BioWare may have lost its edge over the last few years, but Dragon Age: Inquisition is still one of the best Western RPGs on PS4. Its main draw is its great cast of characters, every single one of them bringing something different to the table. Publisher: NIS America / Developer: Nihon Falcom
Release Date: 22nd Oct 2019 (USA) / 22nd Oct 2019 (UK/EU)

The third instalment in the Trails of Cold Steel series, Trails of Cold Steel III requires prior knowledge of the first two games to fully enjoy, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the best Japanese RPGs on PS4. Protagonist Rean Schwarzer, now an instructor at a newly constructed military academy, forges fresh bonds with an all-new Class VII as he and his students journey across the Erebonian Empire. Expertly paced, the game juggles quieter character moments with bombastic anime action and a hugely rewarding battle system. The result is an expansive, engrossing JRPG that fans of the genre simply should not miss.

Character creation is meaningfully in-depth, and every action throughout your adventure further defines your hero. As far as player choice goes, Larian's sequel is one of the very best titles on PS4, and the many paths that you can take make it a brilliantly replayable package.

17. Final Fantasy VII Remake

Publisher: Square Enix / Developer: Square Enix
Release Date: 10th Apr 2020 (USA) / 10th Apr 2020 (UK/EU)

Square Enix actually did it. It actually remade Final Fantasy VII, and the result isn't a complete disaster. In fact, Final Fantasy VII Remake is a fantastic action RPG. It may not cover the whole story of the original, but it greatly expands on characters, themes, and plot points included in the Midgar arc. Its crowing achievement is its outstanding combat, which blends real time movement and action with time-pausing command menus. It feels like the evolution of Final Fantasy's classic Active Time Battle system, and it's amazing. What a time to be alive.

Publisher: SEGA / Developer: Yakuza Studio
Release Date: 13th Nov 2020 (USA) / 13th Nov 2020 (UK/EU)

A completely different approach in terms of gameplay, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a turn based RPG that takes heavy inspiration from the likes of Dragon Quest. For the first time in SEGA's main series, Kazuma Kiryu is stripped of his duties as a protagonist, replaced by the supremely endearing Ichiban Kasuga and his party of crazy characters. While the adventure still has story ties to previous entries, Like a Dragon is something of a rebirth — and it's fantastic fun.
