If Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to be divided up into multiple, large-scale releases, how many instalments are there going to be? It's a fair question, and one that'll probably have crossed the mind of every Final Fantasy fan since the game's showing at the Square Enix E3 presser. The first game will be purely based in Midgar, leaving plenty of the original game still unaccounted for. Will we need to buy three games? Five? Seven?
According to Kotaku news editor Jason Schreier, the answer is that no one knows. Not even the people working on the remake. Over on Twitter, Schreier posted an interesting snippet from an interview with Yoshinori Kitase, producer on the game:
If not even Square Enix knows the answer, we're all doomed. It seems the publisher is putting a ludicrous amount of effort into getting Final Fantasy VII Remake right, as the new gameplay looks fantastic, but how far into the future are we going to be before the end is in sight? It's all very uncertain -- but hopefully, once the first release is out the door, subsequent games won't take as long to roll around.
We'll just have to wait and see. Does this worry you? How many games do you think the remake will be split into? Place your bets in the comments below.

I'm guessing a minimum of three, they probably don't know cos they'll wait till this one is out first. It could also depend if they want to cover some of the spin offs like Crisis Core.
In other words if your hoping for Final Fantasy XVI next gen then it's probably doubtful cos Square Enix will just commit to this.
Crikey, we're in for a LONG wait. Still, we should be used to that right?
Realistically I would say 3 Games/Volumes in total can't imagine it going over 3 especially if they are sticking 2 discs in each game/volume
IL embrace it all anyway
With how the game is looking, I am willing to support however many games they need to make this game the masterpiece that it is. It sounds like they are adding more to the actual game too, so if they find ways to make the story more in depth, I’m all for it.
Whatever. Why do we all want everything now. It’s gunna be great to play FF7 and to be honest I’ll be happy finishing it knowing theirs more to come. Worst case scenario I die and don’t get to play the rest, I won’t be complaining then. There’s not always a lot to look forward to in life, it’s fun to be excited about up and coming games.
SE will be making some serious money off these games though!
And I suppose it’s kind of cool, as they can maybe extend the game into different and new areas if it proves to be a success. Obviously the new content would need to be good quality.. not Cloud advertising instant noodles n that.
Can someone please explain the structure of this game and why it’s massive like this? Wasn’t it a ps1 game? Like is there a ton of empty open world to go through or what? I don’t understand how a game that came out on ps1 was so enormous that the first part of it is now on 2 blu rays.
I'd still expect 3 at most, Midgar is the part that perhaps benefits most from such a remake and needed expanding upon. Don't forget much of the world is empty fields to grind in and I doubt much of that will be in any of these
@Stragen8 it was a mixture of prerendered background areas and open world. Remaking those prerendered parts in full 3D will make those parts naturally a lot bigger. Originally each sector of Midgar you could visit was only a few screens across but fully mapped out will have to be much bigger to make it look like the enormous city it was meant to be. I can only assume at this point that they may have increased the amount of areas you can visit as in the original you didn't actually visit most of Midgar
Honestly I will be shocked if all of them actually will be released.
@carlos82 thanks! That’s cool that they’re really fleshing out areas of the game like that.
@Stragen8 well, a lot of towns and villages were made up of a handful of prerendered backgrounds, even if they were very large areas. I think to make these areas feel believable in a modern game they need to put a lot more time and effort fleshing these locations out.
@Stragen8 @carlos82 yeah that.
OK so I'm confused, from the way they worded it in the conference it sounded like the whole game is 2 disc but we're only getting the first disc next march which comprises of Midgar...judging from this article I must be completely wrong?
I'm just gonna stream it all on Stadia.
@viciousarcanum The first game, the one that comes out in March next year, is on two discs. That game alone. For some reason.
Square Enix is trying it's best to ruin this isn't it? How confusing can it get.
If they can drag out Midgar for one part and you think of all the major points in the original game, thinking about 3.
Educated guess, and spoiler free, after A dies and when C's loses mind would be cliffhangers to end an episode on.
Final Fantasy VII Remake: Redefining 'Cross-Generational Gaming since March 2020.
& people coming at me because i wanted to wait for a complete edition lol. " fly you fools"
@kyleforrester87 "Why do we all want everything now."
It's not about wanting everything now, it's about Squenix being Squenix:
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2018/11/three_of_four_final_fantasy_xv_dlc_episodes_cancelled_director_tabata_leaves_square_enix
And FFXIII vs becoming FFXV and taking 10 years to do so.
People do seem to NOT want things now, it's all about the DLC and season passes and Spaltfests for years. But we usually get inforgraphcis and roadmaps. They may as well have said - "we don't know if we'll be making any more, let's see how it sells first."
Consider yourself vindicated @youreyesonly00
@rjejr he's probably saying that & giving square enix a pass because it's his favorite thing ever (sickening), any other studio would have probably caught hell for this route they are taking..
I'm just hoping they dont milk this. They say it will be full games per episode but what constitutes a full game to square? Will be they the order, God of war or the witcher 3 in length. Not to mention dlc etc etc. I am being optimistic and believing it will be awesome but I've been burned by too many companies to not be weary
@Stragen8 the original game was only 40 hours in length if you played strictly the story bits and did not do all the side content. most of the side content involved chocobo breeding, battle arena and mini games and could add an additional 20 hours to the total playing time if going for a completionist run (the side content was all fluff and not much fun to me personally). i would say there is no reason whatsoever as to why the remake requires two blu rays for just one episode of what could possibly be less than 20 hours of gameplay. other than s-e wanting to get revenue back from us to fund development of the second half, this form of release is an embarrassment in my opinion. people are allowing the nostalgia and excitement cloud their judgement here. at most, i would say the ff7 remake should only require two episodes consisting of 20-25 hours of content each. i believe s-e is throwing around the two blu ray bit as a means to encourage the belief that we are getting good value with this episodic release when really we are not.
@ApostateMage political!
@youreyesonly00 It's inconceivable they don't have a plan for the rest of the game. And yes, I do know what that word means.
This is the best way. It means they can adapt if certain parts deserve more content.
Besides, its also common. GRRM thought A Song of Ice and Fire would be about 3 books but now its going to be over 7. Robert Jordan planned The Wheel of Time to be 3 books, but as he developed it, it ended up being about 12.
@bruhman In the original it was less than 10% of the game. About 6 hours out of 70. But they've expanded it dramatically so there's no saying what percent it is now. Though for sure, many parts are just brief moments in the original, like a few minutes in the Chocobo Ranch or Costa del Sol, so they can move through a lot in the next part.
@bruhman Yeah XV has the worst side missions I've ever seen in a game. I don't think this will be like that. Given how much was skimmed over in the original, I think it'll be expanding on stuff like Jessie, Biggs and Wedge, more Tifa and Aeris stuff, more scenes with the Turks and Rufus Shinra, etc.
@rjejr at the end of the day, a world where a FF7 remake is going to be released will always be more exciting to me than a world where a FF7 remake is not going to be released.
@kyleforrester87 Well yeah, but how does a company sit down to remake a game and not ahead of time say - "OK, this is part 1, this is part 2, this is part 3, and we should plan on releasing them every 3 years." Them saying they don't even know how many parts it will be, that just blows my mind and makes me not want to do any business with that company.
As a homeowner who has had a few home projects done by various contractors, I'm never going with the one who says - yeah, we'll get it done, but we don't know how many steps it will take, how much it will cost, or when it will be done, let's just wing it and see how it goes.
FF7 already exists. This shouldn't be The Wheel of Time 12 book series that turns into 14. Even if ti's a remake they should still have a plan, and they should tells us that plan. Sure things will change, it's Squenix, but have a plan.

@rjejr you’d be silly to believe they have no idea, despite what they are saying. It will inevitably be linked to the success of the initial instalment anyway. If it sells like hot cakes I’m sure internal planning will change.
@kyleforrester87 Well surely they have some idea. But them not saying it makes me think it's only a rough idea, like 3-5 more games, rather than an actual plan, 3 more games, each 2 years apart, which is what they should have. Anybody who has ever played the game, and even those who didn't, can have an idea. There has to be at least 1 more, because we know it isn't finished yet, and it's less than 9999 b/c thats as high as any number can go in that game. But probably somewhere between 2-4.
But an idea isn't a plan, they should have an actual on paper plan. Otherwise the rest of the game is going to be the 4k version of this.

@rjejr I think you’re really over thinking it to be honest. You’re not likely to change your mind but look at many franchises, nothing is ever really finished.* Even in its “complete” form this game misses out various other games and films from its lore. Do they need to be included for you to be ready to buy it, too? They are important to the story after all. I am sure part 1 will be a satisfying experience, giving some closure while leaving you excited about the next one. Film series like Alien are still going 40 years later. Does that mean you won’t watch any of them. You don’t need to answer that. When is anything ever finished. You enjoy the journey. Or don’t. Your shout.
*ok some things ARE finished for various reasons, but you get my point. Even things you think are done with can be added to.
@kyleforrester87 Anything can be added to. But a game can still feel like a game. Uncharted, if played today, 1-4 can feel like 1 game. But, each of those Id' argue can be played independently and feel like you've played a whole game, a whole story. 1, 2 3, or 4. They all have beginnings, middles and endings. (An English major can explain that better than I can, but I think it works the same for story driven games, not 2D Mario platformers, as books.) I think you need to play 4 before LL to really get it, but I don't think you need to play LL to get 4.
Star Wars. Almost everyone who walked out of that theater in 1978 felt like they saw a full movie. Nobody walked out of there saying "I can't wait to see the 3 prequels and it really needs 5 more sequels to feel finished." Well ok some people did want to know what happened to Vader in his ship I'll admit, but the parade at the end felt like an ending.
The Empire Strikes Back. While most people were talking about "Luke, I am your father." almost everyone was waiting for the next movie, b/c that movie did not end well at all. Infinity War ended better than Empire did.
I think FF7R game 1 will end more like Empire, less like Star Wars. FF7 was made to be 1 full game, b/c thats' what it is, 1 full game. Sure, they could make more, like Star Wars, and they did, but that doesn't change FF7.
FFX-2 was completely unnecessary and it has a 2 in the title. It's not really part of FFX in any way shape or form. I always recommend against playing it.
There's a reason the English language has words like "part 2", "sequel", "cliffhanger". Some things are made by taking a whole and spreading it out in parts, some are made as one thing with additional related things made later. Not every movie, book, game or TV show is the same as the others. But FF7 was 1 game. The other games, Dirge of Cerbeurs, Crisis Core, weren't part of the main FF7 game. They were spin-offs, another useful word. FF7 was it's own game. They don't need to remake Cerberus or CC to make FF7R complete. But they do need to remake all of 7, and they should KNOW what and when before they started. And they should tell us what the PLAN is, even though nobody in their right mind would believe them anyway. Maybe less of a plan, more of an outline or guide.
Over thinking things is what I do. I don't like it, but I can't help it.
@rjejr I over think things that matter
The original was a 4 disk game and midgar was pretty much all of disk one so I'd guess that a 4 part game with 2 bluray disks each
@Plastermouse The original was a 3-disc game, not 4. Midgar was only about 3-4 hours of disc one, as well. Disc one ended at A's death, not at leaving Midgar, and you visit almost every location on the overworld map before disc one ended. But, those details aside, that's likely the case - 3 or 4 parts, 2 discs each.
