Good direct - Links Awakening is cool, one of the two games I actually completed on my Gameboy (along with Pokemon Blue). I’ll be glad to play it on Switch.
I'm a fairly big Fire Emblem fan, although very much appreciate the flaws of Awakening and Fates, and the only other game I've played in the series is Sacred Stones, which definitely has my favourite plot of those I've played, but the gameplay of Fates: Conquest definitely takes the cake in map design department and overall difficulty. This trailer really gave me hope just due to the amazing world building in it already, something which Fates sorely lacked, so hopefully Intelligent Systems have learned from their mistakes and we're going to get an excellent game!
This got me pretty excited for Switch this year. I haven't played it much since Smash (though I picked up Fishing Star World Tour recently which is pretty fun), but with Yoshi, Daemon X Machina (still need to try the demo), Boxboy, Astral Chain, Marvel UA3, Mario Maker 2, & Link's Awakening there's quite a bit to keep an eye on. Definitely jealous of DQXIS too (I just beat the PS4 version, so I really can't see myself grabbing it anytime soon).
While I'm still on my Direct high I may go ahead and finally order NSMBU Deluxe (I got a Walmart giftcard for my birthday that I haven't used yet, so I won't have to pay full price for it).
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
I think Link's Awakening looks perfectly fine. I has indeed a plastic-y feel to it, but that's the intention I think. As if it were a miniature plastic toys fighting each other. I definitely prefer this over Link Between Worlds. And with all the insects and animals moving on screen, it doesn't feel lifeless either. The only thing I'm worried about is Nintendo charging €60 for this!
I've also been thinking. This year is pretty back loaded for the Switch assuming nothing gets delayed. With Yoshi in March or April, the rest of the year gets Mario Maker in June, Fire Emblem in July, followed by Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, and that Town RPG.
Thought the direct was absolutely stellar. Zelda, Mario Maker 2, MUA3, Dragon quest builders 2, D x M are all definite purchases. Already addicted to Tetris 99 and the Yoshi demo is great fun too. Add in the dlc for Captain Toad and Starlink. They definitely lost me for a good 10 minutes with all the fire emblem/jrpg stuff but outside of that couldn't have hoped for and more.
@Octane I'm still planning on playing through Bayonetta 1 and 2 at some point so that might affect my opinion on Astral Chain. It was certainly very anime-esque.
Mario Maker was one of the games that made me want a Wii U, not so much because I am a massive platformer fan but I love the ability to have all the different Mario generations at your finger tips, bearing in mind all the hours i spent on Super Mario Bros on the NES. In fact, it is probably the sound effects that sold me most!
Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot
I am certainly excited to learn more..as prompted several times throughout to be so.
Being honest, nothing really excited me with my heart of stone. Mario Maker 2 could have been a deluxe version, Link's Awakening remake's artstyle didn't resonate with me and seems a little lazy to be honest. The rest were things I can experience in better quality on PS4 as not a portable gamer (minus the obvious). Hate to be a negative nancy, but was hoping for more. Even the rumoured Starfox racer turned out to be Starlink DLC. I think I would have been more accepting if these Directs weren't so hyped all the time. Can't move for "Direct Predictions" over at NL. Usual disclaimer that I'm happy for those who did enjoy what was shown.
Edit: Fire Emblem was my highlight. Can't wait to see more of this and liked the story concept and its approach to training/levelling units (students?).

I don't think the rumour referred to the Starlink DLC. It specifically stated that Retro Studios was working on a Star Fox racing game. That rumour could be true, or complete BS, and I'm leaning towards the latter to be honest.

@Octane Haha I guess I can’t.
To be fair I watched the direct at 2x playback speed, so those games all started blending in together 😂.
