In Saros, one tool in your arsenal that'll become essential later on is the parry. How does parrying work, and when can you do it? As part of our Saros guide, we're going to explain how to parry.

How to Parry in Saros

Parrying in Saros is not unlocked until you're a fair way into the game.

After exploring Blighted Marsh and progressing through it enough, you will be able to talk to the NPC there and they will unlock the parry ability for you. From that point on you can use it whenever you like.

To parry, tap R1. It's the same command as your melee strike.

Parrying allows you to hit red "Nova" projectiles that cannot be dashed through or absorbed by your Shield.

When close enough, simply press R1 to melee strike one of these red projectiles, and you will perform a parry.

Parrying clears nearby projectiles and can stagger or even damage enemies with the resulting shockwave.

It's an essential part of your kit, especially as you head into the latter half of the game, so make sure to master it.

How to Get Better at Parrying in Saros

Although parrying can seem a bit scary at first, it's actually pretty forgiving in Saros.

As long as you are close enough to a red projectile that you can make contact with it using your melee strike, you will perform a parry.

From our experience, the whole melee strike animation can parry; what we mean by that is, it's not really a matter of timing, you just need to physically hit the red projectile while using the melee attack.

Certain attack patterns from enemies will come at you pretty fast, and once the parry is unlocked, they may contain red projectiles. It's worthwhile practicing your parries whenever possible so you're familiar with these attacks and how fast they are.

Again, the window in which you can parry is fairly large, so it's more about understanding the attack patterns of each enemy so you can anticipate any red attacks and prepare to strike them back.

If you want to practice the distance at which you can parry red projectiles, there are some hazardous "walls" or "floors" of them that don't target you directly. Using these, you can judge how close you need to be for a parry to connect.
