Retail software sales in the UK smashed records last week – by sinking lower than they’ve ever sunk before. MCV reports that 394,688 games were sold during the seven day period, generating just £8.4 million.

It’s not entirely surprising that the figures dipped so dramatically – the games industry is essentially on holiday, and there’s a little event called the Olympics dominating the airwaves. Still, the UK industry has been struggling all year.

At least retailers have the imminent release of Assassin’s Creed III, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Call of Duty: Black Ops II to look forward to. If that doesn’t improve things, the Mayans may have had a point about 2012.
