never even think about calling it the best of the bunch. We all know Final Fantasy IX is the one to beat (obviously).
Anyway, here are the top ten Final Fantasy games according to the poll:
- Final Fantasy X
- Final Fantasy VII
- Final Fantasy VI
- Final Fantasy IX
- Final Fantasy XIV
- Final Fantasy V
- Final Fantasy VIII
- Final Fantasy IV
- Final Fantasy XI
- Final Fantasy XV
Final Fantasy XII -- a masterpiece in our eyes, and we'll never be convinced otherwise -- is all the way down in 15th place, while the eternally divisive Final Fantasy XIII enters just ahead of Vaan and the gang in 14th.
Meanwhile, here are the top ten Final Fantasy characters according to the poll:
- Cloud (Final Fantasy VII)
- Yuna (Final Fantasy X)
- Aerith (Final Fantasy VII)
- Vivi (Final Fantasy IX)
- Zidane (Final Fantasy IX)
- Emet-Selk (Final Fantasy XIV)
- Tidus (Final Fantasy X)
- Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII)
- Tifa (Final Fantasy VII)
- Zack (Final Fantasy VII)
That's a whole lot of Final Fantasy VII, isn't it? Even Zack managed to make the top ten, with Sephiroth just behind him in 11th place.
As for bosses, Knights of the Round (Final Fantasy VII) tops the charts, while the immensely atmospheric At Zanarkand (Final Fantasy X) was voted best music track.
Interesting stuff, but do you agree with the results? Give us your obviously correct opinion in the comments section below.

Stupid list, we all know Journey is the best game in the Final Fantasy series.
Cant believe how shafted 12 got!! Absolute stonker of a ff...
Before that re-release no one ever mentioned FF12 at all though... The only reason anyone knew it existed before that point was because FF12 was a numbered series; even then though, you'd have to think about the fact that 12 seemed missing... It's the most strangely low-key game I know of.
FFX is actually the only final fantasy game I ever played (Besides FF tactics, does that count?). I played through it twice back on the ps2 and loved it.
yeah but you're all forgetting one thing, this is a Japanese list by Japanese gamers and it's no secret that in the east when it comes to games peoples tastes are vastly different to here in the west so what appeals to us wont necessarily appeal to them and vice versa
besides FFX is awesome anyway
Well. Thanks to this pole, SE can begin production Final Fantasy X-3.
Wishful thinking.
Final Fantasies 7-9 are the best. Donβt ask me to pick between them.
Shame that XII got shafted, but I agree with number 1, X is my favorite.
@FullbringIchigo I doubt it has much to do with them being Japanese, probably factors like age range/recency bias are more responsible for the result. Not saying it's a wrong result (but it is, lets be real), it's just one of many potential results.
@Jake3103 I agree, 7-9 are awesome. 8 is awful. We're totally vibing aren't we!
Ugh-I find X to be the most over-rated. I enjoyed the battle system though!
@HungryWolf as long as they don't adapt the -Will- audio drama because that sucks
and i say that as a huge FF fan, seriously they break up Tidus and Yuna, after everything they went through in X and X-2 and even bring back Sin because apparently now Summoners can resurrect the dead, it's dumb
(and yes i know they might be spoilers to some but it's so bad i don't want anyone to listen to it)
VII is my favorite overall, top OST goes to VIII, and XIII takes the gameplay crown. But X has the most powerful ending of the entire series. Thatβs still the conclusion to top for me.
I finally beat all the entries when I finished XV last year. Definitely my favorite series still. If I had to rank them, theyβd probably go:
1. VII
2. VI
3. XIII
4. X
(Tactics)
5. IX
6. VIII
7. XII
8. IV
9. XV
10. V
11. I
12. II
13. III
VIII/XII and IV/XV/V are the closest together.
@kyleforrester87 i wasn't saying it's because they are Japanese it just in that region more people tend to prefer their RPG's more like X than they do like XII
Come now, we all know World of Final Fantasy should top the chart by a landslide. I mean, who doesn't love the high pitched rat that accompanies you that never stops talking?
Jokes aside, with regards to main entries, VII and X are definitely my top favorites in the series with VI right behind them. XII feels too MMO-ish and I still haven't played VIII or IX (whoops). The XIII trilogy may not be the greatest but I had fun with them and I kinda clump I-V together cause I've only dabbled into each one a little bit.
@FullbringIchigo I can't remember were I read or listen, but if there is a FF X-3, it is not a full adaptation of the -Will- audio drama or the novel X-2.5. They may pick some ideas from those stories.
@HungryWolf as long as they don't have Tidus get blown up by a Blitzball with a bomb in it
(and yes that did happen)
@Deadlyblack i know right how could people not the like it and it's the strange way of talking
but what do they the know hey?
I've said it before I'm really glad ffxv isn't doing too bad on either list though I just realized there are 15 mainline games so it being in 10th means it's pretty at the bottom lmao. Still though, as much as it suffers from the Dev hell it went through, its still far from a terrible game
And I loved FFX so I'm glad its still getting recognition. Tidus and Yuna are really great characters and the story had me teary eyed
I've never enjoyed FFX, unfortunately.
Sad to see the complete lack of love for XII. It's easily in my top five favorite games in the series.
@Judal27 agreed
although being 10th out of 15 games is still pretty decent, it's in the middle 5 after all
i wonder which game was last on the list though?
X-2 was the first one I ever played, my favorite is xii but I understand the appeal for x, I enjoyed it too
And they right π
I think I'm more in line w/ Japanese tastes than western tastes when ti come sot these games. I'm still a fanboi for FF7 but FFX really did take it to the next level graphically and w/ the voice acting. Wakka's voice alone rates as one of the best in memory. Dont' know if he had stand out voice talent in Japan though. FF8 is my second favorite, right time, right place, love story playing it twice w/ my fiancee' by my side. FF12 was an ok game, but it wasn't really an FF game, only Fran remains in my memory. FF9 I didn't really like at all, too different form 7 adn 8, all I recall is the opening 1 hour of the game was 45 minutes of gorgeous - for the time - cut scenes and Vivi is 1 of the best ever FF characters.
And much like Japan 1-6 dont' resonate w/ me. I played them all, like back-to-back-back on those PS1 disc collections, but nothing stands out form 20 years ago. There was a wall. It killed me. A lot. Maybe never got past it. FF4 if I had to guess.
One Winged Angel is the best FF song, that isn't really up for debate w/ me as there is no #2. Chocobo music is catchy though.
@Jaz007 FF12 has been favorite since it released. But, im probably in the minority. Then 7, then tactics, after that it gets hard for me to say which ones are better. FF1 was the first turn based rpg i played so it would also be high on my list.
@rjejr only fran remains in your memory, wonder why that is? lol
@ellsworth004 Not gonna lie.. bunny girls are the best girls.
Though if there was 1 other thing from that game it would be those darn malboros. They still haunt my nightmares. It's like constantly dieing from malboros was the price I had to pay for having Fran in my game.
@rjejr a game with a race of playboy bunnies in it has to be the best game ever! Malboros are evil i agree, i hate status effects and they are the king of status effects.
final fantasy xv at the bottom of the list exactly where it belongs.
i would place final fantasy xii somewhere in the middle of the list, even if it was a great departure from the other entires of the series. it had a great world to explore, unique battle system, amazing soundtrack and one of the most serious/mature storylines of any final fantasy game.
also, i am a bit surprised xiii did not make the list since i always thought it did better in japan. it might just be that lightning is a popular character over there but the games themselves, not so much. final fantasy xiii was when the franchise fell from grace. at this stage, it is hard to have faith that s-e will deliver another noteworthy final fantasy game ever again (not including final fantasy vii remake as that was designed during squaresoft's golden age obviously and is not a "new" idea). the talent at modern day s-e is just too incompetent to write a good story it seems.
@FullbringIchigo At nintendolife they had the full lists which includes spin offs. No.30 was record keeper lol.
So yeah it is pretty damn decent that ffxv made it to at least top 10. Hopefully ffxvi doesn't go through what xv did though.
Unfortunately it seems Japan really really donβt like POC in their games because it canβt be a coincidence that theyβre all way low down on the character ratings. Barrett is dead last which is mad when you think of all the worse characters in the series.
@Judal27 i don't think it will, i think Square might have learnt their lesson on that one
@nessisonett yeah but then again Tidus is 7th on the list and he is a POC
@FullbringIchigo Yβknow, I still have no idea what Tidus is. He seems to change skin tone from one cutscene to another but I guess if that hair is bleached within an inch of its life he might be one ππ
@Porco there were 30 games on the list overall so XV being 10th is pretty high up, no where near bottom of the list
FULL LIST

28.Final Fantasy XIII-2 (2011)
29.Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (2009)
30.Final Fantasy Record Keeper (2014~)
@nessisonett yeah i get that, i think it was a limitation of the PS2 sadly but Tidus is a Person of Colour, it's much easier to see in games like Dissidia NT for example and in the FFX cut scenes
Replace number 2 with number 1 and I agree
Also the best characters is cloud, aerith, tifa, and all the main characters from ff7, then tidus, yuna, and all the characters from ff x.
ps. And who the heck is choosing lightning before tifa?? I want names lol
FFX is awful and so is XII. So Japan is half right on this.
@wiiware people with no taste i reckon
#TifaBestGirl
@eltomo more awful than FFXV? choose your words carefully rofl π€£
@huyi truthfully, never played a FF after XII.
I used to consider myself a big FF fan, but there's only 7 games I deem playable.
@FullbringIchigo ahh i see. you are right. ffxv is way too high on the list! must have been voted in by noobs who are new to the franchise. no respectable final fantasy fan would place that game in their top 10! it also has the advantage of being a newer entry and still fresh in people's minds, so that could be part of it.
@FullbringIchigo The full list is pretty damning tbh but there are wider social issues to do with even darker skinned Japanese people ie Okinawans. The games list isnβt awful but some of the choices are a bit iffy. XIII-2 definitely improved on XIII but thatβs not saying much π
@Porco hey everyone likes different things so i try not to judge, personally i really enjoyed my time with FFXV but there are certainly better ones
@nessisonett yeah for example FFII shouldn't be anywhere near that high, it is objectivity the worst of the series
not saying it's a bad game but a lot of it's game play elements are very frustrating

@FullbringIchigo I have no idea how I finished FFII, it literally makes no sense. Lower than it is Tactics Advance, my favourite spin off or sequel in the whole series and I wish more people would play it because it nails the mission structure.
@nessisonett Tactics never released in the UK and EU sadly so that could have impacted it a bit, we did get the remaster War of the Lions on PSP but it was digital only
over here Tactics Advanced was much more popular of course that could be because we actually got that one
oh and FFXII Revenant Wings on the DS was also a pretty good tactical RPG, it was also the canon sequel to FFXII too
XII and IX remain my favourites. Silly Japan.
Not enough love for VI. That game is fabulous.
X isn't even the best out of the bad Final Fantasy games.
Though I do like 10 very much a vehemently disagree with that... Er... Finding.
I wasn't a big fan of Final Fantasy X and I can't stand XII.
For me I'd have VII top and probably VIII is second place, I'm actually playing IX for the very first time now so I don't know where that will end up on my list
I have only played X and X-2 so those are my favorite FF games of all time!!
@Oriion Try 7 and 8 it will blow gour mind. π
@themcnoisy I missed one card Seifer π€¬π€¬π€¬
I still remember. π
Tifa at number 9 what. I loved Squall and Rinoa. This list is a crime.π
@FullbringIchigo Sorry but i own the PSP version a collectors edition. π
@FullbringIchigo Isnβt his dad light skinned though? Iβm pretty sure Tidus is just a tan beach guy (heβs on a beach in his main art even) which fits his personality. Some people start to look like a different race when theyβre tan enough, but Iβve never once looked at Tidus and thought he was black. It never even occurred to me think that if I hadnβt read the comments here.
@themcnoisy No, this is the link youβre looking for, trust me. https://youtu.be/sOzM4ClFG1o
Thoughts on why XV is so disliked? (admittedly, it's one of the only ones I've played)
What is everyone's favorite world-building in a FF game?
Haven't played FFX before but to me it had some of my least favourite character designs (starting from VI onwards) in the FF universe.
I'm also surprised that FFXII wasn't even in the Top 10. That game was great!
@rjejr I agree with you on the tastes part.
FFX is my favourite one on the list and I see why. These lists are always subjective so the writer on this post shouldn't be so condescending.
To Zanarkand is my favourite FF song of all time and made me realise games can be art. I can pinpoint the exact moment i realised that my opinion on games had changed forever.
My top 4 is funny enough exactly the same as the Japanese list.
@SuperiorSpidey Because the game is a mess and the combat is hold X to win. I mean, I liked Final Fantasy XV, but it's easy to see why people wouldn't like it.
@Flaming_Kaiser noice...i'm not jealous, not at all
(screams with jealousy)
@Jaz007 no his dad had the same tone as him, his mother was though
Zell never gets any love π’
This is why they need to get the first 6 released on psn as ports but spruced up a bit.
I love VI but it needs to be played by more people.
@Boldfoxrd to be honest i think everyone and their mother has played VI at this point (fun fact my mother had in fact played and completed FFVI)
the issue is with VI (as great as it is) is that it's just too old now, it has a great story but in terms of game play other FF games have come out since and do it better, VII, IX, X even X-2
FFVI has reached that age where it only really appeals the series fans and fans of retro games same as FFVII that's one of the reason VII is getting a remake
the gaming market has changed a lot since it's release and whether or not for the better is a different debate in itself
@FullbringIchigo Yeah sometimes your lucky (screams for missing RE3 collectors edition)
I still think the PS1 entries was Square at their finest in general considering they were all like a year apart lol. For me it goes 7, 9, 4, 6, 10, 8, 12, 3. Those i completed. Cant properly speak on 1, 2, 5, 13 trilogy or 15. Never finished 1, 2 or 5 and never finished 13 trilogy...which led me to NOT even playing 15 or looking forward to it lol
What a strange and interesting list.
Imho numbered FF are all very good JRPGS, generally leagues ahead of productions of the same genre, with production values on a completely different scale.
It's just that some gamers have somehow grasped the knowledge of "what Final Fantasy is" or "what a JRPG is" and are very eager to share their enlightened revelations with us mortals.
Just play them all, they are all interesting.
XII and V seem especially low-key for some reason. Both so good!
@Netret0120 "so the writer on this post shouldn't be so condescending"
I think that's the only way Shogun knows how to write. π
Sammy also hates anime and all anime fans, which I think is hilarious running a video game site. Also why Shogun covers all games that have any anime connection.
To be honest i can agree with this list looks pretty legit.
And yay for FFX being top
...FFX is the only one I've actually completed (despite playing so many of them...) and I have to say it was an absolute stonker.. I was so invested in the characters, and then the storyline twist... amazing stuff...
@kyleforrester87 I loved 8 its my favorite together with 7 and 9 a close second. Final Fantasy 8 was my first Final Fantasy. My favorite characters Cloud, Tifa, Squall, Rinoa. π
Omnislash and Lionheart best Limit Breaks
@johncalmc Oh for sure. Even button mashing would've been better. What's your favorite?
Really great to FF6 in the top 3!
My favourite, more so the PS1 remake which had the new FMV.
Would love to see 6 with a 7 style remake.
