ANTHEM is just over one month away from launch, and although developer BioWare has explained the game's microtransaction system numerous times before, many are finding it difficult to not be wary of publisher EA and its money-making tactics.
To recap, BioWare has always said that ANTHEM's in-game purchases will feature cosmetic items only -- skins for your Javelin and stuff like that. It's also repeatedly said that the game won't feature loot boxes -- there's no random element when it comes to buying the aforementioned cosmetics.
And this is the line that the studio continues to push. Over on Twitter, lead producer Michael Gamble reiterates: "We aren’t going to add loot boxes. It serves no purpose. The cosmetics and microtransaction plan is what we’ve outlined."
Of course, we still don't know too much about the pricing of these microtransactions, or how often they'll be dangled in front of the player during gameplay. We'll soon find out, we suppose.

"We aren't going to add loot boxes", says the head of a developer.
Bud, your company is tied to EA. YOU don't get a say in this one.
Remember how Black Ops 4 was meant to be the same way then Activision got the reviews out before SURPRISE!!!?
In the AAA space there is such a huge disconnect between what the developer says and wants, and what the publisher will make them do.
Except for the fact that game devs under EA are LIARS. Journalists are going to have a field day when those loot boxes eventually appear...
They're not lootboxes! They're airlifts! Totally different!
Im weary, but at least they are saying the right things.
Interested in this title but will wait a few weeks after release, hopefully then all the surprises will have surfaced.
Cool, still looks boring though and it's EA so there is no way I'm buying anything associated with those child gambling merchants
thing is this is also EA
although now some countries have BANNED Loot Boxes perhaps they wont so as not to affect sales
I believe that loot boxes wont appear but i dont believe that the microtransactions will stay just cosmetic. EA will probably avoid loot boxes in games bar FIFA due to Battlefront 2 but i expect some virtual currency shinanigans a week after launch
Even without the loot boxes, we all know EA. EA is going to attempt to milk the Anthem faithful's wallets dry with those cosmetic microtransactions. Looking cool is a big part of these looter games, and there is no way EA won't take advantage of that.
Im waiting on the characters in games like this to come out with 1 stock brown outfit and then hearing EA say "but it's only cosmetics" for even just a different color skin of same exact outfit....it is coming....99 cents to change color
I think he is likely correct in his assertion, as EA have been badly stung fairly recently for their reliance on loot boxes, specifically. I suspect that something of a similar nature is likely to take their place though. Have to keep those share holders happy.
The random luck element, or gambling if you prefer would be absent of course, as that is what the major focus point of upset is for most.
People are hating companies like EA, Activision and even Bethesda more by the day. This is going to backfire immensely if they continue doing this.
There is only one thing now that pleases gamers and shareholders alike: good games. Just look at Rockstar for proof. When are the big companies going to realise this?
I'm still interested in Anthem, and this is good news, but I think I need to read reviews first.
I just saw the 7 minutes exploration video on ign, the npc face/animation definitely isn't as good as e3 trailer, where the npc face has really good facial animation when their face got close to the protagonist.
Not having loot boxes is missing the point. Remember that EA are willingly breaking the law in Belgium cos they want to protect their Fifa Ultimate Team goldmine.
Could care less either way. I never buy any and usually have a blast.
Another Day 1 for me. Already have a team of 3. Basically my same team mates as The Division.
There still shouldn't be microtransactions either, stop trying to look good for only doing one fewer scummy thing.
If true then it's just a Titanfall 2 system as its system is in game cosmetics only but you can unlock with credits you earn.you can buy the skins if you want and short cut kits for special version titans but I've never needed to not once pay with real money
EA is the Monsanto of video game development.
@Dubya75 No, I don't think he is lying.
@JoeBlogs Pal, that's life in general. That's not new.
@AdamNovice What does that have to do with what he said? That's a whole other problem on the part of EA itself.
@Zoomzeta The point is that just because he said there won't be loot boxes doesn't mean there won't be microtransactions that compromise the game. Saying there's no loot boxes is missing the point of gamers concerns which they don't want microtransactions at all.
@AdamNovice That's fair, given EA's infamous history with microtransactions in general.
