Over the weekend, many PS4 owners reported receiving a PlayStation Network message that rendered their console useless. Opening one of these messages bricks your PS4, forcing a factory reset in order to get it going again. It seems that the problem is widespread enough that Sony has caught wind of it, as it's currently working on a fix.
In an email to VG247, Sony stated: "We are aware of the situation and are planning a system software update to resolve this problem." Hopefully this will be made available soon to avoid too many people inadvertently breaking their consoles. In the meantime, there are a couple of ways you can work around the issue, which we detail in this article.

Yeah, they can't afford to have this issue lingering around too long. I imagine some people would be brewing up class-action lawsuits about this. Good on them for getting down to the task of fixing it. In the meantime, I turned off all messaging on my PS4.

Fair plays. I checked and redid my privacy settings again. Sign of the world we live in.. same people that grief other players are the ones who do rubbish like this.

I turned off my messaging long ago except for friends. I kept getting random friend requests from people I know I haven't gamed with. It seemed like people were fishing or maybe even bot related.
happy to see sony taking this seriously.
but then again that is what i expected since security is realy a serious thing for them.
It's only going to get worse as generations go onward. Some people have no lives and just want to hurt other people for no reasons at all. There's always viruses popping up on computers, Facebook, email accounts...and Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have had issues throughout since the 'online' days that consoles started. Glad I like the original systems of just slap in the disc or cartridge and play, without the usage of internet...Hey, can we go back to those days instead!!!!!!

Thanks Sony. I don't fault Sony like others might, this is something purely stupid and pathetic people do. If teleportation existed, these things would occur far less. Teleport and punch these bums in the face.

Being a woman gamer, kinda mandatory to have messages from Friends Only, so no worries here.
So wait, is it just the act of opening one of these infected messages that causes it, or is it opening some link that lies within it? This is the first I've heard of it.
@starhops i can kind of understand that, the amount of grief my missus gets on some games is terrible, it's like as soon as they know a woman is in the game some people either become really creepy or really nasty
@MysticMask from what i understand it's when you open the message the PS4 can't read it and it freezes the system
@FullbringIchigo I saw the article written on here before this one that explained it. Apparently you don't even have to open it up - the very act of the PS4 trying to display it in a preview is enough to crash it it seems. Which is a gigantic problem.
