Remember back at E3 2019 when Square Enix said that Final Fantasy VII Remake would ship on two Blu-ray discs? Well, it wasn't kidding. Images of the game's Korean cover have made it online, and the back of the box confirms that the long awaited role-playing release will be at least 100GB in size. Jeez.

It's assumed that Final Fantasy VII Remake will be packed with high quality cinematic cutscenes, which typically take up a lot of file space. On top of that, Square Enix has stated on numerous occasions that this is a "full game" despite being just the first instalment in this new Final Fantasy VII series. Honestly, we're expecting it to be a surprisingly lengthy experience.
Will you have to make room for Final Fantasy VII Remake on your hard drive? Cast Ultima on your unplayed games in the comments section below.

1 TB hard drive over here.
You ain't stopping me for NUTHIN!
That's a THICC game.
But np, I already have the HDD space reserved.
2TB internal w/ about 700GB of space left, so I’m definitely good
More than prepared to sacrifice a few games for the glory of Sephiroth
I have an 8TB drive and very little storage space left...
@Enuo I'm constantly deleting stuff off my 2TB hard drive...
100GB for the Part 1? I wonder how much the complete "series" is gonna take. But then, given Square Enix history, all parts will take about 20 years to be released. Streaming will probably take over by then, I guess.
Never played the original, should I get this???
99GB of it is the Knights of the Round animation.
Uh... I gotta make space. I’m still packing games into my 1TB hard drive
I've only got a 500 GB PS4. Time to delete everything!
Yeah, a few games are going to get the old Masamune through the chest in order to fit this bad boy.
@3MonthBeef Better have a huge hard drive then.
200gb when we get the part of the remake that has Emerald and Ruby Weapon.
Man, Emerald is going to be terrifying in modern graphics and underwater. Watching him lurking in the ocean is going to be so unsettling.
@3MonthBeef Doing the same, to me it feels like episodic content being split up and I hate that.
I want the complete version or at least once they are all out I can play them all the way through in sequence.
Hello everyone been lurking for a while. Played the original when it first released and just recently started playing through it again and I gotta say it holds up very well. The only thing that I'm curious about is supposedly this first installment of the remake only covers until you leave Midgar. Well I just made it out on the original and it took about 5 hours. I really hope they don't fill part 1 up with useless fetch quests much rather them expand the story and characters even more
@Grumps859 Yeah the remake’s 5 hours long. Those 100 GB are actually just really detailed renders of Cloud’s earring.
@Wsritucci37 Well the original is my favourite game of all time and this remake is shaping up to be all I could want from a remake. But we all have different tastes so you should check out the various trailers on YouTube. There's a demo coming out at some point too (and videos of the demo made by journalists that got to play it early, like Aoife from Eurogamer).
@nessisonett what a relief now I can rest easy until April lol
@Wsritucci37 if u like jrpgs u should definitely get this, if turned based games turn u off then this should be good for u because its a arpg. Like @Matroska said its alot of peoples favorite game ev_er, including mine. Ive played through it so many times. Just a wonderful game. But also as @Matroska said everyones tastes differ. What kind of games do u prefer?
I wonder how big the demo will be?
At this rate i will only be able to have GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 and this installed LMAO!
@BearsEatBeets 22 GB
@sketchturner same here. I think I'm only gonna hold onto Persona 5 and Fifa 20
So if this is just the first part, and the second part will be similar size as well as the third part and so on...
Oof.
Remember when Square Enix reckoned they were delaying was it FFXV (?), cos they were concerned about users who couldn't download big updates? That worked out well!! Can't wait to see the patch sizes on this!!
Bring it on!
The bigger the better. I believe they already said it was going to be multidisc, so I expected as much, although that is literally 2 fully maxed out dual layer bluray discs, which is pretty awesome.
I think Red Dead did the same though If I recall.
Like the article writer put, I imagine a large chunk of that is going to be animated FMV sequences, as there is probably a lot of dialogue and story to unfold inbetween action scenes, so whilst I think it's going to be big, I don't think it will be as big as people think it will be.
60 hours to complete the game (80 for completionist maybe).
@makina cheers that’s hefty for a demo.
At this rate, when they finally finish all the parts and release the complete version physically it will have to come on it’s own hard-drive.
Just Midgar?... Two Blurays?...Think about that for a moment... After all the games we've had on one, and it's one city!?... I don't buy it.
In the iconic words of Barret, "There aint no gettin offa this train we're on!"
@Enuo not hard to fill up 1TB on a ps4.. i have 1.5TB and it's constantly full. Need to delete like 3 games every time I want to put a new game on there it feels.
@Wsritucci37 definitely. No need at all to play the original. It's just a nostalgic experience for us that have and a brand new epic experience for those that haven't.
@Matroska funny but that won't be in this first installment. By the time they come out with the third part or whatever it will be, game textures and assets will take up so much space it will probably need 1TB for KOTR animation.
@nessisonett no spoilers! Lol
@RenanKJ SquEnix have already said that the other parts won't take as long to make cos most of the ground work has been done on part 1. I reckon we could see another part every 12 - 18 months.
Even more reason to go digital on this game for me.
@TheAwesomeBowser they'll be much bigger as have textures become higher res and assets become larger in file size. As well as the increase in complexity of animations and everything else that does into games by the second and third installments.
@Real_Obsi it's not going to feel like a typical City you find in other games.. the entire game will go through many different sections of the same city with varying environments. Just like cyberpunk 2077.. it's all in one huge City with different areas and sections to it.
@Deadlyblack I just hope part 2 and 3 have an overworld, can't imagine what the underwater section would be like without one.
@JohnnyShoulder realistically it'll take at least 2 years for them to make each part but I see what you mean. Each game will likely be very different from the last with the second installment being very open world compared to the first. They have the entire world map to cover. This first one is just set in Midgar (mostly, outside of flash backs and stuff).
Seems pretty standard fare for a AAA now. RDR2, Battlefront 2, GTA V, more and more games are approaching the 100GB mark. PS5 needs to be a 2TB minimum.
If this is real - which, judging by the angle of the photo, I'm inclined to question - then it just makes me angry that in Europe we got the remake's awful American box art rather than this perfect ode to the original Japanese/European plain white box art.
@3MonthBeef i didn't say it will be a massive open world. Just that it will be more open than the first installment.
@DVS i thought the box art was going to be reversible so you can have both options?
well i figured as much when they said it was going to be on 2 discs
@3MonthBeef it's not episodic it's in parts there is a difference, episodic is when it's like The Walking Dead or Life is Strange where they are small, short segments that last a few hours that release individually
but in parts is more like games such as Mass Effect or even the FFXIII Trilogy, full games with loads of content and a long length that cover a chapter of the story but are complete in that part of the story they tell
think of it in terms of films, were the Lord of the Rings films "episodes" just because the narrative took place over 3 films or were they full films?
i really wish people will stop saying it's "episodic" because it's giving people the wrong idea of what it actually is, a 40+ hour game is not episodic, it's a full game it's just it's story carries over into another game
@FF7FoLife I have no idea how I missed this priceless nugget of information from November. You are indeed right! Tonight I will sleep a little deeper with a smile in my face. Thank you!
@3MonthBeef I gladly would do that for FF7R i waited more then two decades for it.
@3MonthBeef This is a more then a episode this 40 plus hours of gameplay. 😆
@FullbringIchigo Exactly.. I was just about to say this. They mistakenly used the word "episodic" in the very beginning not realizing the implications of the word. It's not "episodic" but just a huge story that needs to be told over several parts. It's not just going to cover the original story, but a much expanded upon and altered version of the original story.
@Flaming_Kaiser And that's probably just the base game without much attention to the side quests and other optional stuff.
And I always think 50 gigs is pretty big for my poor standard 1tb hard drive 😂
@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy 100 is the new 50
I have 2tb with free space maybe about 140gb, I think I'm good after finishing spider-man dlc and delete it.
@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy i got a 2TB External HDD hooked up to my PS4 and even i'm worried about having enough room for all the Parts
it's why i decided to get a few games on my XB1 instead to make sure my PS4 has room for every part released
I had no doubt it was gonna be that huge, but still...DAMN.
I may have to invest in a 2TB SSD later this year.
@Wsritucci37 absolutely. The original is without doubt one of the greatest games ever made.
@BarefootBowser if £150 over the next, say, 10 years gets me 3 really good Final Fantasy that's worth it. I'm a huge fan of the original and I cannot wait for this.
Hours of cut scenes lol.
@3MonthBeef i understand all that BUT when it comes to games when someone says "episodic" they assume it's a release like the TellTale games or Life is Strange because that's what they were called
that's why we say Part 1 instead of Episode 1, by saying Part it implies that it's a larger more robust experience than an episode more in line with a film than a TV show, if that makes sense
after all bar the Star Wars films not many other films series call each film a "episode" even if it's one narrative for example Lord of the Rings, it wasn't Lord of the Rings: Episode 1 it was LotR The Fellowship of the Ring or LotR Part 1
@FF7FoLife thanks. Really looking forward to it now. Was gonna try the original but, meh, I’ll wait for the remake!
@ellsworth004 thanks. It gets like universal praise from literally everyone so even if the remake isn’t “as good” as the original still gonna be new and epic for me!
Thank goodness I just freed up almost 1GB in old Death Stranding save files - kept only my last 2 saves and my user profile save (or whatever it is called). Finished it yesterday, great game!
Shenmue III is next and my PS4 backlog will be complete until April 10th!
In a few months, I should be able to replace my current 1TB external drive, so I can use that to store more of these gigantic PS4 games.
this game will be a beast in size, that is for sure.
@Wsritucci37 imho... Yes, you should. It's one of the best RPGs out there. I own and have beaten the original 1997 version countless times. I'm stoked for this version
We shouldn’t be surprised by these file sizes now, especially as we are heading to a new generation. Glad I moved and upgraded my internet plan to a new ISP with a faster and unlimited data.
I started with ff 15 and it was amazing I really hope that ff7 remake combat is like 15 was I also loved the explanation of 15 I want more of that also I'm so excited for this if it is
Y is the comment box at the bottom of the comment list its annoying haveing to scroll all the way to the bottom of the list just to leave comment
@Wsritucci37 the only reason it wouldn't seem as good is because of nostalgia. But pretty much anyone that hasn't played the original will likely consider the remake a better game than the original since it hasn't aged well but was a masterpiece for its time.
@BarefootBowser they've stated that the second part is well under development and go much faster now that they've gotten a lot of the difficult foundational stuff out of the way. Plus they have made the decision to stick with unreal engine so that speeds it up as well.
@potter32 you know what i have never thought about it but you right it is a pain to have to scroll to the bottom every time you want to comment
@ShogunRok what do you think, should the comment box be moved to the top of the section or not?
I came into this whole remake thing so many years ago so cynical. My favorite game of all time was going to be trashed. Action battle system? Episodic model? Square Enix run of poor releases? Gah it was going to ruin it.
Then came the teasers.
Man, they did a great job on the models. The voice acting seems really good. Look at the location art, wow!
Then came the trailers and more of the same feelings that they were going to do this right. At some point several months ago I stopped watching any further videos. I skipped the opening video too because I absolutely expect to cry when the camera pulls out and the logo is displayed with that amazing theme song.
I just can't explain how much this game means to me. It was such a huge part of my youth. I have never been more excited for a game - I have gone from hugely cynical to on the edge of my seat just waiting for the release. Every new piece of news has heightened that feeling that they're going to knock this out of the park.
Not much longer to go.
@FullbringIchigo yes deffanitly
@3MonthBeef yes by literal definition the word episode doesn't mean anything different than volume or parts when it comes to length. But the problem is that most people ASSOCIATE the word episode with TV series and they are usually very short compared to volumes, parts, etc in media. So that's why everyone freaked out about it being "episodic".
@potter32 @FullbringIchigo I'll hand your feedback over to the management!
@BarefootBowser I would certainly like to know more about the other parts, but I can't think of a winning situation for them.
If they say the other 2 parts, assuming there are 2, come out 1 each the next 2 years, people will be like 'Oh, that's soon, I'll just wait for them all to come out."
If they say each part will take 4 years to come out, people will say '"Oh, that's too long, I'll just wait for them all to come out."
And since everyone has a different idea of what's too long and what's too soon to wait, ANY info they give on a timeline is going to cost them sales from people who wait for all the parts.
Same for the number of parts I think. If they say, it's only 2 parts, people will just wait for part 2, if they say ti's 4 parts, people will wait b/c you'll need to buy a PS5 for part 2 and 3 and a PS6 for part 4.
So while I really wanna know, I understand that the reason I wanna know is just to give myself an excuse to wait until it's all done. In 8k. On PS6. Just look at Kingdom Hearts.
I'm not sure they have anything to gain by telling us until after this part sells boatloads. Maybe at E3?
@potter32 it's going to be a lot more tactical than ff15 was. Ff15 was so simplistic and mindless with the combat although fun for a while. The storytelling will be vastly better than ff7R than ff15. It's almost a guarantee.
@FullbringIchigo it should be a floating box that follows you at the bottom of your page as you scroll OR there should be a floating button in the corner u can press any time u want to add a comment and when pressed, it brings you automatically to the bottom where the comment box is.
@FF7FoLife yeah that could work
@ILikeStake nice! I think a lot of people went through this same process. You're strong to be about to stop watching trailers and stuff being released. It'll make the experience that much better when you finally play it fresh.
@ShogunRok @potter32 @FullbringIchigo
I feel like we've had this conversation before and the reason was twofold.
1. To keep people from repeating the same question or comment in a post over and over again. When is it coming out? What's the price? Maybe the 3rd comment answers your question, don't need 6 comments asking the same question that's already been answered.
2. Interaction. Ant set up that auto-email reply 8 or so years back. I'm pretty sure he went to the trouble of doing that so people can have conversations. If the comment box is up top, no conversations, just post and leave.
I do like @FF7FoLife idea of the floating box but I wouldn't hold my breath. Most of these articles probably average about 20 comments, these 100 comment posts are still fairly rare.
Maybe there can be a poll for the box on top but I don't see it happening.
@BarefootBowser that's usually due to them maintaining their high standards and always trying to build their games in their own engines that are still under development. This time they're sticking to unreal engine which is super established, powerful and simple to use. It will speed up the process a lot just for that reason alone.
@ShogunRok regarding the comment box annoyance, it should be a floating box that follows you at the bottom of your page as you scroll OR there should be a floating button in the corner u can press any time u want to add a comment and when pressed, it brings you automatically to the bottom where the comment box is.
@rjejr i get all that but then again people still don't bother to read the comments anyway, they just jump right to the bottom of the page to post
that's why people get so many responses to a comment that they have already answered further on the comments section
@BarefootBowser Oh, I agree they dont' know specifics, but I still think they HAVE to know about how many parts it will be. How could they go into this project w/o knowing? They knew it was going to be more than 1, so 2 is the low end, and it's probably fair to say less than 10. So in 1 second I narrowed down to between 2 and 9 off the top of my head. So it's probably realistically either 2, 3 or 4, so they should just say that. At least that sounds better than a blanket "we dont' know".
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2019/06/e3_2019_how_many_parts_will_final_fantasy_vii_remake_be_split_into_not_even_square_enix_knows
And they must have a timeline, they are a publicly traded company and have to answer to shareholders. You can't go into something like this w/o a budget, and a budget requires a timeline. 1 year, 2 years, 3 years? Of ocurse I'll never believe a word they say anyway, they delayed FFXV AFTER a huge live event just to announce the release date, but they have to know.
But I don't think they gain anything by telling us anything. The number of part 1 of the game they sell can only go down w/ more info out there, not up, its' going to sell that well, why risk it w/ bad news? And it's Squenix, it's always bad news.
@BarefootBowser mostly standards when it comes to graphics. They've been quite obsessed with being the best looking jrpgs ever at time of release. Not so much in other areas lately.
Its a square game, usually means its best to let it cook for a few months. And being a FF game makes this as close to certain as it get in gaming. Hope this is different but till I know for sure I have this on my PS5 launch list.
@FF7FoLife i also notice your new to the site, if so welcome and if you're interested in talking more about FINAL FANTASY we have an official thread you can use
https://www.pushsquare.com/forums/ps_general_discussion/final_fantasy_easter_egg_and_tips_thread8?start=2140#reply-2144
@FullbringIchigo I'm ok w/ it either way. Let's face it, most people post w/o even reading the article, only the headline. And I have this thing about posting on videos before watching them, then again after I watch it. I was just letting people know this has been discussed before and those were the reasons I remember. I'm pretty sure it was Ant's decision, not sammy's or shogun's. He has to keep NL and PS on par. It would actually make more sen on NL, tons more articles and posts over there. Most of them not worth reading, but that's another story entirely.
The thing I've seen most people ask for recently is setting up the comments like Disqus or something, where you can reply directly to each comment. So basically EVERY comment has it's own comment box. I actually thought that was coming about a month ago - Ant and damo were discussing something on Twitter, but nothing ever happened as far as I can tell. Unless it was some deep state tracking we can't see.
I'd like the direct reply route - I spend more time on twitter these days than NL or PS - but I imagine that would be difficult to implement on these guys budgets. Though it does seem like more and more blogs are doing it these days. IGN does.
The people have spoken.
@FullbringIchigo thanks. I normally don't post anything but felt inclined to make an account to reply to a few people on this topic.
@FF7FoLife and now we have your soul
BWHAAAAA!!!
i mean glad to have you here
(i think i got away with that)
@FullbringIchigo ok bye. Lol jk
@FF7FoLife but being serious for a second the user base here is pretty good and most often is quite respectful and friendly
you get the odd bad apple of course but all in all this is a pretty good place to chat about games
@3MonthBeef If we go that way then Final Fantasy 13 was a episodic game. Final Fantasy 7R is a full game episodic does not cover it.
@FF7FoLife Calling it a episode is nonsense. Its way too big for that but that my personal opinion.
@Wsritucci37 Absolutely. I loved the original games when they came out and I hope this is absolutely fantastically like the originals just an upgrade. Another thing I love about final fantasy is the music. Totally worth it IMO
I've still got my original 500gb because I'm hardcore.
Square Enix can't win either way. People give out about their games taking forever, so there doing it in parts because it allows them to have a greater scope on the original plus they can get it out sooner.
Imagine if they said "FFVII Remake will take 9 years and be a multi disc 300GB file" people would read them the riot act.
@sweetieliz dope. I don’t take much convincing for new games. Didn’t think I’d buy dreams but 2 review videos and $40 later...
@3MonthBeef The assumption that SE has the capability to put out anything on a decent schedule simply because it's episode or in parts, is a rather bold assumption to make. Whether it's a good idea or not has no impact on SE's release schedule. I hope my kids won't be grown by the time the FF7 Remake is fully finished. (I'm single right BTW, with no kids or plans to have them soon)
@ApostateMage
500GB PS4 Squad! My Harddrive is ready
@FullbringIchigo Noticed that so far. Better than expected.
@ApostateMage softcore*
@Jaz007 The fact they are using Unreal Engine this time and have most of the foundation built from the first part the next parts should go faster than any of their main line titles have gone before.
@FF7FoLife A lot of their development troubles have come from their in house engines, so you're probably right.
Can't wait to get this box in my collection!
@Grumps859 i made it through in 3hours and 43 minutes fastest speed run of it is 1h53m so ya hopefully its not to rediculous
