It’s the rumour that won’t stop running: the two Shenmue titles could be coming to the PlayStation 4 this year. Just like the Bayonetta and Vanquish double-pack we reported on earlier, a bunch of Eastern European retailers all seem to think that Yu Suzuki’s legendary Dreamcast adventures are coming to Sony’s current console this year, too.
While there is some disparity between the listings – and they're certainly not the first of their kind we’ve seen – it is interesting how a lot of online stores in the same general geographic area have put up similar product pages all at the same time. Have they gotten hold of genuine information, or is this all just coincidental guesswork based on popular rumours?
Personally, we wouldn’t be surprised if this is legit. There’s easy money to be made on some Shenmue remasters, and SEGA seems to be turning a corner with fan-focused projects like Sonic Mania. It’ll be interesting to see how newcomers respond to the original Shenmue titles, as they’re certainly showing their age these days – even if they are still beloved by many.

A Shenmue remaster had to be in the works, it's just the case of timing. It's pretty pointless putting 1 & 2 out while 3 is 2 plus years away after all.
@adf86 It's a weird situation, though, because Shenmue III doesn't really have anything to do with SEGA. Ys Net has licensed the franchise off them, but they're not involved.
A 1 & 2 remaster would be all SEGA. So while there'd be clear benefits to both parties to coordinate something like this, SEGA doesn't really have an egg in Shenmue III's race — apart from it being based on an IP that they still own.
What a strange tangle of events!
Waiting for the kickstarter announcement.
Anyhow, I'm sure this will be good since the original games were very much overlooked. Doubt they'll look so good. Probably have better faces than the 3 trailer.
My question is, how will people react to the QTEs?
This will be a day one buy if true. Always wanted to play these games.
@get2sammyb Could be that SEGA sees an opportunity to benefit off of the hype from Shenmue III. Shenmue is very topical now, remasters don't take as many resources as other projects, and at a time like this a Shenmue I & II remaster would probably sell pretty decently.
Like you said there are clear benefits to this for both parties. It's interesting to think about!
I'm really hoping it'll come to PS4. I've never played Shenmue before.
If this is true then I'll take it. Never played this series before.
Obligatory - I see.
Played the first, wasn't impressed. Would have played the second if it had come out on the Dreamcast in the US rather than just the Xbox.
Cant' imagine wanting to play either of them now. Even if they remade them in a modern engine like FF7R I still can't imagine them being all that good to people used to playing Uncharted, Horizon, Skyrim and Zelda.
But still, would be nice for alot of people, just not me, so have fun ya'all, I wish you luck.
@rjejr +1
I have little interest in Shenmue 3 right now because I've never played the first two games, so I would like to see remasters of the previous games.
I would love to see Shenmue 1+2 on PS4 and in all honesty I think it's obligatory when they bring the 3rd one - I loved the first one and never got the chance of playing the 2nd!
If this is real, it will 100% be a day one buy. I'll own physical, original versions of all the Shenmue games, since I own 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast, and ponied up enough to the Kickstarter to get that physical. Plus the second disc on Shenmue 1 is ruined and my copy of Shenmue 2, though mint, is European, and I only have an American Dreamcast, so this remaster would let me actually play them, which would be cool.
If you haven't played shenmue back when it was released you wouldn't understand how revolutionary the game was for its time. Many game elements that are common place these days started with shenmue and there are still few games which share it's love for detail.
Digital foundry made some awesome videos explaining what makes these games so special.

I'd be up for some HD forklift truck racing, yeah
@tameshiyaku Agreed, Shenmue 1 and 2 are among my favorite games of all time, it felt amazing at the time to play them on Dreamcast. (For one It was super immersive to just walk around and explore this small town at the beginning). Just wonder how it feels and plays now after all those years.
remastered at a decent price with both Japanese and English dub on BOTH games and i'll get them day one
Still remember playing the original and being amazed, walking for the first time into town was one of my top gaming memories, with what was for the time period a beautifully crafted environment.
There is a part of me that feels it should be left where it is though, as it will inevitably be criticised for its more basic feel, compared to modern day equivalents and I dont want to see it devalued in any way..
But I can see why it would be a good move commercially.
I've still got the originals on my Dreamcast, but if this means they'd be available in a sharper res and in widescreen then I'd happily buy them again. Nostalgia is such a big part of these games though - when they were released they were absolutely mindblowing.
While Shenmue was ahead of it's time, now it's a dated game.
So a simply remaster could be a problem.
That said I really want it to be real and I hope that Sega does a good job.
@get2sammyb Nevertheless their is some business sense in having the remasters out closer to 3. For me I just want the opportunity to play them.
Please be true. I am getting sick of asking for these.
Cant wait!
Would love to see it happen! A 2-pack retail release!!
