Resident Evil 7 was announced at Sony's 2016 E3 press conference today in a trailer that can only be described as traumatic and terrifying. In definitely unrelated news, this particular writer may or may not have had to leave the room while the video was playing to attend to some very real and not at all made up business.
The game is played in first person, and can also be enjoyed entirely in PlayStation VR. We use 'enjoy' in the loosest possible sense there. Oh, and there's a demo available tonight for PlayStation Plus members. What do you make of Resident Evil 7? Will you be picking it up when it launches on 27th January ? Let us know in the comments section below.

Highlight of the conference for me. I wanted VR announcements and this was a good one.
Just watched this (couldn't be around to watch the conference live, unfortunately, so I'm watching it now on youtube). I was utterly FLOORED by this. Looks more like P.T. than classic Resi, but they're FINALLY going back to the horror genre with the series. I am so stoked.
Has the demo gone live yet for anyone?
@Constable_What Still isnt live on my system. Hope it actually goes up tonight
I'm sooo hyped for it! I played every single main(and revelations) games in the series and even though I would have love to know what happen after Resi 6(with the organisation and all) but that trailer litterally gave me goosebumps when they showed the VII !
woww.why is it first person.this is not resident evil.
Yes!!!!! I'm curious though... Is it a reboot? Or where in the hell does it take place in the Resi timeline?! Also, why am I not seeing the demo on the store?!?!?!
I'm fine with Resident Evil games taking drastic left turns as long as they're willing to fully commit to it. Even if I think it led the series down a terrible path, I still think Resi 4 was an awesome game, and I'm excited to see what this new, horror-centric style of gameplay yields.
This was the best part of the conference for me. They seem to be taking Resi back to its horror roots and completely changing the dynamic of it. Resi needed it and I'm seriously excited about this. Of course, I'm going on holiday now so won't get to play the demo, but I can live with that.
Moment of speculation: Guillermo Del Toro and/or Junji Ito is involved. They were both working on Silent Hills and I thought just maybe...
What? Resident Evil is now a horror game again, yes please and in VR, I might have to get one of these things after all
@Ralizah
It's great they're going back to the horror roots, no doubt about that, but I didn't really get a classic RE feel from it. I actually thought before it was revealed to be Resident Evil 7 that it was The Evil Within 2.
Anyone know what that song is?
@DM666 terrible?
Demo is live in the U.S. now, file size is close to 3 GB.
@themcnoisy quite like it actually!
I thought the house looked like the one from the texas chainsaw massacre. Was quite surprised to see the Resi title. Looks like my kinda game though, especially the VR aspect
Just played the teaser - like the new direction and excited to see how capcom will incorporate that signature RE of old. Definite Texas Chain Saw Massacre vibe. I can see other fans calling foul though.
Played the demo and my message to Capcom is it has my attention now please do not screw this up. The horror focus is there and first person may actually benefit the game. We'll have to see. Many, I think, will write it off because it's not traditional Resident Evil but I'm taking the cautiously (this is the modern Capcom afterall) optimistic approach. It does seem to be bringing back the scares and that is a big plus in my book.
@Churchy I did not watch the Sony conference because I was sleeping, but if I had watched it, RE7 (which is not PS4-exclusive, by the way) would have been my favourite moment of the show, too! Very excited about this back-to-horror RE!
I am wondering, since VR needs to output double frames, are those VR-compatible games downgraded when you are using VR?
@VanillaLake I think what was great about it was the fact that there was no fanfare, they just played another video: a great cryptic horror game filled with atmosphere and building tension. All the time I was thinking - this is great, I wonder what this is?
Then it pulled out revealed VII in Roman numerals, and then the rest of the title came in. I started cheering and then crying.
Trailer was crap but despite this I'm filled with gullible excitement.
@Churchy Looks like I'm not the only classic Resi fan here. The logo is great indeed, but I think the song took all the horror away. I know it won't be playing in-game but it's not the best way to introduce the game, in my opinion.
With REmake 2 in the works, if only Capcom re-released RE3 and Code Veronica for the current generation we would have all main RE games on PS4/Xbox One! Please...
I liked it - back to the roots and I have a feeling by the title that it will tie somehow into the Resi Evil universe but explore different monsters.
Will they also stock adult sized nappies with these horror games on PS VR?
but resident evil is not first person
Looks scary which is a first for Resi in a long while
vR version of this and I'll need to take a break constantly fir new underwear ha-ha. Will buy tho lol.
This demo was really really boring in my opinion. The sound was really good, but if the game is like this I don't see myself enjoying the full release. I'm kind of disapointed with it actually, but to be honest I don't know what I was expecting.
