Sony recently sent out a survey regarding future PlayStation 4 firmware update features, and it mentioned the oft-requested online notifications. Now, speaking on PlayStation France's Twitter account, Worldwide Studio's president Shuhei Yoshida has hinted that the functionality may not be too far away.
"That's a very, very popular question," he enthused. "Lots of people ask for the feature, and our engineers have been working to enable it in the future." There's no time frame just yet, then, but it's safe to assume that this shouldn't be too far off. Are you one of those that's been asking for it? Let us know you're online in the comments section below.

Personally speaking this feature just isnt a big deal, there are other more important features sony should be working on, Hope there is a disable option
@teknium_ To be honest, I'm with you on this one.
i must be one of the few that hasn't missed a box popping up in the corner making an annoying sound whenever a friend comes online, i remember one time when a friend had a problem with his wireless router his PS3 kept signing him in and out for a hour, that was a hour of a notification pinging in the corner over and over
it soon annoys you and i haven't missed it at all
That's great. It's 2015, can I get my external harddrive support, please!?
@Gamer83 that would be nice because even though you can put up to a 2TB HDD in it there is nothing wrong with even more room
Myself and some of my friends miss this feature. It was a great feature on the PS3. It's great to see a friend jump on and maybe switch games and join them. Apparently enough people must be requesting it since they are now announcing they are working on it not long after the surveys were sent out.
Yay awesome cant wait I would have rathered going invisible more but hey this is something i really wanted too
@Gamer83 that's what I'm saying man!
Really looking forwarding to having this back! Big feature that's missing in this generation.
For the people who don't like it, I'm sure under notification settings they'll have the option to turn if off.
When did software developers become "engineers"? Must have been the same time us folk who draw Visio diagrams of computers and networks became "architects". (I am an IT architect)
That's the first thing I would turn off, I find it very annoying.
I understand why people ask for these things to be added, but for me only one is important. External HD support, even if that means it has to be a proprietary drive from Sony that is a little over priced compared to other drives. I know I can just swap out the internal drive, but I like PT to much for that, maybe a little to much. Make this happen Sony, it truly is my one and only complaint about the ps4, otherwise I love how responsive and snappy the UI is and all the features we already have.
BTW, I really dont understand the obsession with getting folders, I have yet to run into a need for them and I own ALOT of ps4 games.
This is a feature that should of been there day one, it can't be that hard to add it in.
@SonyInfinity I upgraded to a 2TB internal HDD for £50, and I still have P.T.
All you need to do is backup before swapping drives, and restore after.
If you don't have a big HDD to back up to, just delete everything except P.T (and maybe your saves) and then do a backup of that which probably wouldn't exceed 10GB. You'd just need to redownload/reinstall all your games after.
@teknium_ I totally agree with you
I wonder how many requests for this have come from Japan and Europe compared to how many requests have come from America. In Japan where mostly they'll be playing RPGs and other single-player games, I can't imagine anyone really wanting a notification saying "Tanaka has just signed on..." coming up in the middle of an emotional cutscene. "Hideki says 'lol u kill all de slimes yet mang?'" while playing DQXI. Yeah, sounds great. It's much more based around people who sit there all day playing CoD.
Reminds me of when I had an Xbox and pretty much every day some guy would message me and ask if I wanted to chat, someone I'd just played Gears or Halo with. They were always American. I used to get it on Steam too when I'd play FPS more. Always American. I guess there's a lot of lonely guys over there. Of course, I'm sure many Americans don't give a crap about it either, I'd just put a lot of money on the fact that's where the bulk of the requests for this come from.
It's a great feature and should have been there since day 1. The PS3 had it, so why not the PS4. Sack the manager of the UI team; not one feature requested by millions of users for the UI has been implemented....
@blah01 I glad the feature isnt there and i dont miss it one bit Matroska has the best reason why i dont miss it.
I loved not having it ping i dont miss it at all i only have friends in my list i like to talk 2 anyway. I just always log on look fast look who is online and say hi or play together.
I found this feature irritating on the PS3 :-/ But was surprised the PS4 didn't have this feature tho(& other basic features to) So i really HOPE the PS5 has all the PS4 basic feature(& future features) ready from DAY 1 because it's getting boring having to wait now each Gen for this basic stuff.
@blah01 agree, there are a lot of options we should have that are seemingly basic. and I emphasize options! If someone doesn't want it, they should be able to disable it.
@wittypixel
Exactly.... People have been asking for two years now......
@blah01 yeah, but honestly if these UI improvements come in the next 2-3 months I would be completely ok with that
@wittypixel
Yep, also transparent folders would be great, just like Android, after all the PS4 is a Linux box....
Linux Box, where did you hear that from? and yeah that would be cool.
