Topic: Turning your favourite games to TV or Film

If you could all help me out, I'm doing a bit of research into what gamers think would make a great TV show from games past and present, doesn't necessarily have to be PS games it can be from any time and any era. Would love to get all your thoughts on titles and why it would make a good show.

For instance, they have recently turned Halo into a TV show, I think that the the storyline of Max Payne, especially Max Payne 3, would make a great TV show. Drunkard military man put in charge of VIP's, I think it could be great!

Max Payne will never get another adaptation after the appalling 2008 film, which was quite rightly torn to pieces by critics.

It also seriously worries me that it now looks like they'll be handing Mark Wahlberg, the man who was nominated for the Worst Actor award at the Golden Raspberrys for Max Payne, the lead role in the Uncharted adaptation. Just give it to Fillion already!

Interesting choice of casting, Steve. I agree it was a shamble of a film. What would you like to be seen made into a TV show/film?

Done correctly, I think Mass Effect could be a fantastic TV series, in the same vein as things like Battlestar and Stargate. Outside of that I'm really not so sure, as I quite often feel like a lot of what works well in a game just doesn't translate so well to movies/tv. I'm sure it could be done, but it doesn't help that pretty much every game -> film/tv adaptation I've seen has been pretty poor, which then just sets the negative expectation that they'll all be like that!

To me, the main problem is that games so often have much larger running times than films, meaning that a film struggles to cram all of the plot in at once, thus shortening key points and destroying the atmosphere. But it can also work the other way around, as the length of most games is in their gameplay sections, which engage you well as a player but don't transfer well to a non-interactive form of media, so to turn it into a viable tv series the writers could even end up having to think of ways to draw it out and add to it.

I actually think The Last of Us could have made a damn good TV series, as the pacing of it and constant pseudo-cinematic nature of the game, even in gameplay segments, made it just as much of a joy to watch as it was to play throughout its' entirety. But in a world that already has The Walking Dead, nobody would ever greenlight it as there's already too high a bar set on TV in that genre for most people to see it as being worth trying to go up against that.
