Okay, so if you didn't already know, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege is getting a year's worth of free downloadable content. Maps, new characters, and so on will be released bit by bit over the next 12 months - and that's pretty cool. Ubisoft's tying a season pass into the equation, though, which complicates things ever so slightly.

Unlike what we'd usually expect from a season pass, this one doesn't offer any kind of extensive content packs or expansions. At most, in terms of additional content, it'll throw a few weapon skins at you. However, players who do purchase the pass will have an advantage in that they'll be able to earn renown more easily.

Renown is essentially experience, allowing you to unlock guns and playable operators as you rank up. Nabbing the season pass gives you a 'permanent boost' to the amount that you receive, and also gives you access to extra daily challenges, allowing you to grind for renown more efficiently.

What's more, season pass holders get to play as the aforementioned DLC characters a week before everyone else - and they don't have to manually unlock them.

We're not sure how to feel about this. On the one hand, season passes can offer good value when you're being provided with big expansions, for example, but on the other, many season passes are simply stuffed with meaningless crap. Rainbow Six: Siege doesn't seem to provide either - it's almost like the sort of bonuses that you'd expect when buying your way into a free-to-play title.
