@Ralizah It’s a combination of the two, they’re very simple games and I do think there’s less of a place now for those arcadey Atari-style games now than back when they launched. Bit.Trip Saga on 3DS is alright but definitely shows that just with a fresh lick of paint, the gameplay loops are mostly fun enough to stand up today.
Since I've last posted (it's been awhile), I've completed Tales of Berseria & Final Fantasy VII Remake (just today!) on PS4, as well as Waifu Uncovered (somewhat embarrassed to admit that one, lol) on Switch (though I'm closing in on the end of Shantae & the Seven Sirens on that front as well).
Will post in depth thoughts in the Impressions thread.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
@KratosMD I put my thoughts on it in the review thread a while ago and I thought it was a clever idea which was reasonably well done but had some quite frustrating moments.
Cuphead on PC. It's tricky, but it's very good. Visually it looks wonderful. The 30's animation style is stunning. The character designs have a lot of creativity, making each boss fight feel unique.
Cuphead is a tough game, but it's a good sort of challenge. It's tough but fair, there's very little in the way of cheap deaths. Bosses may seem impossible to defeat at first, but they're usually alright once the player has had some practice and gets used to their attack patterns. A progress meter pops up whenever the player fails, showing how close they were to winning. This helps the player to see how much they're improving, and thereby giving them encouragement.
Overall, it's an excellent game. The developers have clearly poured a lot of passion into it.
Beat The Evil Within there. I have no idea what the hell anything means but it was an enjoyable ride from start to finish. It went a wee bit Resi 6 towards the last few chapters but otherwise it absolutely delivered. I honestly thought I’d just play it on cruise control so that I could go onto the 2nd one, which I’ve heard is way better but I enjoyed it a whole lot more than everyone else seems to have. Learned during the credits that apparently the main character was voiced by Anson Mount, which I totally didn’t realise and the ending song was by Gary Numan, also very strange. Amazing that it took until chapter 15 to hear the second half of Clair de Lune, you hear it on repeat the rest of the game. I’d definitely recommend it though, it’s one of the best horror games I’ve played from the last couple of gens.
@nessisonett Yeah it is one of the games on my NOW list, along with the second game. Didn't realise Anson Mount voiced the main character. Loved him in Hell on Wheels.
@crimsontadpoles Another game I keep meaning to pick up. Might just wait until it comes to PS4 if the leaks are true.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
I got Resident Evil 3 on sale and completed it the next day. It's generally fun but I miss the backtracking and learning the maps. It's not a Resident Evil game in my eyes as there's no real puzzles or staying in one area. It's very linear and the layout is more akin to later FF games ie run forward. It's also ridiculously short. I don't rush games yet this was still complete in 4 and a half hours.
I managed to somehow beat Carrion in a couple of sittings. I spent maybe about 6 hours on it? It was pretty good, movement felt satisfying and the atmosphere was great. It’s more of a puzzle game than a Metroidvania though, every encounter was a puzzle to solve rather than having a strict ‘fighting style’. It’s not the best game I’ve played and I felt like a bit of a sicko over the mindless killing but it’s decent enough.
@nessisonett Nice. I enjoyed the demo I played last year, although I could see the game getting repetitive. I don't know if they adjusted anything in the final build, but those drone enemies were quite annoying.
Currently Playing: Resident Evil Village: Gold Edition
@Ralizah Yeah, the section I was stuck on the most was a bit with loads of the wee drones. Because you can’t grab them directly, having to chuck debris at them was quite fiddly.
I recently beat FF7 Remake after 45 hrs. of playtime. It was my first foray into a Final Fantasy game and going into it I’ll admit I wasn’ sure what to expect and while I’m used to Kingdom Hearts, for some reason I thought this would have some weirder JRPG elements in it...boy, let me tell you I was wrong and I found the story surprisingly grounded, the characters really likeable, and the core mechanics and materia system a blast.
I know it’s only a tiny portion of the overall story and I know some general plot points yet to come (but who knows with the curveballs they threw), but I can’t wait and I think Part 2 will feel equally as great and fresh as we get to explore the rest of the world.
And that’s Tekken Tag Tournament done, all endings including the alt costume ones such as Panda and Tiger. It’s not quite as good as 3 but it was definitely fun, with a great cast including some personal favourites such as Jun and Lee, who were absent from 3. I’ve got a copy of Tekken 4 now so I’ll probably boot that up at some point and see what improvements have been made! Tekken Bowl is proper good fun as well, reminds me a lot of the Super Monkey Ball minigames.
I beat Trails in the Sky the 3rd there. I’m really sad that the trilogy’s over, I loved my time with them and basically binged them this whole year. I know I‘ll see some of the characters again in other games but it’s still a bittersweet feeling, it was a great ending and I’ll maybe go back and replay them in a couple of years. Onto the Crossbell games now, I have JP copies of both Vita ports so it’s just a question of patching them. This will definitely be interesting.
Just got to the end of the story mode for Star Wars Battlefront 2, lots of cool set pieces to enjoy. Shriv was very funny. Had low expectations going in but enjoyed it. Quite cool how they tied it into so many of the films.
Even if the whole, "ZOMG, I think I'm a baddie! Reckon I should probably switch sides," angle was far too contrived. I think with a bit more effort they could have made that a lot more believable, but it was still fun, despite that.
Beat Star Wars Jedi Knight there. Last time I lost my save on level 13 which was awful but I managed to pull through and properly finish it off. It’s pretty good, relatively outdated but still mostly fun. The only problem is that the lightsaber duels are terrible, there’s 0 way of knowing if your attack actually landed and the bosses murder you in about 3 hits. Can’t believe I beat it, the final boss was hard as nails.
