Hello there!

I found someone who sells used PS2 games and I would like to buy some as I just bought an HDMI adapter and new memory card for my old console (although I am yet to make it work, but that's a different discussion), but I am a bit reluctant about this for a certain reason.

Do you know if they are safe to play or is there a possibility they could have a virus? The last thing I would want is to virus my console. Other than that, are there any other reasons against playing used games if they have no scratches?

Thanks!

You should be good to go with playing them on your (I presume the PS2?) game console. Used PS2 games are perfectly fine to play with as long as they can load properly. If you're still cautious you could ask them to test them in front of you to be certain they'll work.

@InsaneWade Indeed, it's a PS2 that I still need to make work again. The person who sells them says they are working perfectly, but I just wanted to be sure that the discs are not susceptible to being virused or having any other stuff and ruin my console. There is no possibility to test them before buying.

Used games will not carry any virus.
A rotten disc will simply unreadable by the machine.
I bought used games frequently and never experienced with virus that can ruin the video games system.
It's not like virus inside flashdisk that will ruin your PC once get inserted.
Make sure the disc condition is as smooth as possible, less scratches because the scratches will affect with the lens.
I have The Sims 1 PS2 in used condition and still working perfectly like new on my PS2 Fat.
The game itself was already 21 years old (released in year 2002) and being able to play 20+ years old games was really incredible experience.

@Anti-Matter Thank you! I intended on making sure there are no scratches, and the explanation you gave here about it will make me be extra attentive to this. I love playing older titles, even if some of them have been remastered in the meantime and have new versions, and how this takes you on a beautiful nostalgic trip.

@Bubu5000 The only way they would be susceptible to viruses is they are ROMs downloaded from the internet and are on a flash drive or burned disc. If they are used licensed PS2 games on disc then you don't have anything to worry about.

@Tasuki Thank you! Just another question I have: the same goes also for PSP games?

Every original games you purchased, doesn't matter brand new or used condition, they are safe to play in your machines as long no scratches or fungi spot on the disc, even PSP.
I bought a lot of used games from different machines and all of them working perfectly.

@Bubu5000 As long as it's an actually published game, you don't need to worry about viruses. Only if they are pirated games do you.

Also, to add to this, I'm pretty sure PS2/PSP can't get viruses anyways as they're not like PCs. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

And if your game does work in a PS2/PSP, you can assume that the game is original and not a fake. I'm pretty sure those consoles, unlike some Nintendos, won't play fake games.
