What the heck is going on? So far this year Game Informer’s had God of War and Spider-Man cover stories, and now it’s following them both up with another PlayStation 4 exclusive, Days Gone. The publication travelled to Sony Bend’s secluded studio in Oregon to go hands-on with the mysterious post-apocalyptic game, and it’s come back with a month of coverage.
Deacon St. John’s biker-fuelled romp is in a strange spot; the game looks like an easy sell, but it’s also been largely overlooked by the most vocal of gamers. Game Informer even acknowledges this: “Does the world really need another zombie game? After spending a couple of days playing the game and gaining a deeper understanding of what the studio is trying to accomplish, we came back with an enthusiastic yes.”
There’s a coverage trailer embedded above with some brand new gameplay footage, showcasing some motorcycle action and numbers popping out of enemy hordes. We’re due more information over the coming days and weeks, as Game Informer plans to reveal much more about the title – both on its website and in the magazine itself. You can learn more through here.

I'm sure it will be brilliant. I suspect many are suffering from zombie apocalypse video game fatigue which would be understandable. Bit of an overused formula these days.
Already looks better than The Walking Dead TV show!!
@LieutenantFatman Yeah, I totally agree with you. TloU2 is coming too.
@LieutenantFatman How many open world zombie games are there on PS4 right now? Dying Light, Dead Rising 4, and... I'm struggling.
Days Gone looks awesome, you will fight a horde of zombies like World War Z and also motorcycles. Day one for me.
Surely it's a January/February title then, right?
I don't get the complaints, it looks pretty good gameplay-wise!
Awesome, seems like a perfect Q1 game. Can't wait to download the new issue!
@Octane I would guess so, yes. It was due out this holiday, but my guess is it got delayed to avoid Red Dead.
@get2sammyb If we remove the term 'open world' which won't mean much to a lot of people buying, and focus on survive the Zombie Apocalypse video game, suddenly you have dozens of games.
Maybe GI will drop the release date like they did with Spider-Man
@LieutenantFatman I'm not sure we do, though. Dying Light, The Last of Us Remastered, Dead Rising 4, Zombie Army Trilogy, Resident Evil 7, 7 Days to Die... Outlast?
All of those games are pretty different, too. I don't know, I see your point, but it's not nearly as saturated as people sometimes make out.
@LieutenantFatman But why would we remove the term "open world" from Days Gone when it's that very aspect of the game that separates it greatly from most zombie games?
The problem is this game is coming out, seemingly, in the same year as TLOUP2.
That'd be like Resident Evil and Silent Hill in the same year. A little too similar for most people, except here one is a well known name and the other is...well its main selling point is how they tried to sell the GameCube. Lots of stuff on screen
@YummyHappyPills I wished we could get a Resident Evil and Silent Hill in the same year.
This game looks great.im hype.i l💗ve bend studio.after that.give me syphon filter.word up son
@get2sammyb no it didn't get delay to avoid red dead.how many games this year and last year got delayed before.c'mon son.word
@get2sammyb What if they come out with a Battle Royale mode at E3? And they delayed the game for that reason alone. I've been thinking about it, the engine is already capable of rendering a lot of characters on screen..! I'd be more angry than Kratos during Spartan Rage if that were the case!
Zombies though (and these are not actually 'Zombies') are a fantastic choice for 'enemies'. They are great 'cannon fodder' and are singularly minded - not affected by having a limb blown off for example - relentless. It also allows for 'variation' as we get 'different' types of these.
The other real option is to go sci-fi with some Alien species that constantly and relentlessly chases after you until 'killed' outright. I know we also get Aliens that use weapons and then it becomes a 'war' game (like CoD or Battlefield) but with a sci-fi theme and potential to have more varied enemy types rather than just 'human' soldiers.
You could of course go with 'animals' like insects (ants for example) but I can't think of any other enemy types that would work in this way. Some people don't want 'sci-fi' settings or find the concept of shooting 'living' things to be unacceptable and sending the wrong message so killing the 'already dead' is not such an issue.
Anyway, if someone can give me an 'alternative' to the Zombie (whether its an actual Zombie or an 'infected' human that behaves like a zombie) without involving 'Aliens' then please do tell...
I am still very excited for Days Gone myself....
@deepspace5d Let's hope it does a bit more than that to stand out.
You can do a better list than that, Sammy! Here's a few more.
Dying Light
The Last of Us Remastered
Dead Rising 4
Zombie Army Trilogy
Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 0, 1, 4, 5 and 6
Resident Evil Chornicles
Resident Evil Revelations 1 & 2
7 Days to Die
Outlast
Dead Nation
Dead Island
Killing Floor 2
Call of Duty Zombie modes
Telltale The Walking Dead games
Zombi
Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2
Metal Gear Survive
And I'm certain there's a few dozen indie games that are zombie focused.
@LieutenantFatman Aside from it being open world, what drew my interest to Days Gone was the improvisational sandbox style where different people playing the same scenario can tackle the situation in completely different ways.
The motorcycle traversal mechanic is pretty unique as well.
@deepspace5d
Being able to solve problems in different ways does sound very impressive and fun. And being a lover of motorcycles, I was very excited when I saw that, I hope they make that part a lot of fun.
Personally I am very interested in this, was just pointing out a possible reason why it hasn't caught the eye of more casual gamers.
i'm worried bend studio might get shut down if this game does not perform well. it was a bad idea to introduce another zombie themed ip in the playstation stable and like many people have mentioned already, releasing this game in the same year as last of us 2 will make it all the more forgettable. thankfully it will release prior to last of us 2, but still. nobody asked for another zombie game... last of us gets away with it due to the incredible storytelling and characters as well as the "survival" and stealth slant it focused on. the fact sony has no idea how to market days gone is evidence that that game lacks it own unique identity and perhaps sony even lacks confidence in the game itself. i would have liked bend studio to revitilize the syphon filter franchise instead... hopefully that is what bluepoint is working on. even just a modern remake of syphon filter 1 would be very cool to see
@LieutenantFatman I don't think it's that many games, even with all the Resident Evil re-releases. It definitely feels like there are more, but in reality there aren't that many.
@get2sammyb Oh that would be amazing. Campy horror from one and the psychological from the other.
But. Konami... at least RE8 is likely.
@LieutenantFatman
I think your clutching at straws to make your point. I love dead nation but come on they’re not comparable. It’s a twin stick shooter, why not add alienation or nex machina if you going to try to compare apples to oranges
@get2sammyb I just wish we could get Silent Hill, full stop.
@gingerfrog
I was only comparing the settings.. and pondering why the upcoming game might not be getting much interest. No harm done I hope!
Day one for me!!!
@Orpheus79V Agreed.
@get2sammyb Totally agree. Actually, I would say most zombie games are twin stick shooters, silly spoofs, Shooter modes in games, or mobile.
Pretty sure this is much different. It's not like SONY have proven otherwise this generation. Their bar of quality is at an all time high. I don't expect Sony Bend to be any different when it comes to Days Gone.
Plus, Sam is fun! Time to be Starkiller again...Except on a motorcylcle. An no force powers. And no lightsaber...Or is there?
@Octane It would be interesting. SONY has been hard out on large scall online Multiplayer experiences though for the past few years. Sure, some games have online modes like Hot Shots. But they're not nearly as intense as MAG, Resistance, or Killzone as far as matchmaking is concerned.
I'm not against it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Sony 1st party studio is on fire this gen, we just got god of war, spiderman and detroid previews is great, and it seems days gone will be a good game too
@LieutenantFatman
Resident Evil 0 2002
Resident Evil 1 2002
Resident Evil 4 2005
Resident Evil Chornicles 2007
Resident Evil 5 2009
Dead Nation 2010
Dead Island 2011
Resident Evil Revelations 1 2012
Resident Evil 6 2012
Zombi 2012
7 Days to Die 2013
Outlast 2013
The Last of Us Remastered 2014
Dying Light 2015
Zombie Army Trilogy 2015
Resident Evil Revelations 2 2015
Dead Rising 4 2016
Killing Floor 2 2016
Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 2016
Resident Evil 7 2017
Call of Duty Zombie modes 2008-2018
Telltale The Walking Dead games 2012-2018
Metal Gear Survive 2018
I mean, that may seem like a lot, but the 2-5 zombie games a year trend has been pretty consistent for like 10 years. There's not more than their used to be, any more so than the dozens of indie games from any genre/theme. Survival games, there's dozens in a year, whether zombie or not. Shooters, we get at least 2 a year with EA/Activision, Racing Games, we're almost drowning some years...It's not unusual. Even if you were speaking specifically to horror, I'd disagree. But with zombies, it's even less so.
And let's be honest, there's a difference between PvZ and Resident Evil. One is actual Zombies, while the other could really be anything...That's just a cute skin, which while fun, isn't essential to the core mechanic of the game. Take Zombies out of RE, and the entire plot doesn't work, nor the world they've created.
Zombie's aren't a genre, true. But that doesn't mean it's reasonable to apply it to anything that says "zombies" in the title. Though I agree, I could see why public perception could be that there are "Too Many Zombies", it's not really accurate.
Seperating those by year, removing remasters/ports, and taking only games this generation...It doesn't look like that many per year, and that's without labeling the good/bad ones, or separating by gameplay genre. Cause Zombies, is just not a genre, it's a sub-theme to Horror.
Next Game informer cover should be ether Dreams or Ghosts of Tsushima
I wanted this game the first time I saw it but the second EA3 trailer really sold me I just hope it gets out this year would love it in November as I think it will need to be out a while before TLOU 2
Lots of good info in the article, still on the fence about it myself but sounds like it's shaping up to be another hit for Sony
@Areus At this rate it wouldn't surprise me.
Apparently Bend have job openings for a new "AAA PS4 exclusive" so it makes me wonder if this game is almost done but won't be out by October (hence why Sony have shifted it till 2019).
Also it's interesting that there looking for staff on a new game already, it tells me that either they have a lot of confidence in this that they want to fast track a sequel into production or they have another idea for a game and are moving onto that.
I'm still really excited for this. Think it's probably 3rd most anticipated game for me behind RDR2 and TLOU2.
@YummyHappyPills I guess you will be the only one in the world who would find something like that that a problem. 😁
@drd7of14
Fair point. Might be a bit more interesting if they mixed up a little more though, plenty of other fantasy style monsters to choose from out there.
@drd7of14 I just hate shooters and i even hate the zombiemode even more. 🤣
@Flaming_Kaiser Find what a problem? RE8? A new Silent Hill game (Konami sees that as a problem clearly) or both in one year?
Hey Joe you wanna play a Zombie game?
@BAMozzy I ‘appreciate’ your points.
Looks pretty sweet to be honest
@get2sammyb thank you people love to act like we are overflowing with zombie games when it’s the furthest thing from the truth. I think people subconsciously think of movie and tv shows where there is a lot of zombie stuff and that’s why they act like we have so many zombie games out there right now.
Still a doubter.
@DLB3 The last of Us will be more in common with games like God of War and Uncharted - linear story that just so happens to be more 'horror' based and has 'infected' as one of the enemy types - along with human.
Days Gone is certainly more like H:ZD but with 'hordes' of Infected instead of Robot dinos as the enemy type. I doubt LoU will have a day/night cycle, different weather that affects the behaviour of everything (at least not 'random'), I doubt it will be 'open world' and allow you to explore or use the various 'enemies' as a weapon against each other - like setting a horde onto an enemy camp - like setting a Thunderjaw against another Thunderjaw and other robot enemies like you can in H:ZD.
The only thing these have in common is that they both have bearded protagonists (if you play as Joel in 2) and have 'infected' humans as one of the enemies. Admittedly they do also have realistic artstyles too but you might as well say Far Cry is the 'same' as Battlefield because they both have first person shooter mechanics and vehicles you can fly/drive too with 'realistic' visuals.
Its as if someone saw a screenshot and assume that the entire game-play will be the same linear experience the Last of Us was.
I don't care the way the zombie horde moves, reacts, and in massive numbers makes this game Unique to me. I vote YES we need it.
@LieutenantFatman
No worries just thought I’d add my 2pence worth. I think because from the trailers the game looked more original than people gave it Credit for. Here’s hoping for another PS4 smash hit
@LieutenantFatman Almost everything is a remaster in the list plus a early access. 😁
@Flaming_Kaiser
True, there's a lot of remastered zombie games. Games refusing to die, just like the enemies within them.. How ironic.
@LieutenantFatman overused formula?Yet you love the boring dead oops I mean the walking dead
@Dreamcaster-X the boring dead oops I mean the walking dead isn't a zombie show it's a soap opera
@get2sammyb are you complaining?
@get2sammyb outlast is not a zombie game
@Undead21 I think you have me confused with someone else, I've never even watched a single episode of the TV programme. And the game for me was ok. Certainly not one that I loved.
@LieutenantFatman Totally agree. And I'm not saying some "series" haven't done enough to deviate from the traditional Zombie archetype, as movies have. We either get Romero or 28 Days Later Zombies the majority of the time. Like, Dead Rising and killing zombies eventually gets old. But if they're telling an engaging story, like TLOU, it's way more easy to forgive. Plus...They actually made significant changes to the "zombie" as an enemy.
Honestly, I lost my interest after what they showed last time. there is nothing interesting about this game. I can`t see new ideas, still looks like a clone of zombie games to me.
they have a chance to show something new at E3 like upgrade system(can you upgrade that motorcycle?! ) or ways to finish a mission.
@LieutenantFatman oh I see ok
