Topic: Long Shot Question About Space Hulk

Yep, Space Hulk - the relatively poorly received port of a relatively poorly put together adaptation of a (being honest) needlessly difficult tabletop classic!

I've wanted it for ages, and I had some credit left over from a CEX trade so bit the bullet and ordered it.

So now that story time is over - the question!

Has anyone.... ever, played the 'hotseat' multiplayer mode? Not that I'm certain I will - but I know enough people IRL who might be in to it.

If you have - in context of how the game is generally considered - how was it?

@KALofKRYPTON I did and it was pretty fun, unfortunately finding people to play the mode was nigh impossible. I guess the best way to describe the mode was it felt a bit like playing Timesplitters multiplayer, if it were a turn-based strategy game. It was definitely unique, but is very difficult to describe, sorry for not being too helpful.

@ReanSchwarzer7 Cool man. Just wandered if anyone had actually experienced it. I used to play the table top version when I was a kid, and had a couple of games of the release from a couple of years back.
The video game looks pretty faithful. It arrived it the post today, so I'll get in to it later.
Ordered the Ascension version (from the same dev's, essentially the same thing but with a few more video game bells & whistles) for PS4 too since it was cheap on 365.

Well, I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised with Space Hulk.

That's not to say that the criticism levelled at the game isn't all valid; it is a clunky, poorly (not) optimised port. But it certainly captures the tabletop game very well, and despite the shortcomings of the thing - it is a pretty addictive experience. A few missions in and I'm happy I picked it up.

Looking forward to getting my hands on Ascension (ps4) - though I may leave that until I've gone through the original version.

If anyone out there has any interest in Space Hulk or the 40k universe and hasn't picked it up - it is easily worth the sub £10 price for the cartridge (and it's about seven quid on the store at the moment).

@KALofKRYPTON Glad your enjoying it. I noticed Space Hulk on the PS Store at a discounted price a few days ago but ended up buying Plague inc, Raiden V and Yakuza Kiwami instead. I was tempted though.

Also with reviews always bear this in mind. If you are a fan of something; say lone wolf the game books. Its recently been turned into a game and has reviews anywhere between 5 to 8 out of 10. One of the criticisms is you have to read. Thats a genuine critisism in a review about a book being turned into an interactive book with game elements. Baffling really. And as I used to read / play those books I know thats not a fair critique.

@themcnoisy Indeed. Most reviews are useful in some way, in the times of easily accessed video content they are less of a need to gauge how something might play. In Space Hulk, the criticisms are largely levelled at how the game feels - which actually doesn't come across all that well on video. It is a clunky beast - but playable.

Regarding the discount - looks like a few other GW games are cheap too. The first Vermintide is £6.49! Very tempting - but also at the £10 level - I might just buy the disc.

Love Plague Inc. never thought to try the console version.

What did you think of Raiden V? I was thoroughly underwhelmed. After missing out on IV I was hoping it would be a bit of a tour-de-force, but it really is rather limp. Granted, there's a very long way to go to beat Raiden III - but still...

I would be very wary of Space Hulk Ascension on PS4.

Firstly if trophies mean anything to you then just avoid it. Many of them are unlockable and others are very badly glitched. I have emailed the publisher about it a few times but they just ignore me now - I don't believe they have any intention of fixing it.

The game itself is quite enjoyable but you have to suffer through a terrible interface and lot of bugs and things not working as they should. The worst problem is that once you complete any of the campaigns the game just resets back to 0% as if you have achieved nothing. There are also myriad smaller issues such as officers not being able to fire there secondary weapons. Also the occasional hard crash.

Its a shame as there is a decent game underneath but in the current state I wouldnt recommend it at all.

@Milky_Bandit There's no way I'd be looking to complete trophy runs on these. The 'kill 40,000 genestealers' trophies would put pay to that!

From what I've seen of Ascension running, it looks improved over the Vita port of the original, and I can cope with that well enough.

I doubt the publisher will care as the license has passed on now. A new game is on the way called Tactics.

Thanks for the head's up though. I've missed a delivery for it, so have to fetch it at some point. I'll come back and update when I've had a go.

@KALofKRYPTON Sorry for the late reply I had my notifications turned off in my email.

Ive never played any of the previous Raiden games. 5 is good, I prefer Darius cs, Geometry Wars 3, Resogun, Nex Machina tbf but its a nice throwback game.

@themcnoisy no worries.

Of you've access to a PS2 get Raiden III. It was quite expensive for a PAL copy for a while, but the US version is usually cheap as chips.

And Gradius V. I don't think I've played a shmup since that's better - though Resogun and Dariusburst are close.
