The worst thing about Star Wars Battlefront (apart from the absence of a single player campaign) was how it left so many players behind. Hop on the game today and – unless you’ve got the Deluxe Edition or stumped up for the Season Pass – you’ll see a wealth of maps, modes, and features that you can’t access. It’s antiquated in a world of Overwatch and Titanfall 2.
Good news, then: the sequel will let everyone access everything for free. All new content – including John Boyega’s character Finn – will be added for everyone without cost. Captain Phasma and The Last Jedi planet Crait will be included in a December update as well, alongside a new space map above D'Qar – all complimentary.
Of course, this means that EA is going to have to balance the books elsewhere, so expect microtransactions to play a big part; we’re not really bothered if they’re cosmetic like in other games. Potentially positive news, then, accompanied by a very flashy multiplayer trailer that looks the Wookie’s whiskers if we do say so ourselves.

I don't like the way they worded it. They claim the "first season of free content" which leads me to believe there will be other seasons with paid content. This is EA we're talking about, so I'd say it's too good to be true.
@RedMageLanakyn Hmm, surely not? They seem to not want to split the user base so I dunno why they'd do that after a few months.
But I didn't actually catch that for myself, so good ears! Bloody PR speak.
@get2sammyb Yeah the PR speak was pretty interesting. Boyega said Finn and Phasma were free in the "first season of free content" but the lead woman in the campaign said all post launch heroes, weapons, maps, and vehicles will be free. So i'm thoroughly confused.
If all of the DLC is free, then I'm happier that I missed out on the first game.
@RedMageLanakyn
What I am afraid of is that with all this talk of free DLC this will be like 1 all over again, with barebones content at launch and the rest coming later. I know they said three times the content, but how much of that is at launch?
@sinalefa That's possible. I think there will be more content though, both at launch and after, because they can draw off all the movies this time. Plus they can recycle maps from the first one.
I think this will still be barebones at launch except it will have a single player campaign. Personally, I think this will be rife with micro-transactions. They have to pay for that license somehow...
They HAVE to do it totally free (except off course the cost of the game). These type of games cannot stand the course of time if their community is divided. When you got a multiplayer game, you have to find a match in seconds, so there must be people playing this damn thing.
But It's certain that micro-transactions are on the way. And yeah, they HAVE to stay cosmetic. If they make a single one mistake (for exemple a killer lightsaber that can instantly OS anything), the balance of the game will be compromised.
I'm still waiting for more news from this game in the Microsoft and Sony press conferences. Like, I really really expect some VR, and more than just a mission !
The words 'FREE' and 'EA' don't normally go together
i imagine only multiplayer DLC will be free, i bet any extra single player content (such as added story) will be sold
