Mind if I do a top 5? 1 is the one I'd want to go to most and 5 is the one I'd want to go to but just not as much as the others.
1)Rito Village (breath of the wild) because it reminds me of touristy seaside towns I used to go to with my family
2)Toad Harbour (Mario Kart 8) for the same reason as Rito Village
3)Onion Kingdom (Overcooked! series) because everything is so colourful and I bet it smells of nice food
4)The golden isles (Fenyx Rising) because seeing all the greek beasts would be amazing
5)The mardi gras level from Crash 4 because it's really purple and purple is my favourite colour

School/School II - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1/2
Mars - Doom 3
Industrial Zone - Doom II

There's a lot more but I'm struggling to remember them now!

See ya!

@Col_McCafferty @egbert Chalk up another fan of Meridian in me, as well.

@ApostateMage When I got around to considering the Mass Effect universe, I settled on the Tempest (which then didn't make the top ten anyway) but it was very nearly the Citadel. I can't wait to wander around it in the remaster. Such a beautiful place; good shout!

@egbert It's a stunning city, would be a wonder of the modern world let alone one built during such a turbulent time n the history of humanity.

Yes, I am currently replaying HZD but had almost forgotten how wonderful it is.

  • Besaid Island (Final Fantasy X) - A gorgeous tropical island, littered with interesting ruins. Excellent music and atmosphere.
  • Narshe (Final Fantasy VI) - Phenomenal starting location that caps off a wonderful opening sequence. A wintry mining town that feels run down and depressed under the might of the empire. Also home to a cave of moogles.
  • Windfall Island (The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker) - Although tiny, this island is quite bustling and has lots of secrets.
  • Hyrule Field (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) - Although modest by modern standards, this blew my mind in 1998 and the impact has not diminished.
  • Traverse Town (Kingdom Hearts) - A place where people gather after losing their worlds to the darkness. It's permanently nighttime, has an excellent atmosphere and is accompanied by one of my favourite pieces of video game music. TT is home to many Final Fantasy and Disney characters alike.
  • Ding Dong Dell (Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch) - Inspired by medieval European towns, this is home to the grimalkin - a race of anthropomorphic cats - and feels cheery and adventurous.
  • Gruntilda's Lair (Banjo-Kazooie) - A labyrinthine hub world from which all the game's levels are accessed. Plus the theme is based on Teddy Bear's Picnic and has a witch cackling in the background.
  • Dunwall (Dishonored) - It was a toss up between Dunwall and City 17 from Half Life 2 (incidentally both had concept art created by the same artist), but Dunwall won out. It's dark, grim and decaying. Based on late 19th century London, Dunwall is in the midst of a deadly rat plague.
  • Zaphias (Tales of Vesperia) - The starting location of the game with an elegant aristocratic quarter juxtaposed against the slums of the working classes on the lower levels.
  • Parnasse (Baten Kaitos) - Most of this game's locations are quite inventive, although this one is literally made of confectionary such as cakes, sweets and lavish icing. The game utilises prerendered environments to great effect, with a lot of detail and atmosphere in each area.

@RogerRoger The Tempest was a stunning ship. So roomy inside compared to the Normandy and the cutscenes of it landing and exiting planets were fantastic. Plus it had a couch!

In no particular order:

  • House in What Remains of Edith Finch — A quirky and foreboding surprise tale around every corner of this avant-garde domicile
  • Police station (Resident Evil 2) — So many epic rooms and a classic creepy locale
  • Forbidden Woods and Hemwick Charne Lane (Bloodborne) — A game chock-full of fantastic locations, these two stick out in my memory the most
  • Tsushima (Ghost of Tsushima) — I think it’s artistically the most lovely setting of any game I’ve played
  • The world of Death Stranding — jaw-dropping lonesomely beautiful world
  • Forbidden Lands (Shadow of the Colossus) — another godforsaken and lonely land of immense beauty
  • Columbia (BioShock Infinite) — unique take on a dystopian setting in the clouds
  • Fabletown (The Wolf Among Us) — I really hope we get another chance to spend time in this freakish and convoluted town filled with characters and set pieces from fairly tale and folklore.
  • Nepal (Uncharted 2) — for some reason this area is seared in my nostalgic gaming memories
  • Arkham Asylum (Batman Arkham Asylum) — a perfect blend of equal parts chilling and enticing to explore

@Th3solution By your own admission, there's a heck of a lot of "creepy" and "lonely" and "godforsaken" and "freakish" and "dystopian" in your choices! I take it these are all places you'd like to temporarily visit, and not take up permanent residence in?

@velio84 Good shout with Killzone: Shadow Fall there, I'd forgotten about its environments!

@RogerRoger 😂 Yeah, I noticed after I put my list together that there was a heavy dose of the dark, dreary, and depressing in my choices. I actually took a quick self-analysis before I posted that and tried to understand why I gravitated to that end of the spectrum when I usually consider myself more of a gamer who dislikes the macabre and the corrupt in my games. I think it must all be a cover because it looks like those are some of my favorite settings! 😅

But yes, for the record, I don’t think I’d set up residence in any of my list of locales, outside of maybe Tsushima. And I really think I could do something with the Edith Finch home — all it needs is a little feng shui.

@Th3solution Well, games tend to be more appealing as anti-reality escapism, so at least your list would seem to suggest that you're not living in a nightmarish, decaying ruin of the damned... but hey, we like what we like, right? Like you, I prefer upbeat and hopeful entertainment, but there's no denying the effectiveness of a well-crafted environment (and I do love Arkham Asylum)!

And that'd make a great back-of-the-box review quote! What Remains of Edith Finch - "All it needs is a little feng shui. 9/10." - Th3solution, 2021.

@RogerRoger 😂 I’m sure the game would have sold better with that endorsement!
