At the ongoing Taipei Games Show – regarded by many as the biggest gaming event of the year assuming you live in Taipei – Sony Interactive Entertainment Asia general manager Hiroyuki Oda revealed some crazy sales numbers for PlayStation 4 hardware and software. Speaking at the event, Oda said: "Sales of PS4 exceeded 53.4 million units worldwide and the sales total of PS4's game software reached more than 400 million – 401.1 million." These numbers come as a surprise considering that the PS4 has literally no good exclusives.
That averages out at about 7.5 games per PS4, which is an impressive number considering that it doesn't include any games downloaded from the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection. Still, it's not like anybody downloads those games anyway, seeing as they're all indie trash. Interestingly, both the PlayStation 2 and the Wii – the two best-selling consoles of all time – sold less games when they hit 50 million hardware sales: 308 million and 353 million game sales respectively.
Mr Oda also apologised for the shortages of PS4 Pro and PlayStation VR systems over the past few months, as well as saying that the quality of virtual reality will only get better as technology improves. How many PS4 games do you own? Do you think PS4 sales are starting to peak? Offer your expert analysis in the comments below.

Scarily, I don't think software sales are peaking yet. I think this year (assuming everything that's scheduled to release makes it) will be a much bigger year.
I saw somewhere that the software sales attachrate is above the wii and ps2 who where both juggernauts
@Sanquine Correct: "Interestingly, both the PlayStation 2 and the Wii – the two best-selling consoles of all time – sold less games when they hit 50 million hardware sales: 308 million and 353 million game sales respectively."
I have over 150 ps4 games
I think that attach rate ratio may be slightly skewed by PlayStation Store. After all, you can buy a game for $0.99 these days, which didn't happen in the PS2 or even Wii days.
Still impressive, though.
@get2sammyb I think i have 10 physical games but like 15 or more digital games including for example doom. The ease of downloading should also been taken into account. I for instance dont go to shops that regular but with a push of a button when i go home i can have any game i want on my PS4.
@Sanquine Yeah, I've started to go more digital lately, too.
No good games? LOL! What are you even talking about?? It has Life of Black Tiger!!
@get2sammyb
Exactly! Although it's an impressive milestone to hit the 400million games, we mustn't forget that the indies who kinda replaced the Midway and THQ offerings are way cheaper and that prices of games are under extreme pressure these days. 5 million sold now means the same profit margin as 2 million sold back in the day, and that guesstimate might even be on the safe side.
Heavy hitters like FFXV, TF2, DE: M, DH2, GoW4, CoD: IW and BF1 () were being sold for half the RRP just a month or 2 months after launch, but are extremely expensive to make. The market is kinda fudged up at the moment, so attach rates in 2017 tell a totally different story than they did 15 years ago.
I probably own 75 games on my PS4 and Vita that I bought for less than $20, games that offer the same (or more) value as $60 games did back in the day. At first glance it looks like an excellent time to be a consumer these days, but I'm really afraid that the industry is heading for a fall in their 'race to the bottom'.
There are plenty of exclusives, more out later this year , some indie games are decent. I probably have less that twenty as I'm not a collector and mebe.70 digital. Must be close to 300 games out for ps4
Ive got 16 physical copies and about the same amount of digital ones - the digital ones are mainly indie ones and games bought on sale in the store
I think the PS4 will go on to outsell the PS2, seems to be no stopping it
Just got a PS4 Slim for Christmas, $218 at Target, who has time for indies?
On disc:
Skylandlers Imaginators Crash Ed, $38
FFXV $48
R&C $10
DQH1 $10
Uncharted 4 - free in bundle (for a $218 PS4 I consider the game free)
Rocket League $18
DragonBall Xenoverse 2 $25
Digital:
Lego Jurassic World $9.50
The Order 1886 $5
Knack $5
That's $175 for 10 "retail" games. That's why they sell so many.
Clearly, Black Tiger is rejuvenating the desire for people to get a PlayStation 4.
@Octane @AlphaJaguar I'm glad SOME people have managed to make the connection between Black Tiger and the PS4s success.
With great hardware and software comes awesome results.
I can confirm ps4 pro shortage in asia, ps4 pro asia/region 3 is unavailable in my country
Although there's ps4 pro usa/region 1 sold for $485 ish and ps4 pro europe/region 2 sold for $445 ish, but no warranty so I don't want to buy it.
I have about 12 games on disc and about 40 on digital.
I have 33 physical games and 74 digital games currently installed with about 200 other games on my purchased list. This is why I always question "why do I need an xbox, a Switch or a PC when I've got so much I can play to begin with".
I've got like 10 physical games, and 1 digital, and i have my ps4 since black friday, i want to have the most amount physicaly, i love having a collection.
Got:
dragon quest builders ( digitaly)
Physicaly
Unchated 4 (came with my ps4)
Evolve
Elder scrolls online (why did i buy this...)
Teraway
Gta v ( must have since it's allways no1 in sales)
Fallout 4
Ratchet and clank
Overwatch
Final fantasy xv
Watch dogs
The last 2 i'm still waiting or them to arrive trough amazon uk 😤 the way is looonngg... 😢
I currently have on tap about 70-75 physical games (although a friend is borrowing 3) and not counting the 3 new releases this week. On the digital side probably 10-15 mostly indie... Yea im sure Sony would like me to keep up my current rate of purchase.
It wasn't until last year that I thought Sony finally was able to bring it's tally of truly great exclusives up to a good number but there's plenty of third party games to pick up the slack so I'm not shocked the software numbers are so strong. Will be interesting to see how this year goes since there is a healthy number of both great exclusives and multiplats but the competition is coming with new hardware.
Ahahahaha 😃 loved the "no good exclusives" links...
@johnny30 according to Wikipedia 1316 games on PS4 and I think Colin on Kinda Funny on a episode of Colin Was Right thought in the USA their are 1200ish games on PSN.
On what I own:
24 physical PS4 games
65 digital PS4 games I bought / been given codes for to review (some maybe cross-buy with VITA)
5 physical PSVR games
15 digital PSVR games I bought / been given codes for to review
5 PS2 Classics
Total 114 then all the PSN+ games over the past 3 years
An average of 8games per console... WOW! I expect that MANY must have just 1-2 games at most as I know quite a few have bought a lot more than that (inc me). I have bought (on average) 8 PS4 games a year (I also buy games for XB1 so my average games bought per year is higher than 8) and 2016 was a quiet year for me in general.
We all know that the PS4 has some decent exclusives and of course Uncharted 4 was for many critics (let alone gamers), the Game of the Year. Personally it was my GotY too and best exclusive. I wouldn't say R&C was the 2nd best exclusive released - not wiith Forza Horizon 3 and Gears 4 released but its still a fun game and appeals to a different target audience to XB1's exclusives.
Considering these consoles have been out for 3yrs though, I had expected the software sales to be a bit higher. It still surprises me that some people don't own many games - unless of course their library is predominantly pre-owned.
I've counted a bunch of exclusives for the system...MLB 14-16, Akiba's Trip, Ratchet And Clank, Uncharted's, Last Of Us, Last Guardian, The Order, Bloodborne, Until Dawn's, VR Titles, Little Big Planet 3, Gravity Rush, Tearaway Unfolded and many more...don't get why people say they have no exclusives, because they basically have as many as Wii U does, and Wii U is 4 years old...and with the amount of exclusives coming out this year, it has no excuse for people to say that anymore. Other than that, can anyone tell me if the sales of the PS4 has surpassed the Wii or PS2 now...it's got to be close if it hasn't!
Back to the other question, I own 58 retail games and 82 downloads...yup, I love the system, and I feel, as an older gamer that's been around since the Atari era, that it feels like a console like the Genesis and NES...lots of games and a great variety of them! There's a number of genres and variety to make it a great system!!!! I've been a nintendo fan for a long time, but ever since the PS3, I've fallen in love with Sony more!!!
I thought the Wii's attach rate was at 8.something around 3 or 4 years ago, and apparently not including eShop sales.
Pretty impressive, but yh massive discounts and 'low budget' games will lead to greater sales. Excluding PS+ titles, I own:
-50 retail PS4 games- would be more but I've traded in a few
-43 digital PS4, PSVR and PS2 classics
-90+ PSVita games
I better stop buying and start playing....
I'll be picking one up this summer so that number should go up more!
