As you explore the world and the locations that make up Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you'll collect hundreds of Colours of Lumina. Their use becomes apparent later in the game, but early on, their function isn't very clear. This Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 guide reveals how to use Colours of Lumina.
How Do You Use Colours of Lumina in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?

For roughly the first five hours of the experience, Colours of Lumina cannot be used. They'll build up in your inventory as you collect them, but you can't actually do anything with them yet.
It's not until Maelle joins your party, which happens at the end of Flying Waters, that their function becomes apparent. In addition to Maelle, another character called The Curator will join you. The mysterious figure can be interacted with when you make Camp on The Continent, and they take Colours of Lumina.

You can distribute Colours of Lumina to your party members, which can be spent on unlocking new Lumina effects.
Luminas are effectively the special effect of a Picto that you can equip on all your characters, and you spend Colours of Lumina to activate them. This is all done from the menu at The Curator, so wait for it to join your party and then Colours of Lumina can be used.
