Following a false start earlier in the week, EA Games has now officially announced Star Wars Battlefront 2 for the PlayStation 4, and it sounds like every inch the sequel that the Dark Lord demanded. Packing a single player campaign, space battles, and an expanded multiplayer suite spanning three eras of Star Wars lore, it sure looks like developer DICE has been listening to its fans.
First up, that all-important single player will put you in control of Iden Versio, the commander of an "Imperial special forces unit equally lethal on the ground and in space". The blurb states that you'll come face-to-face with many famous faces, as you work your way through a campaign of "revenge, betrayal, and redemption that spans 30 years". Sounds pretty good, no? Even more impressively, the plot will be canon.
Of course, even with the addition of a story mode, it's the multiplayer that will always be at the beating heart of Battlefront, and the sequel's promising expanded multiplayer which will feature 40-player battles in "authentic locations across all eras". As previously mentioned, you can expect to commandeer characters from the original trilogy, as well as the prequels and the more recent films.
And yes, there'll be space battles. "Weave between asteroids, fly across Imperial Dock Yards, and take down massive capital ships," the official website explains. "Pilot renowned crafts like the Millennium Falcon or Luke Skywalker's X-wing in exciting dogfights with up to 24 players." This was easily the most requested feature for the original outside of single player, so it's good to finally have it added.
Last but not least, there'll be split-screen multiplayer for those that want it. The game's set to release on 17th November, but if you pre-order the Deluxe Edition, you'll get access three days earlier. Are you in or out? Wield the force carefully in the comments section below.

Great trailer!
i cant wait hopefully we will see some Gameplay soon
Looks like they've learned there lesson! Story sounds really interesting.
Hope it's longer than BF1's though. That was too short
ALL eras...but No clone wars(as yet)? ...wonder if they are using maul to represent the clone wars?
Looks great! I only hope we'll see other SP-focused modes like the one in the original BF2.
Did the previous BF game (the one two years ago) let you play large-scale battles as a single player versus bots, like in the old BF games?
Wow this looks like everything you could want from such a game. Those production qualities coupled with developers who are listening to the fans, we could be on to a winner
I am so in. Especially after they showed us their reverence for JK2utcast, I'm looking forward to that story!
Just adding space battles and a SP is only half the battle. The mechanics need an overhaul, the first one lacked depth, had no classes and vehicle combat was poor.
Edited: Just had a look at some new info. Criterion are handling the space battles (guess that means a full fledged VR game is out now) their will 4 classes: Rebel Fighter, Imperial Officer, Stormtrooper and Federation Droid , each has it's own progression system. Meanwhile the hero classes have their own careers so you can unlock new abilities. And it looks like the token system for getting heroes and ships are out, replaced by some kind of resource based system. And all trooper, hero and vehicle classes can be customised with new abilities, gadgets and skins.
Overall this sounds more like it.
OMG The Last Jedi Trailer and this! With E3 just under 2 months away! Truly spoiled lol
That is not Battlefront 2.
Two minutes of cut scenes. Wake me up when we get some gameplay footage.
We will see. I hated the first rebooted game, but maybe this one will be better.
I was critical of the first Battlefront game - still am but I must admit this is looking great. Still not sure about buying it for the MP yet as such as the last one was so shallow, but the SP looks very interesting. I will possibly buy it for that alone.
If the MP has much more depth - and I don't mean chucking in a few more weapons, character customisation and cards, but actual depth in the gameplay, this could be my MP of choice for 2017/18.
I must admit, at times I wondered if I was watching a trailer for the game or for a movie! Mind you the last BF was incredible visually (in most cases) but turned out to be all style no substance. But credit where its due, they have nailed the visuals!!!
Story is canon, eh? Heard that before, how long until they change their minds?
@adf86 It does sound as if they have taken onboard a lot of the criticism and whilst it sold well, must be aware of how quickly people abandoned the game. I am still not sure how I feel about the pre-order bonus of 'heroes' - I really don't think things like that should be offered as pre-order bonuses. Character skins are different and I have less issue with purely cosmetics.
One of the things I hated about the first was the pick-ups. Not only does it ruin the aesthetics - having those scattered about the environment - it meant that some people were more intent on getting to these or camping for the next spawn instead of actually playing the objective, being part of the team.
@LieutenantFatman i doubt they will, none of the old stuff was seen by Lucas as Canon (although he did nick ideas,he said so himself) so when Disney took over they took that stance too and has taken a pretty firm stance about canon since
besides the old EU was a mess of convoluted stories and dumb ideas, it had some great thing too but not as many as the bad
also the confirmed it on twitter if that helps
Single player ?
NOW I am interested.
With single player and an offline co-op mode this definitely has my interest. My kids are super into star wars right now so they would love this. Glad to see they listened to the feedback from the first one.
I skipped out on the first game, and I'm glad I did. This looks pretty good.
It's certainly making all the right noises. I wonder if the gameplay will be changed much? Not that I had a problem with it as such.
Anyway, it's looking promising!
The lack of SP did not kill the first one for me, but I appreciate it if they do it. Specially when you play as a bad guy.
Also, nice to hear splitscreen made the cut. Yesterday my bro and me came back to it after quite a while and it can be pretty fun. Count me in, definitely!
Better than that boring film trailer
Split screen multiplayer, prequel content and a story. Sounds like a large step up.
Sounds great, but I will be waiting for information on what is behind a paywall before I buy. Will also wait for a decent batch of critic and user reviews. Last time was just far too content lite. The split screen multiplayer is fantastic news though
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi Rather that then trailer that tells the whole plot.
@BAMozzy I agree, the tokens were a rank bad design choice, I would have took Battlefield in Star Wars skin at that point. At least with Criterion doing the space battles it does free up time and resources for Dice to put more into other areas.
@adf86 Already sounds as though Dice have put more into this. A better progression system - something they were also criticised on Battlefield 1 for so I would annoyed if they haven't learned from both of these - and of course Classes are returning - which instantly gives more depth to the game-play and hopefully more tactical and team orientated game-play too. I do hope they have learned on the maps too. A few Big maps for the 'big' battles with vehicles is not enough. I hope they make at least 8-10 and if they are 'too' big for smaller modes, just use a portion of these - its not unusual a method. It annoyed me we only had 4 'big' maps at launch - 5 after Jakku - which also didn't help the longevity...
Nice to see it.
And I told you theyd use single player as a selling point.
The trailer didn't do a whole lot for me, however I'm still really excited about this game
@BAMozzy It's also been confirmed that they will be no season pass either. Dice say for this type of game it doesn't work and that they need to come up with something better.
@adf86 I noticed that but if you still have to wait months for maps and only get 4 maps for the big mode(s) it could still be a sporadic game. People play for a week or two, get bored of the maps and then stop playing until the next map etc. If people end up just popping in sporadically, it can still die off - look at Titanfall 2 - another game with no season pass.
As far as I am concerned, its making all the right noises and really appears they have listened and learned from their mistakes. Its a game I will certainly be considering. The trailer and information has raised my interest a lot but I still feel burned from the last one to a degree. It will be playable at EA's E3 experience so will wait to hear more. It was a game I was thinking I may pick up just for the campaign when the price drops off, now I am thinking that maybe I will buy close to or at launch. The next few months may determine if I pre-order or not to get on day 1....
...although....
...Looking at the pre-order bonuses - quite a lot of 'Epic' abilities... I think that refers to loot/supply drops in the game instead - These are 'Epic' so I guess you will have supply drops to stand a chance of getting 'Epic' abilities but you could end up with common, rare or legendary ones instead. They are scrapping Season passes to double down on Supply/loot crates and you can 'earn' them without buying BUT the earn rate is so slow and all those who spend money have the best abilities and unbalance the MP... It becomes pay to win - instead of being split by who has the maps, its now split by who spent extra money and those that don't - no Bots because the ones that don't buy supply drops are 'cannon fodder' with better AI than Dice could programme...
So still may just buy for the Campaign at a later date!
I'll keep an eye on it, but definitely not a day 1 or month 1.
@adf86 The season pass didn't work because by the time the last DLC came out, very few were playing the game and the few of those that owned the season pass couldn't play the maps online as not enough to fill a lobby...
So, no more male protagonists in Star Wars?
Having the reflexes of a slug I quickly gave up on the last one. If the single player is good I'll pick this up on sale though.
@get2sammyb I just hope we don't have to have played the first Battlefront PS4 game to understand what the heck is going on in Battlefront II PS4.
Assuming that hasn't been answered by EA already, what are your thoughts on this particular matter Sammy?
@adf86 yep, star wars doesn't really need a trailer but it didn't really tell me anything, I thought it was a poor trailer as it was very stereotypical pew pew boom boom
Can't be bothered to scan the internet..... but is there no mention of VR content? I get the fact the space battles are done by the same company that did the VR 'experience' in the first one but you would think they would actually mention something?
The trailer looks good but my decision will be about how much I can play offline. I have no interest in multiplayer - I have never played online and I never will. I do not have the time to play and get good enough to make online worthwhile for me. If all all the online modes had an offline choice which AI instead of other people then I would jump in. But I think the case of the original was online or nothing.
A shame for me.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi
Don't be that guy.
BTW what is the problem of making a good single-player Star Wars game with a decent-enough storyline that doesn't focus on bloody multi-player, which, judging from the comments in here people got bored of very quickly?
The plot will be canonical. Space battles in the current game are ok but you shouldn't have to pay more to play them; I'm glad to see that they're doing away with the season pass!
@hi_drnick you know i noticed this too, ever since disney took over and put kathleen kennedy in charge of lucas film all the protagonists of the series have been women
now i don't have any issues with strong female characters because lord knows we need them but to not have any male ones is just as sexiest as not having any female ones
@FullbringIchigo
Total nonsense, it's about time female characters featured as much as male, they make up 50 percent of the population for goodness sake.
You claim Force Awakens had too many females however, while you had Ray as a key character, every other character was male, with Po, Kylo Ren and Fin all being key male characters. Just because you had 1 female in a dominant role your cry foul and bang on about some feminist agenda at Disney.
In Rogue One you again had one female lead character, with all the others being male. Just because these 2 female characters were perceived as main protagonists all the insecure males look for an agenda that isn't there.
@Lovespuds OK for one i NEVER said any of that if you actually read my comment you would see i said it was about time we had more strong women in films and stuff
what i did say is that since disney took over ALL of the PROTAGONISTS as in SINGULAR people the people the story revolved around have been women and that ISN'T equal representation same as in the original and prequel trilogy's where they were all men with very little female representation, that was also wrong
you can't have equal representation if only ONE side is represented and that is the same for BOTH sides of the fence
the fence needs to come down completely not have them jumping from one side to the other if that makes sense and in games it is so much easier just give a choice of either being a male or female character, Mass Effect does it and it doesn't impact on the story, then BOTH sides are represented EQUALLY AS THEY SHOULD BE!
@get2sammyb
Yeah, it rocked... Can't wait, just watched Rogue One.... Amazing...
I'm glad there's gonna be a single player campaign and across all eras, and it seems to be shaping up nicely. A bit cheesy but I guess it is Star Wars.
Great news I had Star Wars Battlefront pre-ordered until I fount it was all mulitplayer then I canceled my pre-order!
