Killzone: Shadow Fall

Guerrilla Games refused to reveal anything but pure gameplay footage during February’s big PlayStation Meeting press conference. The studio – which has been taken to task for misleading trailers before – insisted that it showed a live demonstration of Killzone: Shadow Fall, even shunning traditional back-up videos in the process. That led to a lot nail biting across the company's native Amsterdam, as the developer only managed to squash a handful of crucial glitches the day before the reveal.

“We fixed three bugs in the last day that were very, very rare and only happened like once in a hundred playthroughs, but we knew that three of those bugs were in there,” technical director Michiel Van Der Leeuw told EDGE. “So theoretically, there was like a three in a hundred chance of a crash. I was very nervous seeing Steven [ter Heide] playing on stage, and a lot of coders here in the Amsterdam office watching the live-stream were also really, really nervous.”

Elsewhere in the interview, managing director Hermen Hulst explained that Shadow Fall represents a new era in the ISA’s ongoing struggle against the Helghast. “Where in the past we took inspiration from World War I and World War II type conflicts, this very much is a cold war setting, so you saw the city divided by this wall,” he said, adding that the change resembles the franchise’s progression moving onto the PS4.

As for the decision to return to Vekta City – a location that hasn’t been explored since the original Killzone – the developer felt that the location provided the perfect opportunity for the team to flex its muscles. “We certainly picked a setting that allowed us to show off things like what we can do with lighting and reflection,” Hulst added. “But most importantly, we just wanted to make something that was truly beautiful that shows off what our designers can do and what our artists can do.”
