Japanese Sales Charts: PlayStation Vita Holds Steady As 3DS Dominates

At this point in time, there's no chance of any system catching up to the Nintendo 3DS in Japan, so there's no point in even discussing it

The PlayStation Vita started 2012 steadily, but the Nintendo 3DS crushed everything.

Nintendo might have seemed "doomed" after a disappointing 3DS launch last year, but it's now conjured up a triple threat of unstoppable software releases. There's nothing anyone can do.

As a result, a quick glimpse at this week's Japanese hardware sales chart tells you all you need to know: the Nintendo 3DS outsold the PS Vita by roughly six times. The good news is that the PS Vita stopped its decline, selling 42k units and even getting a subtle boost over last week.

The PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable both saw new year jumps too, with the systems selling 74k units and 71k units respectively. In all it was a strong week for the PlayStation family, even if the Nintendo 3DS managed to outsell all of Sony's systems combined.

There were no major new software releases for the week, so the chart was, again, dominated by Nintendo titles. Musou Orochi 2 on PS3 finished in fifth, while Final Fantasy XIII-2 maintained its respectable performance in seventh.
